serendipity: COTTAGE ON DOUBLE LOT IN CLOSE-IN TIMBERLAKE - 703 MARBORO DR - 01/16/15 04:44 AM

The cozy ranch at 703 Marboro is charming, fresh and well-maintained, with beautiful hardwood floors in all main level rooms and lots of light.   The location is close-in, very convenient - between Bristol Highway and North Roan.   Main level has three bedrooms and two tiled baths, both updated and attractive.

The  living room has a stone fireplace and wall of light that includes access to a generous multi-level deck and a large private, lot fenced with classic vinyl picket fence.  To left of the foyer is a dining room with a generous window and arch  opening to the  table-space kitchen  - not … (2 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITY - Old clients/friends have what new client needs. - 02/14/14 06:36 AM
My clients needed a ranch with an unusually large master, first-floor laundry, and good space for her sewing room and his office.   There were only three choices in the right area and price range, so I turned to expired or withdrawn listings and properties that had sold a few years ago that met the criteria.
That search yielded some good potential listings if the owners still want to move and my clients don’t choose theirs.   That’s not unusual.   I just need time to follow up.  The results of that may be Serendipity #3.

serendipity: A LETTER FROM SANTA which you may want to use - a serendipity - 12/22/13 06:33 AM
A LETTER FROM SANTA - A serendipity story and something you may want to use
On the chance that you know a child who is about to “outgrow Santa”, I want to share a sweet letter that the children and then the grandchildren of a friend of mine received from Santa as they were growing up.   When I first shared it with others, I got an unexpected serendipity – well, serendipities are always unexpected, and I’m delighted they keep happening.
My friend, Betty Hamilton, gave me permission to share her letter “from Santa”   Someone with whom I shared it asked me if … (2 comments)

serendipity: Persistence may or may not pay - a serendipity story - 12/08/13 11:02 AM
A serendipity that hasn't happened yet - and one from long ago.  The sign was down and the buyers still wanted to see the house which had been "For Sale by Owner" a few days before.  The seller had responded today to my call with a cordial explanation of why the house couldn’t be shown until after the first of the year, but my buyers were ready to make a decision, loved that neighborhood, the outside of the house and the information I’d given them from MLS about when these folks bought it a few years ago .
As we drove by … (2 comments)

serendipity: STUART ROTHENBERG, POLITICAL ANALYST - PART OF A SERENDIPITY STORY - 11/01/13 10:21 PM
STUART ROTHENBERG, POLITICAL ANALYST, WAS PART OF A SERENDIPITY STORY
When my husband sees Stuart Rothenberg, political analyst, on TV, Mike says, “There’s your guy.”  To be sure I hadn’t exaggerated the story of the transaction that involved them, I wrote the Rothenbergs to ask how they remembered it.

(I don’t want to have unconsciously changed a story to make it better and I don’t want  to shape their memories, so I don’t ask people to confirm what I remember.  Instead, I ask, “How to you remember …?”)

Here is Mrs. Rothenberg’s response to my question.

serendipity: SERENDIPITY - LONE OAK HISTORIC PROPERTY AND PREVIOUS OWNER - 02/17/13 07:26 AM
I keep finding unexpected connections.    Ellen H. came to the open house of my listing on Forest Avenue recently, scouting for young friends.   We had a pleasant talk and she left with my card with the calendar on the back.

When I called her to tell her that the property had sold that day, with two buyers bidding the price up beyond the asking price, I asked her how I could help her young friends.

She told me  that one of the couples had just found a place on Lone Oak Road, on the other side of town.    “I … (2 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITIES - CHRISTMAS IN THE AIRPORT - MAKING PEOPLE SMILE - 12/21/12 10:25 PM
Dear Active Rain Friends,
I've been working on a growing collection of serendipities for my children, who are beginning to arrive for the weekend from Maryland and Virginia.   Some are posted in the Serendipity group.   Far more are in a thick folder - copies of emails that remind me ot them, letters and emails to people who were involved to help me be sure I'm remembering accurately, hand-written notes, various documents, etc. - not chronological and not organized, but stories I think are worth telling.   I'm trying to get them all into one document, then I'll sort them, edit - I don't know … (1 comments)

serendipity: Active Rain and Google - Fantastic Partners - 04/19/12 02:49 PM

ACTIVE RAIN AND GOOGLE ARE FANTASTIC PARTNERS.   Almost everything I blog about goes to Google, which is
·         great for listings,
·         fun for people I mention, and
·         useful for organizations, events and businesses that need publicity.

HERE’S A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW ACTIVE RAIN AND GOOGLE GO TOGETHER.

