marysellslv: Sunrise - Sunset - 07/09/08 04:14 AM
Remember the song 'Sunrise - Sunset' from the movie "Fiddler on the Roof"?   Born out of the early 70's (1971), before that it opened on Broadway in 1964, it was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and several Acadamy Awards.
The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each daughter's choice of husband moves progressively further away from established customs—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from … (3 comments)

marysellslv: Fourth of July 2008 Ramblings - 07/05/08 02:59 AM
My husband in his usual patriotic way dressed in the royal red, white and blue that he has dressed in every Independence Day since the 1970s.  The material the pants are made out of is the old polyester double knit, which like the energizer bunny just keeps going and going and going. Our kids love to tell the stories of 4th of July parties, or 4th of July church functions, or working in fire works stands and their dad wore this outfit and it is one of their earliest memories (maybe he wore it the day they were born!)
Not only is … (9 comments)

marysellslv: NV, Las Vegas: Senator Reid's Thoughts on the Housing Crisis in Nevada - 06/30/08 05:42 PM
I regularly contact my state senators in regards to issues brought forward on different subjects that might affect real estate, loans for real estate, and housing prices.  I recently received the below reply to one of my e-mails from NV Senator and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D).  I posted it here as I thought in an election year this might be of interest to some.  I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on it.  When I hear back from NV Senator John Ensign (R) I will post his reply also.
I encourage everyone to take a proactive approach … (4 comments)

Angel Point is a charming little condo complex on the north west side of Las Vegas....centrally located to everything it's a quick 'shot' down the I-95 to downtown Las Vegas and the Strip.  If one wants to stay away from the Las Vegas Strip...that's easy to do as golf courses abound, the Boca Park Shopping Center is just around the corner offering stores like the Pottery Barn, William Sonoma, Joseph Banks;  Great eating close by....like P.F. Changs, The Melting Pot, and Cheesecake Factory just to name a few!; The Suncoast and Rampart casinos are nearby with lots of opportunity to eat, gamble, relax with a massage, … (2 comments)

marysellslv: Nevada and Real Property Transfer Tax - 06/14/08 01:42 AM
The Real Property Transfer Tax is a tax collected when a home is sold in the state of Nevada. The County Recorder collects it at the time of recording and is part of the seller's closing costs. In Clark County NV (Las Vegas, Henderson, etc) the rate is $5.10 per $1000 of value.  This is approximately 1/2 % of the sale price of a home.  If a typical home sells for $250,000 the transfer tax would then be $1300.  This cost is typically a seller cost but can be negotiated. The basis for the tax is the actual selling price or … (2 comments)

marysellslv: Las Vegas Market Stats - 06/12/08 06:35 AM
According to Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors (GLVAR) stats, southern Nevada has seen four straight months of increaced home sales.  A slight decrease in the median price of house, condos and townhouses, was also seen.  The decrease is attributed to bank-owned properties and short sales.  More than half the homes sold in southern Nevada are bank owned or short sale properties.  The likelihood of it being a better buyer's market in the future is slim to none.  If you are thinking of purchasing a home or investing in some property now is the time!

marysellslv: Five Easy Ways to Improve Brain Power - 06/11/08 05:58 PM
The other day when we were visiting our kids in Arizona I turned on Good Morning America (GMA)....now I very seldom watch daytime TV....but when I was a stay-at-home mom a gazillion years ago this was one show I did watch (remember Joan Lunden and David Hartman?).  So I figured being on vacation I deserved a treat and turned it on.  The subject that was being discussed was how to help improve our brain power.  They made it quite clear this was not a 'cure all' but it could help delay the onset of Alzheimers.  My brain has turned to total … (14 comments)

marysellslv: A Laugh for Today - 06/10/08 02:20 PM
I think most of us can appreciate this!  You may be too young to remember this 'dynamic duo' but you can certainly laugh at (with) them still today.

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old to REALLY understand computers, to truly appreciate this though.  For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on...

