waldo blog: Waldo Welcomes Strip's Chicken! - 10/01/20 11:05 AM
You’ve probably heard that many of us are craving good old comfort food these days, as we change our patterns and habits due to the pandemic.  Little things you can look forward to—like trying a new eatery—can lift your spirits and provide a happy diversion to your day.  And especially as the cooler weather sets in, indulging in comfort food is a treat for yourself!

Make plans to stop in and try Strip’s Chicken, a food truck parked at the southwest corner of 85th and Wornall, next to the Price Chopper. Owner Todd Johnson opened the original location of Strip’s four years ago … (1 comments)

waldo blog: New Local Business in Waldo: Soap Refill Station - 03/01/20 11:56 AM
There are already so many local small business owners in Waldo that I feature on this blog…and here’s another one:  Soap Refill Station, at 7441 Broadway, a few steps south of Waldo Pizza.  Soap Refill Station just opened late last month.

The concept for this business is simple and timely:  bring your own container to the shop and refill with one of their natural soaps and cleaners.  The motto is “If you clean it, we have something eco-friendly to clean it with”.  Anne Dezort, who owns the shop with her boyfriend Adam McKay, explained that many other countries have a similar type … (3 comments)

waldo blog: Major Changes Planned for 75th and Wornall Intersection in Waldo - 02/04/19 09:13 AM
As I reported last month, Waldo home prices are on the rise. And the planned Wornall Road Improvement Project will enhance the streetscape, beauty and walkability of Waldo even more, making the area even more appealing to homebuyers.
Last week I stopped by the Open House Public Meeting (at Hale Cook Elementary) to get more details on the project. Paid for with your tax dollars, this project focuses on Wornall Road from 74th to 79th St. Key improvements will be made at the heavily traveled and congested intersection of 75th and Wornall.  They include:
*enhanced “artistic” crosswalks
*new curbs and sidewalks with accent pavers
*new streetlights and traffic … (2 comments)

waldo blog: 2018: A Very Good Year for Brookside and Waldo! - 12/31/18 12:58 PM
Welcome to 2019!  I hope you are having a relaxing and healthy holiday season. Since this is the first blog of the year, I'm going to recap some 2018 highlights for the Brookside/Waldo area.  It was a successful twelve months for our neighborhood!

Many new businesses opened, and most of them are locally owned and operated. In the heart of Brookside along 63rd St, Sweet and Simple is a new edible cookie dough treat shop,  and LadyBye offers reasonably priced women’s  clothes and accessories for those interested in classic style.  Brookside Barrio and Brookside Poultry Company are two new popular eateries.    Brookside East … (3 comments)

waldo blog: Renovation Plans Scheduled for 85th and Wornall Strip Mall - 03/02/18 03:14 PM
Today’s blog will tell you about the planned renovation changes for the southwest corner of 85th and Wornall in Waldo—where the Price Chopper is located.  This shopping area (“Wornall Village Shopping Center”) has been looking a bit shabby and run down over the years, and I’m excited share the news about the renovation!

The Tutera Group, along with Nolte and Associates are planning to refresh this area and hope to make it more pedestrian friendly.  The biggest change sounds like it will be the remodeled Price Chopper store—a total inside renovation plus moving the delivery area to the northwest corner of the … (1 comments)

waldo blog: Wornall Road Construction in Waldo - 11/08/17 11:06 AM

Brookside/Waldo neighbors, you have noticed the road construction along Wornall...four lanes are now down to two lanes, one each for north and south traffic.

Personally I avoid using Wornall between Gregory and 85th Street--it is usually very congested with heavy traffic, and the roadwork makes it worse.

I called Kansas City MO and found out that the gas lines are being replaced in this area, roughly between 79th St and 83rd Terrace.  The work will be going on for at least the  next thirty days.

So..if you must travel along this part of Wornall Road, please be prepared for delays and workers in the … (0 comments)

waldo blog: New Shop in Waldo: Hawthorne and Ivy - 07/15/17 05:47 PM

There's a new boutique shop in Waldo--tucked away in a former gas station  from the 1920s!  Hawthorne and Ivy opened a couple of weeks ago at 7142 Wornall, just south of Betty Rae's and next to Michael Avery's hair salon.

You may be familiar with Hawthorne and Ivy's shop in Weston.  This is shop #3 for owner Elinor Hagan Lowe.  She started out designing custom 'mother's bracelets' , following in her mother's footsteps.  Elinor runs Paco Designs in Lenexa, then came the Weston store, and now the Waldo spot.

Step inside and you will find all the items attractively displayed on the walls … (1 comments)

I was trying to think of full service, big menu breakfast spots in Waldo....came up with Classic Cookie at 75th and Wornall and Game Day at 8950 Wornall. Now there is another place, Neighborhood Cafe, at 7531 Wornall next to Lew's . It opened at the end of August and is already drawing breakfast crowds on the weekends.
Neighborhood Cafe is more than just breakfast...they offer a large menu featuring 'home style' cooking: meatloaf, liver and onions, burgers, open faced sandwiches, hoagies, 'skillets' and on Sundays: all you can eat fried chicken. All of the baking is from scratch (biscuits, pies, cornbread) … (0 comments)

Another business has opened in Brookside East..this one focused on the children growing up in our neighborhood. Fox Sports & Activity Center has this goal: to engage and enhance kids' minds, bodies and spirit through holistic training.

Owner Caroline Fox explains that holistic training is 'the whole self' - meaning her classes and camps focus on not just skill training, but also nutrition, health and wellness. Here, it's not about 'winning', but about developing the skills needed for the game and building self esteem. She and her staff offer sports focused classes for kids up to age 11, teaching soccer, lacrosse, badminton, … (1 comments)

Finally, Waldo and Brookside has its own blow dry bar!  The Flatiron District Blow Dry Bar opened in a few months ago at 7108 Wornall. Never heard of a blow dry bar?  They are different from a traditional hair salon..read on for details!

Blow dry bars are very popular on the east and west coasts. It's a throwback to the traditional  'beauty shop' in the 1950s and 60s when women would come in once a week, get their hair 'done',  chat with friends and neighbors and pamper themselves for an hour or so.  The Flatiron Blow Dry Bar has the same goal, but with … (2 comments)

waldo blog: Enjoy Live Entertainment in September at The Well in Waldo - 09/08/15 01:26 AM
A quick blog today my friends as my regular job is keeping me pretty busy! I wanted to mention some changes at The Well for September 2015. The Well Bar, Grill and Rooftop, located at 7421 Broadway,  has been a fantastic addition to the Waldo/Brookside area since it opened in 2009. The food is tasty, service is attentive, and of course, the rooftop patio is the place to hang out for a good time with friends. I often take clients there for lunch when we are out looking at homes.

Besides the friendly, open atmosphere, The Well is now offering free live … (0 comments)