I had a call tonight from an old friend that led me to do another serendipity blog – about the friend he was going to refer to me, whom we discovered I’d already met at an open house many years ago  in Maryland and … (20 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITY - NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE- BARRY BISHOP - 04/19/12 12:47 PM

The serendipity that led to my listing the home of explorer Barry Bishop is one of the memories that survives the years and gives me pleasure still.   I especially enjoy working with buyers and sellers who come to me because someone else who trusts me sends them to me.    Friends, neighbors and clients (overlapping groups very often, which I appreciate)  take note and tell your friends!

An agent friend in Virginia asked  me to go talk to his friends about selling a house in Bethesda.    All I knew was their name and address.  They were a very interesting couple - … (0 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITY STRIKES AGAIN - ACCIDENTAL BUYER, FSBO & REFERRAL - 03/05/12 09:17 PM
A buyer called, thinking I was someone else she’d talked to previously about Waterbrooke, Hunters Lake, Villas at Browns Mill.   She said we'd talked about those and others, about their need for at least three bedrooms.   I thought I couldn’t possibly have forgotten, but she insisted we’d talked.  She said she even remembered that I’d said I was a widow.

Back up.   I’m happily married.  We still don’t know who that other first agent was, but since Sue had never got the information, she and I had a pleasant phone conversation this afternoon.

I understand they’re … (7 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITY - RE-CONNECTING AFTER YEARS - AGENCY ISSUE AVOIDED - 03/05/12 08:17 PM
Re-connecting even after years is worth the effort.   I called Marcie last week to be sure I was remembering accurately a serendipity that involved her.  And to be sure she remembered as I did "who represented whom."

“We still love the house.”  “You should see what we’ve done with it.”   “The deep voice when you called wasn’t Bill’s.  That’s the kid who was a baby when we bought it.”   It’s always neat to connect with people we’ve not talked to in too long.

Marcie and Bill had been looking for a house in Silver Spring MD with … (1 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITY – SPECIAL BOOKS, SPECIAL PERSON, SPECIAL MEETING - 02/24/12 12:47 AM
Browsing in various used bookstores in the Johnson City TN area, I have found a number of  Daily Guideposts  in which there is an entry for every single day of every month for the whole year – a note or a brief prayer.
The editors had given the blank spaces various captious through the years- “Blessings,”  “Thank you to God,” “Everyday Wonders,” etc.    Over a span of years,  from 1983 to 1995, apparently this person never missed a day.   Amazing, I thought.  There was a name in some of them, but the handwriting and the faithfulness of the notes made … (0 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITY - REUNION LINKS NACOGDOCHES TX TO JOHNSON CITY TN - 01/13/12 12:27 PM
A high school reunion provided a coincidental link between my old home town and my new one.
In Nacogdoches, Texas,  for the 50th Nacogdoches High School reunion, I had a few minutes to spare and drove by the house on Pine Street in which my parents had lived a long time ago.  The huge magnolias had been cut down, so the house looked very different, but it was a place from my past and I was feeling sentimental, so I parked in front of the house briefly.   As I sat remembering, a man drove up the driveway and went into the house.

serendipity: SERENDIPITY - MAKING PEOPLE SMILE - 01/06/12 05:50 AM
Someone today mentioned their pleasure in smiling at strangers to try to make them smile, and I told them about the “game” I play – trying to win a smile from someone who looks really grumpy.

That made me think of a time I almost didn’t succeed.   A big crowd of tired, frustrated people lined the corridors of an airport near Christmas time – flights delayed, schedules messed up, children fussy.   Everyone fussy.   No one smiled.   I finally caught the eye of a young woman  across the corridor and down a way, and we both smiled.
She … (11 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITY - FIREWORKS ON MY HILL - 01/06/12 05:39 AM
Total strangers often have surprising connections to us if we're open to them.  They've happened so often to me that I'm not just open - I expect them and am delighted when they happen.
Several years ago, a buyer found me on the internet and called from California, about to take a job in Kingsport and not sure whether they'd want to live in Johnson City or Kingsport.    In the course of getting acquainted, I discovered that he had grown up not just in Johnson City, but in Towne Acres, which is the "generic" name for several small subdivisions that are near … (0 comments)

serendipity: SERENDIPITIES - Another one may be happening today - 01/06/12 05:28 AM
I may be on the track of another serendipity now.   Just because there’s so much information available on the internet, I sometimes play detective to see what I can find out about someone I’m about to met to  list their house, help them get one, etc.
The listing that expired was a house I’d shown several months ago  – one of the rare times a seller was home,  and before he left  he’d told me about the fascinating hobby that provided the unusual décor of his house.     Google told me quickly that he was a doctor (my husband had taught … (3 comments)
