News letter to the South Maui Swiming Team

To my favorite Team, First of all, on behalf of the South Maui Sharks community I would like to thank our previous president Darlyn for all the time, help, love and support she gave to our team for the last four years. She had to step back from her position as It is now a time for her to take care of her health... I would like to ask each one of you to put her and her family in your thoughts and prayers for a quick and perfect healing for them to go through this challenge with ease and grace. Darlyn, know that you do have our prayers, love, and support! Brandy, our treasurer had to leave us as she moved with her family and beautiful daughter ..... We wish you success and I know we will keep on seeing you at the meet. I know how big your commitment was to the team and how much you believe that each one of us can make a difference by stepping up to the plate. You have been an inspiration to me. Thank you. I have been your new president since the start of the season and I would like to take the opportunity to introduce my self to you.I was born and raised in France (Normandy). I am Tahitian from my paternal side and French from my mother's side. Eliot and I have been living in the US for almost a decade now.I can't tell you how greatful I am for being able to live here on beautiful Maui... It is a treat from Heaven to us! I wanted to tell our swimmers how much I care and how proud I am to be the witness and supporter of their hard work.I have been watching you guys swimming for over a year now and I am just amazed to see your work and progress. It takes commitment, discipline, courage and passion. You are at the sun rise of your life and I believe this discipline is giving you the tools that you are going to use for the rest of your life. "Focusing on pushing your limit in a choosen field and a commitment to that excellence with things that represent this and miracle "Your life will be the way you want it to be and to me it is awesome to get that at such an early age. It is Janet's gift to you. She practices that with you every time you train. She is and amazing coach and has the experience, love and patience to lead you to your goal. I can't tell you enough about her. We even have some of our team members driving from up country to be mentored by Janet. I will let you make your own opinion by experiencing it yourself - it is always the best way. My goal is to make sure you and your coach Janet have the support that you deserve to achieve your goals. I am very aware now that I have a strong parent's team behind us. They have been showing their love last month at putting an awesome fund raiser. Thank you to Julie on coordinating the event. Result of the amount collected will be published in the next news letter. We are having a new board and coordinator taking place right now, the new position will be announced in the next issue. Please don't be shy to share your thoughts, stories and experience through the News letter, it is a wonderful way to learn and to get to know each other. "it takes a village to raise a child but it takes a child to raise a village" African proverb

Maui vacation rental

VACATION RENTAL (10-12-07) ~COUNTY HEARINGS ON VACATION RENTALS BEGIN...Maui County began the hearing process for a series of five bills for ordinances that would set new rules forVacation Rentals in Maui County. The bills distinguish between Transient Vacation Rentals (TVRs) and Bed &Breakfast (B&B) establishments by describing TVRs as those residential properties rented out short-term,where the owner is not present. B&Bs are described as short-term rentals in which the owner is an occupant, living in the same residence as the guest rooms. Ohana units could not be rented short-term. TVRs wouldonly be allowed in defined resort districts and mini-hotels of up to 20 rooms would be permitted in BusinessDistricts. TVRs would not be permitted in residential, rural, or agricultural districts. B&B would be allowed intothose districts, but in the agricultural district, the owner must also have $35,000 in gross agricultural income tobe allowed to apply for a permit. In Maui County, the Planning Commissions from each of the three islands (Maui, Lanai, and Molokai) first hearthe bills and then make recommendations on amendments to the zoning code to the County Council, whichhas the final say. On October 9, the Maui Planning Commission heard about four hours of testimony. Almostall speakers, including RAM, supported the continuation of the vacation rental industry and opposed theproposed bills because they seemed to be written to undermine the industry and the economy that has grownup around it. Despite an honest effort, the Maui Commission was not able to complete its review of the bills. The commission split on the question of whether or not to allow the use of ohana units as short-term rentals. It agreed, however, to reject a Planning Department proposal to disallow conditional permits for TVRs. TheMaui Planning Commission is scheduled to take up the matter again on October 23.In other vacation rental matters, the Hawaii Association of REALTORS® agreed to match RAM's initial $12,500contribution to an action plan aimed at bringing a positive solution to this issue, creating a combined fund of$25,000. HAR also supported RAM's request that the National Association of REALTORS® match that $25,000with national Issues Mobilization funding, to create a $50,000 fund to address this issue. Initial planning forthose funds is to underwrite an economic impact statement on the forced shutdown of this industry; to conducta public opinion poll on the subject; and to conduct a media-based education campaign about the issue

