hawaii: Can you ever get tired of this beach scene at Kuau Maui? - 03/05/20 05:35 PM
Can you ever get tired of this beach scene at Kuau Maui?
It's not the first time, and it won't be the last, for me to show off this beautiful peaceful beach scene in front of Mama's Fish House in Kuau Maui Hawaii.  When we lived just a few houses away from this beach, I would walk to the beach every morning and comb the sand for seashells.  The tidepools are great for dipping in, with no worries about getting swept out to sea.

If you ever get a chance to eat at this award winning restaurant, then you'll have to take … (13 comments)

hawaii: Grateful for so much good food today and everyday on Maui! - 11/28/19 07:33 PM
Grateful for so much good food today and everyday! Living on Maui is the best!
Living in Hawaii means access to good fresh food every day of the year.  Not only from our own gardens, but also from local shops and farmers markets, and restaurants.

Haliimaile General Store - sashimi appetizer
We usually have something growing and eat our own produce all the time.  These days it's oranges and star fruits from the orchard, and pasture raised beef and wild pork in the freezer.  We have our own egg laying hens, though sometimes I wonder if they aren't pets more than producers!

Video at the Maui Aloha Classic - windsurfing contest Oct 2019
Here's a link to a short video taken at Ho'okipa Beach Park, in Paia Maui.  The PWA Aloha Classic was on hold because the waves were too big and dangerous.  This annual competition pits the best men and women windsurfers in the world.  But despite the lack of contestants battling it out on the waves, the beach scene was colorful and interesting, as it usually is.
Thanks for watching.  I hope you enjoy this small glimpse of life on Maui's north shore, when the waves are pumping!

In honor of World Turtle Day, here's some turtles and turtle images for you to enjoy.

On Maui they're fixing fences to keep the turtles and their sandy nests safe, so we can have more baby turtles this season. Read about it HERE in the Maui News.

hawaii: Pink and yellow flowers - it's springtime in Hawaii - 04/11/19 03:00 AM
Springtime in Hawaii - tropical flowers are blooming.
There's no end to the beautiful flowers in Hawaii.  Here's some colorful hibiscus flowers growing at the Hawaiian Sea Spirits Organic Vodka Distillery, in Kula Maui.  On a recent tour we enjoyed the grounds and the sugar cane plants.  It's a beautiful spot to take a tour and enjoy the scenery too.
What kind of tropical flowers are easy to grow?  Many kinds are very easy!
Some you just start from cuttings, stuck in some soil.

Halama St. in Kihei Maui - an oceanfront neighborhood
If you want an oceanfront home in Kihei Maui, the options are somewhat limited, because much of the coastal real estate is taken up by condominium resorts, and beach parks.  South Kihei Road is the main artery along the coastline, and there's a few streets that extend beyond this and offer some neighborhoods with single family homes.  Uluniu Rd. is one, and Halama St. is another.  Let's see what's happening on Halama St....
Halama Street - runs between Kalama Park to the south, and up to W. Kapu Rd. to the north.

hawaii: Picking papayas from the tree in Haiku Maui Hawaii - 02/27/19 03:53 PM
Papayas are a favorite tropical fruit around the world.
We are blessed with a bounty of papayas this season, despite the wet winter.  It seems the rich soil from the previous veggie garden has made a big difference.  So I put together a short 1 minute video to show what the trees look like and how to pick the fruits, since many people have no idea where papayas come from.
It takes about a year to year and a half from planting to picking.  To really be on top of things you'd be starting more seeds every year or two to replace the … (7 comments)

hawaii: Everybody loves a sea turtle on the beach - especially on Maui - 01/30/19 01:00 AM
Everybody loves a sea turtle on the beach - especially on Maui
In the past few years the sea turtle populations have really made a big comeback here on Maui.  These turtles were recently seen at Ho'okipa Beach Park on Maui's north shore, and snapped by Carlos Jabour while on vacation.
Visitors to the island love to stop and watch them and take pictures.  The turtles really don't do much, just lay on the beach, and come and go as they please.  They get a chance to rest on the sand and catch some rays, just like the tourists who flock here each … (22 comments)

My new format Maui newsletter for Jan 15, 2019
This new version went out today and it features a lot of the year-end statistics for Maui County.... residential and vacant land.  The plan for 2019 is to send out the e-news twice a month.  One time focuses on the stats, and the next time showcases lifestyle.  I think it's going to be more fun this way.
I'm trying to use more video, and just off-the-cuff live ones with me talking about things here on Maui.  It took a while to get comfortable with it but now I just do a … (8 comments)

hawaii: A box of goodness from the garden in Haiku Maui - 01/10/19 12:15 AM
The new year is off to a good start.
It's great to come home from a vacation on the cold and wintry mainland and go "shopping" for food in the garden.  With a freezer full of our own Maui grass-fed beef and a few things from the garden we've been eating quite well.

hawaii: Thankful for friends who turn me on to favorite herbs - 11/13/18 03:54 PM
We love to garden and grow food, which is very easy to do in Haiku Maui.  It's nice to have friends who share this passion, and bring us new plants to try.  Over the years we have incorporated a lot of great herbs into our gardens.
From right to left: chili peppers; oregano; turmeric; my chickens!
Mike brought us Hawaiian chili peppers which are probably some of the hottest peppers you can find.  They are very small and grow all year round on the bush, so there's always an abundance of these fiery little gems ready for picking.  How much do you really … (12 comments)

My October profile picture update challenge - this is an entry in the challenge by Paul Henderson

The old picture was taken at the Hawaii Life office in Wailea a couple of years ago. Winston came over with a professional camera and used a white screen background so many of us Hawaii Lifers could get a nice head shot.  The plan was to have some consistency on their website, and have a lot of the pictures look casual and fun, yet similar.  It was a good idea and I thought it was going to happen again each year, but apparently not.

North shore Maui double rainbow from Maui Hunter on Vimeo.
Just a short peek at a brilliant double rainbow as a little shower blows in on the trade winds here on Maui's north shore.  You know what they say... where there's rain, there's rainbows, and we get plenty of them here in Hawaii.
In fact, so many that here's another quick video taken from the front porch/lanai at my home in Haiku Maui.  Good thing my iPhone was handy because these don't last long.
