social media: Why Google Plus? It's Better Overall For Business Than Facebook - 10/18/12 12:42 AM
When Google Plus was introduced just a few short months ago, it was initially greeted with eyerolls and "here we go again" from many business professionals.
"I don't have time for it."
"I have more social media platforms than I can keep up with already!"
These are some of the typical initial reactions, but Google added something very compelling and valuable to the mix.  It all started when the proposed merger of Google and Facebook fizzled last year.  Google had already failed twice (remember Google Wave and Google Buzz?) in their attempts at a valid social media platform, and the truth … (12 comments)

social media: Social Media Consultants - Necessary Deprogramming - 10/01/11 07:27 AM
While I'm admittedly biased, because I am an Internet marketing consultant as well as a real estate coach, I just couldn't believe what I was reading when I saw this article today.  It's from nearly a year ago and it just made my blood boil.  It’s in The Telegraph and it’s by someone named Milo Yiannopoulos who proudly shows that he just doesn’t get it.
While there are some insightful arguments made, I could not believe the rash and juvenile expressions (he calls social media consultants “blood sucking hucksters” among other colourful adjectives) this supposed professional used in burning the concept of social media … (0 comments)

social media: Do You Really NEED Google Plus For Your Business? Yes, But Probably Not For Reason You Think - 09/26/11 07:27 AM
I recently posted this as my status on Facebook: "Dear Facebook: You are to social media what Google is to search engines. Google has tried twice (and failed) to cut into your social media market share with Buzz and Wave. Now it's Google Plus. Google Plus is not a superior service, but with all your unnecessary, fear-based and aggravating changes in recent months you just might make Google Plus superior on your own. Stop panicking, for crying out loud and leave a good thing be for a while."
Yes, Facebook has made quite a few changes over the past months...many of … (4 comments)

(This is a re-post for groups I couldn't include in the first post)
In your own SEO, Internet marketing and social media marketing efforts, it’s common to want to avoid the trial and error process that leads to real progress.   Much of the SEO and Internet marketing solutions offered online pander to this human tendency to want the reward without all the work.   If you ever feel yourself falling into that trap, there’s a great lesson to be learned from Google…and its failures.

social media: Social Media Is All About Your Approach - 04/24/11 11:38 PM
(Note: this is a repost for the groups I couldn't include on the first post)
In watching the new documentary on the band Rush ("Beyond the Lighted Stage"), I was particularly fascinated by the interview with drummer Neil Peart and legendary jazz drummer Freddie Gruber.    Peart, widely respected as one of the all-time great rock drummers, had studied with Gruber and when asked about his first lesson he said they didn't play drums...they talked about rhythm and motion and exchanged stories.
Then Gruber said the whole time during the lesson "We were behind the set of drums the whole time...because … (2 comments)

social media: For iPhone Users: You're Being Tracked - 04/21/11 01:18 AM

(Note: this is a repost for the groups I couldn't include on the first post.)
I just read an article this morning about how it has been revealed that iPhones track the owner's location and stores data about their whereabouts without their knowledge.
Surprise, surprise.
Color me jaded, but ever since the advent of the GPS and the various related apps available, I've been waiting for this.  There are so many devices and applications where we're compromising personal information that I'm actually surprised it's taken this long to be revealed. It's easy information just begging to be archived...which, apparently, is … (1 comments)

social media: Helping or Hurting? What Your Internal Dialogue Does For Your Business - 03/30/11 07:47 AM
I had a conversation some months back with a real estate agent in Ohio (Geri Waterman) about internal dialogue and her prospecting/marketing efforts.   She had just completed a door-knocking crusade of a neighborhood of 350 homes and was proud – and rightly so – that she had made a multitude of new long-term contacts as well as securing 4 future listings.
She was initially uneasy about knocking on doors for the same reason most people are.  Rejection.  She didn’t want to be “that” person.  You know the one.  I told her it’s easy to not be “that” person…just be yourself.  ”That” … (7 comments)

social media: Are You Prepared For Consumers' Questions? - 02/23/11 06:32 AM
Consumers are asking questions now more than ever before. More than ever, consumers want to know exactly what services a you provide to earn their money/your commission. This simple concept is at the core of social media marketing.
Try not to take it personally, though it can be admittedly hard. Keep in mind that they simply don’t know. In fact many of your contemporaries can’t describe the breadth of what they do in specific terms. Then there are others who can present a 26-point marketing plan at the drop of a hat.
This video addresses what’s really driving consumers’ more-probing-than-ever questions, … (1 comments)

social media: Don't Understand The Importance of Social Media? See Dan Snyder - 02/04/11 05:33 AM

I'm not even a Washington Redskins fan, but when I read about Skins owner Dan Snyder demanding the firing of the writer of an article in the Washington Post called "The Cranky Redskins Fan's Guide to Dan Snyder" I just HAD to take a look.
I'm a football nut...just love a good football game.  My favorite sports radio/tv personality is ESPN radio's Colin Cowherd, who is so good at cutting to the core of the truth of a situation that it's almost painful sometimes.  This scenario with Snyder reminds me of my two favorite Cowherd quotes:
"Arrogant people just don't … (5 comments)

social media: Fear - The Main Roadblock in Social Media Marketing - 01/20/11 06:34 AM

3 and a half years ago I taught that if you strip away all the hype and technological jargon, technology is simply bringing business back (ironically?) to the humanity of what business is supposed to be in the first place...people helping people.
I still teach that to this day, because with each new technological advance communication is becoming both more immediate and more personal.  This can be good or bad depending on your personality type and how you handle yourself.
Regardless of what anyone tells you, never forget that social media is what you make it.  You have complete control.

social media: Look Before You Link (Do You Really Understand WHY Your Links Are Important?) - 11/16/10 09:33 AM
With all of the social media forums available to us, it's terribly easy to get overwhelmed and feel trapped in a maze of (virtually) your own creation. Last week I touched on the importance of connecting your social media so they work together in harmony.
The other part of using social media properly is making sure, as with all of your traditional and modern marketing, that your social media is linked to your website and vice versa. All of your marketing should be making it as easy as possible for people to 1) go to your website or 2) contact you … (3 comments)

social media: Social Media Marketing Is A Waste Of Time - 11/09/10 07:10 AM

Many real estate pros that I talk to in the course of a week are reluctant social media users.  This reluctance winds up as a self-fulfilling prophecy:  By not putting proper effort into social media, results are poor or nonexistent, which reinforces the belief that social media marketing is a waste of time.
Here are a few pointers to keep in mind with regard to social media:
1.  Don't allow yourself to become overwhelmed.  You don't need everything.  One social media forum that you're actually using is better … (6 comments)
