canada: Thanksgiving thoughts while in Canada this year

I'm on an extended trip to Canada which brings me to Thanksgiving which is just around the corner. It feels like winter is also around the corner up here with the maple leaves falling to the ground and a chill at night. There's already snow in some parts!
I'm missing my warm Maui island and thinking back to harvest from my garden in other times. They say it's still hot there and I should be thankful to be somewhere cool. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence! Either way, I'm thankful for food on the … (14 comments)

Now you see it, now you don't - hiding in plain sight. I love how this "box" was camouflaged into the surroundings so it wouldn't have to look ugly. Taken in Vancouver BC, which is a big city that knows how to put its best face forward. Every season brings out beautiful colors and textures, and the changing landscape is wonderful to behold. People in this city really love to garden and they take pride in the surroundings. Maybe we could all learn something from a simple act such as this. Thanks for reading my Maui blog... Are the appliances included with this new home? Yes of course, you think... It's common practice here in Hawaii that all the appliances are included with a home sale. Fridge, stove, washer and dryer - it's a given. But what about that water heater? In the Hawaii purchase contract there is a paragraph E-2 for inclusions, where you can check off the boxes for things like: refrigerator; range; microwave; washer; dryer; SOLAR WATER SYSTEM. But, there's NO other mention of a water heater. Some homes come with the usual electric water heater, some have solar water heaters, and some have on-demand propane … (9 comments)

Happy Canada Day - 150 years and still going strong We just got back from a great vacation in Canada, visiting families on both ends of the country. There's a lot of excitement for the sesquicentennial, or 150th birthday of the country. Today, July 1st is that day and there will be lots of celebrations all weekend. Check out the Guardian's Day in Pictures We did take advantage of discounts on many things, thanks to this big event. Notably the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish BC.
