August 2024 update from Maui - 1 year after the firesI thought it would be timely to do an update on the situation on Maui. I'll send you to my other blog so I don't have to repeat myself. A lot has changed but a lot still needs to be done, and it's way more that I can say here quickly.Our tourist industry really took a hit over the past year, with visitor numbers down about 27% they say. Thankfully those visitors are spending heavily and that helps... thank you!There's a lot of drama about what's happening and what's not happening, as you can imagine. People are being housed and things are progressing, but it's a tough situation to just move on from. The February Maui Lifestyle newsletter for your convenience I'm posting a link to a newsletter I send out once a month, highlighting the Maui lifestyle. This month there was a lot about the local food and food security. We live on an island, and it's something we think about a lot since so much of our "food" is imported. The reality is that many good foods are grown here and we should be concentrating on eating more of that, and less of the stuff they ship in. Much of the imported stuff is processed and packaged and not all that healthy anyway.A broker's open at a local musician's home/farm in Kahakuloa was a real treat because he's also a farmer who loves his community. We toured the farm, ate a nice lunch of local foods, did an art project, and sang along with George. Tropical flowers on Maui are always a hitI've been a little lazy about blogging and it's time to change that! I know from seeing the stats that tropical flowers get some eyeballs, especially in the winter months, so here's some eye candy for those of you in the colder climates. First pic is of orchids growing on a tree, which is pretty easy to do in many parts of the island.The fragrant gardenia will bloom in the spring and fill the air with it's lovely scent.These orchids were growing in Lahaina Maui, before the fire event of last year.The Queen Emma spider lily is a huge flower that can be over 12" across, but with no real scent.And the bright orange hibiscus is a real head turner when you see a large bush covered in blooms. There's 2 parts to any address, let's not forget thatOK - here's a pet peeve of mine in the real estate business: All day long we get emails from other agents or title companies, advertising a listing or an open house. Too often they put just the street address and neglect to put the name of the town. HELLO, can you please let us know which town this is? Not everyone knows exactly where that street is, and I don't want to search through the whole email to know whether or not I'd consider going...There are TWO parts to every address. (Actually three if you count the state too.)Does this happen to you? Maui HI - fire disaster recovery September updateI know everyone wants an update about the state of things here on Maui. Honestly, it's out of my regular sphere of travel, and we haven't been over there as looky-loos so I have no first hand knowledge. There's plenty of images online, and that's a real eye opener. I think it's still going to hit me hard when I actually see it. The outpouring of help and financial aid has been tremendous, and it seems to be improving every day in every way. I'm really proud to call Maui my home.Since I send out newsletters twice a month, I decided to share some of that... here's some of the things that were included in the Sept 1 newsletter:(BTW, That's the Lahaina Gateway Center pictured above - a hub for supplies to be dropped off and picked up. This newer shopping center in Lahaina was spared from the fires and it's been a convenient spot to connect those in need with generous donations. Volunteers manage the logistics that help those who are affected and still living in the area north of the burn. FEMA and insurance personnel set up shop here and in other locations.)Recovery update... It's been almost a month since the fires, and recovery efforts continue. It's going to be a long road. Local businesses and organizations are contributing in many ways. Hawaii Business Magazine has put together a comprehensive list that they keep updating. Maui Now also keeps an update of services offered to the fire victims, including some maps of the affected areas in Lahaina and Upcountry. Communications are vital after a disaster, and these local tech entities stepped in to provide much needed internet and telecommunications services, including Starlink.There are plans to upgrade the air siren system and use them for fires in the future, as well as for tsunami warnings, but there won't be the usual monthly alert on Sept 1 this time due to a statewide 1 day vigil.We need your help - come and visit. Thanks for all the support and love, but Maui still needs visitors to keep the economy going. Please don't cancel your trip here if you're on the fence. There are many other parts of the island ready to welcome visitors. Some airlines are offering special rates right now. Some alternatives to booking a hotel room are: AirBnB; VRBO; Home Exchange; and more home exchange sites.Some tiny homes will be a temporary solution to the housing crunch, with 60 or more small portable units built by Continest arriving and being installed in Kahului as a stop gap measure. While it may not be a perfect solution, they offer a secure place to house people and their belongings until something more permanent comes along, and this opens the door