Cacao trees grow on Maui - buy a home and grow cacao
Who wants to grow some cacao, or chocolate trees?  You can find some properties for sale on Maui with cacao trees growing.  More and more people are planting some of these trees just for fun, and some are planning to go with commercial production.  They do well in Haiku with the mild climate and ample rain.
Search for Haiku Maui homes for sale here.
This cacao pod is growing on a specimen tree at 480 Puniawa Rd. which I've blogged about recently as the "Brando" estate since it was formerly owned by … (9 comments)

buy a home: Maui banks and mortgages - who's the biggest lender? - 09/16/17 07:34 PM
Maui banks and mortgages.  When it comes to buying a home in Hawaii, we strongly urge you to use a local bank or lender, since some mainland lenders won't fund to Hawaii.  It's an awful feeling to find this out at the last minute, when you're all set to close on a house sale and things go off track due to the lender.  We have good solid banks here, and they can help you get a mortgage to buy a home on Maui.  There are also other lenders ready to help, and I'm happy to give you some names if you … (6 comments)

Everyone looks forward to this time of year on Maui, when the winter swells bring big waves to the north shore.

buy a home: Komoda Store and Bakery in Makawao Maui is 100 years old - 10/27/16 09:42 AM
Everyone in Makawao and Upcountry Maui knows about Komoda Store and Bakery.  This year marks their 100th anniversary of serving the public.  They started out as just a simple coffee shop back in the day way before Starbucks was found on every corner.

Komoda Store at 3674 Baldwin Ave Makawao, HI 96768
It's a small general store that serves the community, but they're quite famous for their bakery products, most notably the cream puffs and donuts on a stick.  The flaky crusted pies come in flavors you might not find on the mainland, such as coconut and azuki bean.  Check out the … (8 comments)

It's Purple Rain upcountry in Kula right now!
With all the winter rains and the springtime weather, Kula Maui is blessed with a colorful display of purple Jacaranda blossoms. Each year these beautiful trees adorn the Kula highway and neighborhoods, and drop their petals making a lovely purple carpet underneath.
Jacaranda trees are abundant in the Kulamanu and Jacaranda Grove subdivisions, off Lower Kimo Drive.  Homes in here sell for around $850,000 and upwards.  The views are fantastic!
Agapanthus, or Nile Lilies, also show thier colors in the spring, bursting with purple and white tufted stalks.

buy a home: Hipstamatic pics from Makawao town in Upcountry Maui - 04/17/16 12:27 PM
Just a quick trip with the Hipstamatic Camera app as we walk through Makawao Maui Hawaii.
This cool little town has kept in touch with the past by restoring and preserving the old shops and buildings.  The country vibe is alive and well.
Rustic and rusty is OK and makes for a lot of charm in these boutique shops.
Take a break from any activity and grab a bite. Park your bike or horse a while.
It's always fun to poke your head in the door of any of these stores, galleries and restaurants.

Tropical gardens at Mama's Fish House Restaurant, Maui
If you follow my blog you'll know I post a lot of pictures of the exceptional food at Mama's Fish House, or photos of the views.  There's no denying the food is the star of the show when dining here, but there's more to the whole experience than just that.
They also have beautiful tropical gardens for guests to enjoy while they wait. Take a look at these pictures as an example, and you'll see what I mean. Lots of palms, ti leaves, bromeliads, dracaenas, giant taro leaves and more.

Lush tropical landscape in Haiku Maui HI 96708
What a delight to see this Haiku Maui property with so many tropical flowers and plants - orhids, bromeliads, anthuriums, gingers, palm trees, bamboos and more.  It's amazing how much variety you can grow on just 2 acres.  The warm humid climate in Haiku is very conducive to the lush growth of all manner of plants.  Some love the shade and others love full sunlight, so try a bit of both.
As a Realtor on the North Shore I can see and appreciate a lot of properties with landscapes like this for sale.  A … (4 comments)

Kihei Maui boat ramp makes for easy access to the ocean
You can find the Kihei Boat Ramp in South Kihei, just south of Kamaole Beach Park III and directly across from the entrance to Maui Kamaole Resort.
If you're thinking of owning a Maui condo... search Maui condos for sale by name!
The ramp open to the public and there's plenty of parking for cars, boats and trailers, and buses.  The protected little harbor makes it safe and easy to launch a boat or kayak.

buy a home: Great food at Nuka in Haiku Maui Hawaii - 01/31/15 11:20 AM
Great food at Nuka in Haiku Maui Hawaii
We had another great dinner the other night at Nuka in downtown Haiku Maui. It's a Japanese restaurant and sushi house, but they are always trying new things. This time we tried the Dynamite dish which consists of scallops and mushrooms and a yummy cheese sauce. It's not typical Japanese fare but it sure was good. Very rich and satisfying.
Of course we also had some other good dishes.  A platter of sushi made with extremely fresh local fish. They really know how to prepare it and present it. The Asian Fries were another … (4 comments)

Living off the land in Haiku Maui - wild pig for dinner
Sometimes when we visit our cattle ranch on the north shore of Maui, we find some wild pigs running loose and tearing up the pastures. They are such a nuisance really, destroying the nice level ground and digging holes as they root for food. They are a problem all over the island as they spread a lot of invasive plant species wherever they go. So we don't feel bad when we "harvest" a few for the freezer.  There is no shortage of these pigs.
You wouldn't think these small … (13 comments)

The new season of Hawaii Life has started - look for me!
Last Sunday marked the beginning of the new season of the Hawaii Life TV show, named for our company Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers. There's 2 new episodes a week and my episode is coming up soon, but I don't know when. You'll have to watch it or record it.
I posted some sneak peek teaser pictures on my Hawaii Life blog, where you can get a glimse of 2 of the home listings, and one of the beaches featured in my story from the north shore of Maui.

Upcountry Maui is a great place to live - Makawao, Pukalani and Kula
Maui has so much to offer, and so many diverse climates.  The area known as UPCOUNTRY includes the towns of Makawao, Pukalani, and Kula. (I guess parts of Haiku would also be considered upcountry, but Haiku usually gets included as North Shore, along with Paia.)  What they all have is common is that they are on the slopes of our predominant mountain, Haleakala.  The upcountry area rises above the central valley which is more or less at sea level.  The temperatures are cooler and the pace of life … (8 comments)
