What can I say, it's Monday and sometimes a little lightness is required.
These are ti plants, and the leaves are called ti leaves, but not the kind you make a drink from. The leaves have many uses here in Hawaii and almost every yard will have some growing. They say it's good luck to plant one at every corner of your house. It's an easy post - a picture of a bottlebrush tree taken while touring homes for sale in Kula Maui. We see so many beautifully landscaped yards and I can't help but notice and take pictures.
The upcountry climate favors more temperate species, unlike the hot and steamy north shore, or the arid lowlands by the beaches.
Kula Maui is where you can grow such fruit trees as apples and peaches, veggies like artichokes and cauliflower, along with so many other flowers and foods.

Springtime in Hawaii - tropical flowers are blooming.
There's no end to the beautiful flowers in Hawaii. Here's some colorful hibiscus flowers growing at the Hawaiian Sea Spirits Organic Vodka Distillery, in Kula Maui. On a recent tour we enjoyed the grounds and the sugar cane plants. It's a beautiful spot to take a tour and enjoy the scenery too.
What kind of tropical flowers are easy to grow? Many kinds are very easy!
Some you just start from cuttings, stuck in some soil.

Do you like to garden? While pineapples used to be a big crop here in the islands, you won't find such large areas growing them anymore. But most people will grow a few in their yard by simply planting the cut top from a table fruit. They don't need much care.

We love to garden and grow food, which is very easy to do in Haiku Maui. It's nice to have friends who share this passion, and bring us new plants to try. Over the years we have incorporated a lot of great herbs into our gardens.

My gardens in Haiku Maui are always growing and we usually have a series of ongoing garden patches, so there will always be something to harvest. Ideally we'll start a new section every couple of months, but in the depth of winter we just let it all go to give ourselves a break. New plants are started from seeds on a regular basis, or whenever I remember to do it. I'm lucky to have a farmer husband who will prepare the soil and add all the organic amendments, and leaves it to me to get creative with the growing.

These gigantic flowers really make a statement - spider lilies stand out! These tropical flowers bloom in the spring/summer season here in Hawaii.

White is the most common color, but they also come in a purplish red shade which is called the Queen Emma spider lily.

I'm showing off my red asparagus beans we've grown in Haiku Maui. They're also known as "yard long beans" but I have never been able to get one quite that long! The pods usually grow as pairs, with the occasional set of three beans pods. I like to let a few of the pods go all the way to maturity so I can have some seeds for the next crop. Otherwise, you pick them before they get too fat.

Have you ever seen a jackfruit growing on a tree? They are huge! A large tree will be covered with them, on the trunk and hanging from the branches too.
These jackfruits are growing in Haiku Maui where it's the perfect climate for tropical fruits and flowers, with plenty of rain and humidity. Friends of mine planted this as a small tree and now it's a huge tree with abundant fruits which she sells at the local farmers market.

Yes you really can grow a pineapple from the cut off top, as you can see here. These were grown from recycled pineapple tops. It helps if you're very patient as it can take years.
It shouldn't take you years to find a home for sale in Haiku Maui, especially if you have helpf from a local Haiku Realtor like myself. Buy a home in Haiku and start growing pineapples!