to more pre-fab building opportunities.Celebrities step up - Oprah and The Rock team up and create a fund to pay cash directly to those mostly in need, The People's Fund of Maui.It pays to keep your house well maintained and ready for fires. This is what saved a house in Lahaina that was surrounded by fires. Maui fire update from the north shore of MauiOur recent Hawaiian disaster has made ripples across the globe and it seems everyone wants to know if we're safe, so I hope this helps.Yes we are safe in Haiku Maui because it's on the windward side, upwind of the fires, and generally green and lush due to rain. Maui has been suffering from a drought, but not the whole island. Hana, Kipahulu, Nahiku, Huelo, Haiku - these are some of the wetter and more jungly parts where wild fires are not expected or normal, and even in a drought we stay green.On the other side of the island, it's dry, it's hot and it's more densely built up and populated. With the super high winds we experienced earlier this week, it became the perfect conditions for fires to spread quickly. Firefighters were busy putting out fires in the Upcountry area during the daytime and evening of Tuesday (and still, I might add). On Tuesday night, some fires started above Lahaina town, with winds accelerating coming down the mountain, causing flames and embers to cover ground so quickly that fire personnel couldn't get there in time before the whole town was engulfed. There's basically only one 2-lane road in and out, which often causes a bottle neck in the best of times. So in the worst of times, there was not much that could be done. It was too windy for aircraft to be of any help. Road access was sketchy, and being used by people fleeing. Over 20 power poles were down and still live. Cell towers were knocked out. Communications were quickly non existent. Even the harbor was burned, boats, docks and all.... these are pictures of things we'll never see again!It's a real tragedy that we're still trying to wrap our heads around as it unfolds. My heart breaks for the loss of lives and the destruction. I'm also sorry that tourists have been displaced and others won't be able to make their much hoped for trips here. It's an epic situation, and it's being handled with a huge response on all levels, including the local community.Some things I've learned from this and other disasters: you never know when something awful will happen pay attention to your immediate surroundings at all times - YOU are responsible for you always be prepared for an emergency with ample food, water and other important supplies to last a few weeks or more keep a go-bag in your car with basics to cover your immediate needs keep your gas tank topped up, and your batteries charged up don't expect help to arrive immediately because it's not easy for them either have a plan and discuss it with your household about where to go and how to keep in touch the community will help, so be part of the community and know your neighbors, check on neighbors keep fit, be prepared If you want to help please try these resources:Hawai'i Magazine has put together a list of reputable sourcesThanks to everyone who checked in with us to see if we're safe. Some of my favorite Maui flowers - so many choices!I'm having a hard time deciding which flowers to highlight for the May 2023 Challenge, we have so many lovely ones to consider. I think it comes down to the plumeria flower because of the fragrance, which always reminds me of the islands. From the first moment when I stepped off that plane (back in the days when you actually descended onto the tarmac) and was greeted by the sweet scent of flowers, I always associate the plumeria smell with Hawai'i.These soft 5-petal flowers come in such a variety of colors, from pure white to bright yellow and pink, and combinations of all three. They say the ones with the yellow centers have the best smell and that might be true.We don't have a lot of these trees on our Haiku farm, because they actually prefer the drier hotter side of the island with the sandier soil. So when we get flowers on our little trees we really appreciate it. They make great leis as the flowers will hold their shape and scent for hours, even a whole day.They can be propagated from a simple cutting of a branch, so they are easy to grow. Learn more about these tropical plants on Wikipedia.Are they really a spring flower? Yes and no. Some varieties will flower all year round, but other trees will actually lose their leaves and look barren over the winter, and then come around in the spring, with new leaves and a burst of new blossoms! The calamonsi fruit is the perfect size for youCalamonsi/Calamondin: These little citrus fruits are just the right size for individual servings... in a cocktail, or on a plate with some fish/seafood. Native to the Philippines, you'll find them in many Hawai'i gardens, and if you're lucky they bear fruit all year round, like the tree pictured above. You might also try growing them in your climate, if you bring the potted plant indoors for the winter months. You can pick them while still green, for a tart flavor, or wait until they ripen to orange for a delicious sweet/sour burst. They also make a refreshing drink if you add some sweetener and water. That's them in the picture along with some other citrus grown here on Maui. If you want to enjoy these fruits and have some planted in your garden, then Maui could be the place for you!
