gardening: Some of my favorite Maui flowers - so many choices! - 05/25/23 07:50 PM
Some of my favorite Maui flowers - so many choices!I'm having a hard time deciding which flowers to highlight for the May 2023 Challenge, we have so many lovely ones to consider.  I think it comes down to the plumeria flower because of the fragrance, which always reminds me of the islands.  From the first moment when I stepped off that plane (back in the days when you actually descended onto the tarmac) and was greeted by the sweet scent of flowers, I always associate the plumeria smell with Hawai'i.
These soft 5-petal flowers come in such a variety of colors, from … (20 comments)

gardening: The calamonsi fruit is the perfect size for you - 04/30/23 03:13 PM
The calamonsi fruit is the perfect size for youCalamonsi/Calamondin:  These little citrus fruits are just the right size for individual servings... in a cocktail, or on a plate with some fish/seafood.  Native to the Philippines, you'll find them in many Hawai'i gardens, and if you're lucky they bear fruit all year round, like the tree pictured above.  You might also try growing them in your climate, if you bring the potted plant indoors for the winter months.
You can pick them while still green, for a tart flavor, or wait until they ripen to orange for a delicious sweet/sour burst.  They also … (11 comments)

gardening: I thought I would get more blogging done during this pandemic - 04/15/20 01:45 AM
I thought I would get more blogging done during this pandemic.
Can't show properties, and buyers from off island have virtually disappeared.  Real estate activity on Maui is way down.
With the "stay at home" order for people in Hawaii, and no desire to go out to the shops or beaches, it would be a perfect time to get down to some serious blogging, you'd think.
Not so much!
The news never stops about the COVID-19 crisis that's spread across the world.  With access to media coverage from all countries, it's an endless smorgasbord of updates and body counts.  Like a train wreck that … (19 comments)

gardening: Thankful for friends who turn me on to favorite herbs - 11/13/18 03:54 PM
We love to garden and grow food, which is very easy to do in Haiku Maui.  It's nice to have friends who share this passion, and bring us new plants to try.  Over the years we have incorporated a lot of great herbs into our gardens.
From right to left: chili peppers; oregano; turmeric; my chickens!
Mike brought us Hawaiian chili peppers which are probably some of the hottest peppers you can find.  They are very small and grow all year round on the bush, so there's always an abundance of these fiery little gems ready for picking.  How much do you really … (12 comments)

gardening: Purple and white eggplants from my Haiku Maui garden - 12/09/17 05:57 PM
Purple and white eggplants from my Haiku Maui garden
For a while at the end of summer my eggplants were going off!  This year we even had some white ones that did well.  They come in a lot of shapes and sizes and colors too.  Here in Hawaii the long purple eggplant can be found in most markets.
I wouldn't say eggplant is my favorite vegetable to eat, but they are fun to grow and they look so beautiful when they are all shiny and plump.
Eggplants do well in the Haiku Maui climate, and will grow for a long time, making it … (15 comments)

gardening: Beautiful plumeria flowers seen in upcountry Maui - 11/13/17 02:30 PM
These beautiful plumeria flowers were photographed in upcountry Maui - Makawao, Pukalani and Haiku.  They really bring a warm tropical feeling to any property, with their delicate fragrance and soft petals.

Plumeria trees prefer a dry sandy soil and you'll see them growing in the sunny seaside towns as well.  Easy to grow from just a piece of broken branch stuck into the ground.  Strung into a lei, these flowers will brighten your day!

gardening: Red asparagus beans growing in Haiku Maui HI - 10/06/16 12:33 PM
I'm showing off my red asparagus beans we've grown in Haiku Maui. They're also known as "yard long beans" but I have never been able to get one quite that long!  The pods usually grow as pairs, with the occasional set of three beans pods.  I like to let a few of the pods go all the way to maturity so I can have some seeds for the next crop. Otherwise, you pick them before they get too fat.
Asparagus beans can also be green, but it's kind of fun to have the red ones because they really stand out on the vines, … (11 comments)

gardening: Who's been eating my Jamaican lilikoi flowers? - 06/08/16 01:03 PM
Aha!  Gotcha. So you're the culprit who's been eating the flowers of the Jamaican passion fruits, or lilikoi.
I spied these nastly looking caterpillars on the leaves, looked around and found about 10 of them. No wonder we weren't getting any of the delicious sweet fruits to set, since these pests have a taste for the flowers. And sure enough, I also found a butterfly just opening his wings and hanging from a nearby leaf.
Since then, with some diligent hand picking of the pests, we now have plenty of fruits ripening on the vines. These vines were a gift from another gardener … (4 comments)

gardening: Orchids abound at 435 Ho'olawa Rd, Haiku Maui Hawaii - 05/05/16 01:41 PM
435 Ho'olawa Rd, Haiku Maui Hawaii is a botanical delight, with abundant tropical trees and flowers.  The owners of this country property have built it from the ground up and planted all kinds of fun things.  After turning this home into a B&B they called it Windward Garden Bed & Breakfast.

Orchids do very well in the humid climate of Maui, and you just have to park them in a safe place outdoors, like a crook of a tree branch, and give them a little spritz of fertilizer once in a while.  In return they will show off their colorful and beautiful … (8 comments)

gardening: Lush tropical landscape in Haiku Maui HI 96708 - 07/02/15 11:50 AM
Lush tropical landscape in Haiku Maui HI 96708
What a delight to see this Haiku Maui property with so many tropical flowers and plants - orhids, bromeliads, anthuriums, gingers, palm trees, bamboos and more.  It's amazing how much variety you can grow on just 2 acres.  The warm humid climate in Haiku is very conducive to the lush growth of all manner of plants.  Some love the shade and others love full sunlight, so try a bit of both.
As a Realtor on the North Shore I can see and appreciate a lot of properties with landscapes like this for sale.  A … (4 comments)