Hawaii facts and trivia

Hawaii is the most isolated population center on the face of the earth. Hawaii is 2390 miles from California; 3850 miles from Japan; 4900 miles from China Hawaii Facts and TriviaThe state of Hawaii consists of eight main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii. Hawaii is the most isolated population center on the face of the earth. Hawaii is 2,390 miles from California; 3,850 miles from Japan; 4,900 miles from China; and 5,280 miles from the Philippines. Hawaii is the only state that grows coffee. More than one-third of the world's commercial supply of pineapples comes from Hawaii. There are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. Vowels: A, E, I, O, U Consonants: H, K, L, M, N, P, W From east to west Hawaii is the widest state in the United States. The Hawaiian Islands are the projecting tops of the biggest mountain range in the world. Honolulu's zenith star, (the star that rises directly above it) is Arcturus. The Hawaiians called it Hokule'a. (Hoe koo lay uh.) Under-sea volcanoes that erupted thousands of years ago formed the islands of Hawaii. The Hawaiian Archipelago consists of over 130 scattered points of land stretching some 1,600 miles in length from the Kure Atoll in the north to the Island of Hawaii in the south. The first Asian American in the United States Senate was Hawaii's Hiram Fong. Descended from Chinese immigrants, Fong was elected to the Senate in 1959. Hawaii was the 50th state admitted to the union on August 20th, 1959. Island flowers and colors used to represent each island. Niihau - Pupu Shell - White Kauai - Mokihana (Green Berry) - Purple Oahu - Ilima -Yellow Maui - Lokelani (Pink Cottage Rose) - Pink Molokai - White Kukui Blossom - Green Lanai - Kaunaoa (Yellow and Orange Air Plant) - Orange Kahoolawe - Hinahina (Beach Heliotrope) - Grey Big Island of Hawaii - Lehua Ohia - Red Hawaii has its own time zone (Hawaiian Standard Time.) There is no daylight savings time.) The time runs two hours behind Pacific Standard Time and five hours behind Eastern Standard Time. There are four counties in Hawaii (Kauai; city and county of Honolulu; Maui; and Hawaii). Each city has a mayor and council in charge. All subterranean minerals belong to the state. Except for state owned water, some lava stone, and minor granites and semi-precious minerals, there are few underground minerals. The wind blows east to west in Hawaii. The highest recorded temperature is 96' F (Honolulu Airport), but temperatures over 92' F generally occur only once or twice a year. The lowest temperature (under 3000 feet altitude) is 56' F. Temperatures under 60' F may occur but rarely more than once a year. Average daytime temp. (July) is 82' F. Average daytime temperature in January is 72' F. There are no racial or ethnic majorities in Hawaii. Everyone is a minority. Caucasians (Haoles) constitute about 34%; Japanese-American about 32%; Filipino-American about 16% and Chinese-American about 5%. It is very difficult to determine racial identification as most of the population has some mixture of ethnicities. ISLAND OF NIIHAU A privately owned island, with livestock raising as its principal industry. There is highly limited access by general public through helicopter landings at uninhabited sites. Legend says Niihau was the original home of the goddess Pele. The island has a population of 230, and is 69 square miles. ISLAND OF KAUAI The fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands. The Waialua River is one of five navigable river in Hawaii. It drains off Waialeale Mountain, which averages 488 inches of rain per year and is considered the wettest spot on earth. The Waimea, the Hanape'pe, the Lumahai and the Hanalei River are almost as big and quite navigable. The Hanalei River was dedicated a "national treasure" recently and is under government protection from use as a "place of business". ISLAND OF OAHU Honolulu is the largest city in the world -- at least it has the longest borders. According to the state constitution any island (or islet) not named as belonging to a county belongs to Honolulu. This makes all islands within the Hawaiian Archipelago, that stretch to Midway Island (1,500 miles northwest of Hawaii) part of Honolulu. Honolulu is about 1,500 miles long or more distance than halfway across the 48 contiguous states. Wai Golf Course is Hawaii's first municipal course. Honolulu is the nation's 11th largest metropolitan area. More than 100 world-renowned beaches ring Honolulu. Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States.

Super Ferry in Maui

Hello, Friends,For those of you who have not been following The Saga Of The Superferry here in Hawai‘i, let me see if I can summarize. A couple of years ago, our (Repub. of course) Gov gave an *exemption* to this new, *large* ferry business to come to Hawai‘i and not have to perform an Environmental Impact Statement. The LAW says they have to, but our Gov gave them a free pass. So, some local environmental groups took them to court, and it took two years, but both the HI State Supreme Court and the local Maui circuit court agreed that it was illegal to give them this exemption, forcing the performance of an EIS BEFORE they could resume business here. Just as an aside, this ruling came a couple of months ago when HSF (Hawai‘i Superferry) had only been operating here for a couple of days!! The whole State has been in a lot of turmoil about this issue, as many believe the ferry has military ties, (and there's a lot of proof to substantiate that belief), there's no doubt, at this point, that the ferry WILL kill whales, and it's more than likely that some very bad invasive pests will be transported from islands that have the pests to islands (like Maui) that DON'T have them, and so on. There are long lists of grievous complaints about the damage the ferry could do to our precious eco-systems, but the ferry company has the Gov in their pocket, AND they have wads of money to spend on PR and spin to convince an unsuspecting populace that it's a good thing. So, the State has been at odds, and very heatedly so, for most of this year, but especially now that the courts have ruled in favor of the "environmentalists". So, what's our Gov doing about that? Why, just what George W. Bush would do!!! She's calling a special session of State legislature to CHANGE THE LAW!!!! You know, the one they broke in the first place? The one she exempted them from? So, those of us who care very deeply about this, and DON'T want too have this VERY BAD PRECEDENCE set, have been working very hard at convincing our legislators to NOT bail out the ferry, and not buckle under the pressure of a Gov. who made a bad decision and is now trying to cover her tracks. And there's something YOU can do to help... and it will take you all of TEN SECONDS.http://starbulletin.com/poll/ Just click, and vote NO.If you're getting this message before Sunday, Oct 21st, please click on the link below and simply press the "NO" button. You will anonymously be registering an "opinion" in a poll that says you don't want HSF bailed out, and you don't want existing laws changed just to give one business a free pass. The Hawai‘i Superferry website has a link asking people to vote "yes", and they have managed to pull over 3,000 opinions to their side of the issue in the last few hours alone. I am asking you to not only cast your one vote, but to send my plea to everyone you can think of who will not only participate, but who will send this message to their networks as well. I'm looking for a GROUNDSWELL of people who will stand up and say, NO!!! This isn't right!!PLEASE PASS THIS NOTE ON - especially to like-minded people with large email networks.... our little islands need your help!!!Please go to the poll and vote "NO".http://starbulletin.com/poll/ And ask your friends to vote and to tell others to do the same. It's amazing what we can accomplish when we pool together....
