Big waves pound the north shore of Maui marking the start of winter This week we have seen some really big winter swells hitting the north shore of Maui. Yesterday the 35' surf got everyone excited to head out to JAWS in Peahi, Haiku. The Hana Highway and Hahana Rd intersection was like a parking lot as people carpooled or walked down to the cliff side to see the big wave surfers. Today was another beautiful day on Maui - the Kona storm has passed and things are back to normal here on the north shore. This was the scene at Ho'okipa Beach Park, with the usual smattering of beach-goers, surfers, windsurfers and kite-boarders. Waves were mid size, nothing like the 20-footers we had last week. With the warm water and gentle tradewinds, it was a perfect day for going to the beach. I stopped in with my dad and we both took some pictures.