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch, "Who's on First?" might have turned out something like this:

marysellslv: Benihana's in Las Vegas Nevada - 06/08/08 03:53 AM
A few weeks ago we went to Benihana's with several friends for dinner.  Benihana's is a restaurant with Japanese food as their 'claim to fame'....my husband would never go before because he 'does not like sushi' even though he has never tried it.  But he wasn't about to turn down an evening out with great friends and besides someone else was picking up the tab!  What a hoot we had!  No sushi either!  Howard had steak and salmon, I had filet mignon and scallops.  Everyone ordered something different and we all tasted each others.    Benihana's in Las Vegas is located in the Hilton  … (3 comments)

marysellslv: Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...................POOP! - 06/06/08 05:16 PM
A week ago we took off from Vegas for a ten-day vacation to visit our kids in Arizona.  Going from Vegas to Arizona is kinda like jumping from the frying pan (Las Vegas) into the fire (Arizona).  Our son lives in Yuma, AZ (which is on the border of Mexico/California/Arizona for those who are unfamiliar with it).  Our daughter and son-in-law live 180 miles from Yuma in Phoenix.  We split out time between the two.
Anyway, we take off for the 300 +/- mile trip to Yuma....as we come out of Needles, California we turn onto a 96 mile 2 lane … (5 comments)

marysellslv: National Donut (Doughnut) Day - 06/06/08 05:27 AM

Today, June 6, is National Donut Day - Have YOU had your donut yet?  As a chid a donut was always spelled doughnut - I think (but am not sure) that the speling of doughnut is the Queen's English version of the spelling.
According to Wikipedia, a doughnut, or donut, is a sweet, deep-fried piece of dough or batter. The two most common types are the torus-shaped ring doughnut and the filled doughnut, a flattened sphere injected with jam, jelly, cream, custard, or another sweet filling. A small spherical piece of dough, originally made from the middle of a … (12 comments)

marysellslv: Zion National Park - 05/29/08 04:03 PM

A couple weeks ago my husband and I had the pleasure of going on a couple's retreat, with 35 other couples from our church, to Zion National Park.  It's hard to believe that this beautiful area is just a 2 hour drive from Las Vegas...we stayed in a 'lodge' outside the park and then took the free bus tour through the park.  There is camping in the park but many areas are inaccessible by vehicle (except on the bus).  The day (and nights) were awesome with the highs near 80 and the lows in the 60s.  We saw many mountain … (10 comments)

marysellslv: English Language - 05/12/08 04:17 PM
On June 6, 2007 the United States Senate voted to make English the official language of the United States, with a vote of 64-33.  The bill also states that no person has a right to have the government act in another tongue unless specifically stated by law.  In an unprecedient follow-up on this bill Europe has decided to follow suit (sort of)!  Read below to hear all about it:
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, … (17 comments)

marysellslv: Prescription Prices Like Everything Else Can Be Out Of Sight! - 05/11/08 04:10 PM
If you have had to purchase prescriptions lately you know how expensive they can be!  Prescriptions, like everything else, have gone up in price.  Until recently we were able to order our prescriptions via mail order at reduced prices.  But that for us has stopped...I recently learn about WAL*MART is offering a "$4 Prescription Program" with no insurance required.  After doing some research I found out that between my husband and myself we have eight prescriptions....at the mail-order average of $25 each it was costing a hefty amount each month. WAL*MART offers four of these eight prescriptions on their "$4 Prescription … (5 comments)

marysellslv: NV, Las Vegas: Stagnant Pools and Mosquitoes - 05/07/08 04:44 PM
One of the largest problems with foreclosed home in Las Vegas is those with pools that are left to stagnate.  It is not only an aesthetic problem but there is also issues with mosquito breading. Mosquito's can carry the West Nile Virus and can be very dangerous to your health.   If you have a neighbor who has either abandoned their home or have been foreclosed on and there is a pool involved please call the Vector Control Office. The Southern Nevada Health District's Vector Control office has a mosquito control hotline (759-1633) or on-line mosquito complaint form: www.SouthernNevadaHealthDistrict.org. For all your … (4 comments)
