local expert: A Cute Back Yard - is this what buyers want? - 07/06/08 04:27 PM
PAIA MAUI HAWAII 96779 -  Cute home for sale, with a really sweet back yard.  I just had to take some pictures when I was showing this Paia home to a client.  The owner has really put a lot of work into the yard, making some nice seating areas.  The flowering Royal Poinciana tree is in full bloom at this time of year, and it was gorgeous.   I know that the appraisers don't care much for this kind of thing, but what about buyers?   This single family home is priced in the mid $600,000's and seems to be a little high … (26 comments)

local expert: Be Happy... a new shop in Paia Maui, Hawaii. See some pictures. - 06/08/08 02:37 PM

Be Happy....
It's a new store in Paia Maui, at 71 Baldwin Ave.

Lisa Alo (an AR member btw) just opened this sweet book and music store that features local talent.  We have some great musicians and writers and artists right here on Maui, and why not showcase them all in one place!
Lisa plans on having book signings, live music and other demonstrations in her spacious shop.  This new Paia shop will be sure to attract a lot of attention in the months to come.  There is parking right next to the building, and it's also … (10 comments)

local expert: Peahi Farms in Haiku Maui - UPDATE - new entry is looking good! - 05/29/08 03:08 PM

As I drive this new oceanfront development almost every day, I like to see what's going on.  Over the past few months there have been some nice improvements... rock walls, concrete apron and driveway, and the planting of trees.
These pictures were just snapped as I drove by, the traffic was very slow, or stopped anyway.  It's shaping up to be a really great subdivision, and they say it won't be an exclusionary gated community, so we shall see.
They still keep it closed … (3 comments)

local expert: Indigo Paia - Handmade rugs available in Paia Maui Hawaii - 96779 - 05/13/08 06:58 PM

It's a shop in Historic Paia Maui - they sell beautiful handmade wool rugs from Pakistan.  It's a family run business that works with refugees, helping them make a living.  This outlet in Paia is unique on Maui - there's nothing else like it.  Also available for sale: jewelry, antique objects, fabrics, statues, art, photography - all with an exotic Asian flair.

The rugs are rich and soft, and some are even silky to the touch.  Any one of these would be a wonderful addition to your home on … (5 comments)

local expert: Got a good deal on some batteries... for power on Maui. - 04/15/08 08:53 PM

Got a good deal on some batteries... $20 bucks each.
Somebody knew somebody - they were dismantling a back up power system for a high tech facility on Haleakala, Maui, and hundreds of these perfectly good batteries were being unloaded for cheap.  My husband got 20.  He got a solar panel from another friend, and a old inverter we had kicking around, and made himself a free-standing power system - this one for the barn in Haiku.  No more starting up the generator to run the grinder or compressor!  And lights at night too.
Many places on Maui rely of off grid technology for their power … (9 comments)

local expert: Zillow can be your tool - why not use it? - 03/25/08 08:30 AM

I went to zillow.com today just to see if anything was new in "my towns".  It's quite amazing that it's such a blank slate still.  I'm going to use it as a tool to connect with buyers and sellers of Maui real estate.  I don't care if their zestimates are inaccurate - that's just another reason why a buyer needs an agent, and hopefully they will contact me.
Previously I have uploaded photos of my towns, because NOBODY else has.  Why not?
Here's what I did today....
In my towns there were no discussions going.  So I started some about RELOCATION PACKAGES, and put … (26 comments)

local expert: Maui County Tax Assessments are out - How to Appeal - 03/22/08 04:25 PM

ASSESSMENTS Maui County property tax assessments have been mailed out recently.  If you own property on Maui you've probably already seen yours.  Were you shocked?  I know a lot of people who were surprised at the new higher amounts.  If you think you have been overassessed, here's what you can do...
APPEALS If you do not agree with the assessed value or tax classification on your assessment notice, you may file an appeal with the Real Property Tax Division Board of Review or the Tax Appeal Court. There is a $15.00 fee to appeal to the Board of Review. The cost for filing … (5 comments)

local expert: I'm going to be an e-Pro ~ finally! - 01/24/08 01:20 PM
I signed up to be an e-Pro!
This week we had a free workshop with Joeann Fossland, a certified coach and e-Pro, at our Realtors Association of Maui.  After she spoke, everyone was quite excited to sign up for the course.  I did too, even though everyone tells me..."but you already know all that stuff don't you?".  Well do I?  How will I know until I find out?
I look at it this way.... if I DO already know all that stuff, then shouldn't I have the e-Pro designation to let consumers know that I know?  If I DON'T know it already, they I … (30 comments)

local expert: Pukalani Superette - Pukalani Maui Hi 96768 - 12/23/07 07:37 PM
Pukalani Superette is a great little store in upcountry Maui.  It's on Makawao Avenue, at the intersection with the old Haleakala Highway.  Locals know where it is.  If you can't find what you're looking for in this grocery store, you better head down the road to the Pukalani Terrace Center.
This store has the best pupus, if you're hungry and you need a snack RIGHT NOW.  The other day I stopped in with my dad, and we walked out with some fried teriyaki strips and chicken wing drummettes and we ate them in the car!  They make really good local specialties like potato … (8 comments)

local expert: Cloning ourselves on ActiveRain - what's the word? - 11/01/07 05:16 AM

I see that we can join up more than once, and essentially be "cloned" here on ActiveRain.  In my area I see a few people doing this and it doesn't seem to hurt as a way of marketing yourself.  I was just wondering what is the feedback on this practice?  What do the AR gods have to say?
I can see the Localism advantage of being at the top of the stack for more than one town.  Why not be perceived as an expert in two or more areas, especially if they are geographically close, and it's all part of your "territory"?
