The Island and The Bluffs are 2 side by side gated communities which are part of the greater Maui Lani development in Central Maui. These neighborhoods were developed and built out recently, in the early part of this decade. Owners can enjoy being surrounded by The Dunes Golf Course which makes for some open space and restful views. Proximity to the County and State buildings, and the local hospital mean it's very convenient for those who work nearby in Wailuku and Kahului.

Where did the Mokulele Highway go? Maui breaking news!
Well the old answer would be: The highway went from Kahului in the north to Kihei in the south.
The new answer is: The Mokulele Highway (Route 311) has been renamed and it's now called Maui Veterans Highway. Governor David Ige signed the bill in April to make the change. The signs are now up, so don't be confused when you see them. Not so sure if Google is paying attention yet.

Maui's first medical marijuana dispensary finally opens!
It's been 17 years since medical marijuana has been legal in the state of Hawaii, and the first dispensary has now been green-lighted to open the doors and sell product to patients. Two outlets have been licensed to sell cannabis products on the island of Maui, and Maui Grown Therapies has passed all inspections and requirements to offer the dried flower buds for sale. Other related products are still waiting for the thumb's up from the Hawaii Department of Health.

We're big fans of the local food truck scene here on Maui, and recently we found 2 more new food trucks in Kahului, in the parking lot at Home Depot! It seems that this trend just keeps getting better, and it's getting hard to decide where to eat these days.
Gyros is the name of the new Mediterranean food truck, so of course we had to try it first. The beef/lamb gyros sandwich on soft pita bread was a winner - so tasty and fresh with tangy tzatziki sauce all over it. Just the right amount for lunch, and only $9.00 which … (3 comments)

When you're in Kahului Maui and ready for a quick lunch, there's a food truck court closeby. You can find the entrance off Haleakala Highway, across from the Costco gas station. 591 Haleakala Highway that is. Lots of free parking!
When we went last week three food trucks were operating and we chose the one selling fresh raw and cooked fish... Like Poke? The Art of Trash show - Maui Mall - Kahului Maui Hawaii
This priceless creation was crafted from plastic flotsam that ended up on Maui's beaches, and featured at the annual Art of Trash show at the Maui Mall.
Each year artists contribute their works which have been make from stuff that would otherwise be in the waste stream. Don't you think it's very cool that some people can have a vision to recycle complete junk and make something worthy of keeping?
These art works are offered for sale and it was nice to see that many were already purchased.

This year was the 16th annual Maui Film Festival which is held in Wailea and Kahului. One of the highlights of the event is the Celestial Cinema which is an outdoor venue on the golf course in Wailea. You can bring your beach chairs or a blanket and sit under the stars to watch a new film on the big screen.
Here we are getting settled about an hour before the film starts. Just find a place to sit and get comfortable. It's very well organized by Barry and Stella Rivers.

It's always an exciting time on Maui when a new big box retailer comes to town. This month we are celebrating the first Target store, amid lots of hoopla. The central Maui location is perfect for locals and visitors.

Here on Maui it's a really big deal - a new Zippy's restaurant. Talk about pent up demand! Some people have been going every day since they opened about a week ago. And aren't we special...Maui Zippy's prices are slightly higher than those on Oahu.
Zippy's is a fast food restaurant from Oahu, where they have 24 outlets. Zippy's was started by the Higa family in 1966, even before the first McDonald's opened in Hawaii. They specialize in Zip Pac (bento box), Zip Min (ramen) and Napples (turnovers), chili, local style food and Napoleon's Bakery.

You might be curious about what's available on Maui for shopping. Do we have those big box stores that we can't seem to live without? The answer is YES we do. Here's the short list of what's available in the main city of Kahului. These are all located within a few blocks, along Dairy Road:

I stumbled into a new place the other day while my husband was filling his fuel barrels at Maui Oil Company. We were in Kahului Maui, and I didn't want to wait in the truck. I wandered out in the misty rain and peeked my head into the first shop I came to. It's a small shop that's not really very visible, and I don't think they get a lot of walk in traffic. In the central valley area of Maui is the town of Kahului. This is the commercial center for our island, where you will find the shopping malls, movie theaters, and lots of services. Kahului is also where most of you will land when arriving by airplane, as the airport is just on the edge of town.
