Ha! Got ya with that headline! Read on... Back in September 2007, I wrote about our foray into the world of real estate investment. Hubby and I purchased a condo in Collingwood, Ontario that we rented to a fantastic family and, we are still very happy with our decision. There's more though. Many people who own secondary properties in vacation country like to rent them out from time to time to cover overhead costs associated with owning such a property. That may get a little more difficult soon. The Town of the Blue Mountains has been discussing the issue of short term rentals for some time now and earlier this year, they enacted an interim control by-law to allow some time for the study of this matter. Someone I know was fined $5,000 last year for failing to ensure that there were working smoke detectors in a rental unit that he owned. At the time the tenants first occupied his unit, the smoke detectors were working and he never knew otherwise. Later, during a random door to door check by the local fire department, it was discovered that the smoke detectors were no longer working and bam, a $5,000 fine was levied against the owner even though it was the tenants who had disabled the alarms.
