maui: August 2024 update from Maui - 1 year after the fires - 08/07/24 07:49 PM
August 2024 update from Maui - 1 year after the firesI thought it would be timely to do an update on the situation on Maui.  I'll send you to my other blog so I don't have to repeat myself.  A lot has changed but a lot still needs to be done, and it's way more that I can say here quickly.
Our tourist industry really took a hit over the past year, with visitor numbers down about 27% they say.  Thankfully those visitors are spending heavily and that helps... thank you!
There's a lot of drama about what's happening and what's not happening, … (13 comments)

maui: Dream Home: Real Estate Opportunities with an Aquatic Twist! - 03/21/24 08:16 PM
I found this short documentary about the koi farm on Oahu to be very interesting.  You see a lot of koi here on Maui as well and they're pretty easy to keep.  It's nice to see they can be easily shipped between islands.

Finding that perfect home is often about discovering a space where your dreams can take shape. But what if your dream home also came with the added delight of having your own private aquatic oasis? Imagine stepping out into your backyard and being greeted not only by lush greenery but also by the serene beauty of a … (10 comments)

maui: The calamonsi fruit is the perfect size for you - 04/30/23 03:13 PM
The calamonsi fruit is the perfect size for youCalamonsi/Calamondin:  These little citrus fruits are just the right size for individual servings... in a cocktail, or on a plate with some fish/seafood.  Native to the Philippines, you'll find them in many Hawai'i gardens, and if you're lucky they bear fruit all year round, like the tree pictured above.  You might also try growing them in your climate, if you bring the potted plant indoors for the winter months.
You can pick them while still green, for a tart flavor, or wait until they ripen to orange for a delicious sweet/sour burst.  They also … (11 comments)

Market stats - Maui County - November 2021
Compliments of First Hawaii Title - Kihei Maui HI
It's still a crazy hot market for sellers here on Maui.  There's just hardly any inventory, and homes and condos are selling fast.  Vacant land has also been seeing a lot of sales since the pandemic started.  Maui is a great place to get away to, and it will continue this way for a while as far as I can tell.  While it's expensive to buy property here, it's worth it!  Maui County includes the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai.

maui: Short term rentals - should they be allowed or not? - 09/05/21 08:33 PM
Short term rentals - should they be allowed or not?
What are your thoughts on short term rentals (STRs) in residential neighborhoods?  We're all familiar with the concept of AirB&B, house sharing and house swapping, but how does it impact each of us?  Are you someone who embraces the concept, and actually partakes as a landlord?  Have you ever stayed in an STR for a few nights or weeks?  Did you have a good or bad experience?
Many cities have now put restrictions in place regarding these short term rental homes, including my island of Maui. It's really complicated here.  In a resort … (13 comments)

maui: Maui's median home price now over $1,000,000 - 06/08/21 07:14 PM
The median price of a single family home on Maui went over $1,000,000 for the first time ever, in May 2021.  It's not much of a surprise since it's been up around $980,000 already a couple of times this year.
Read all about it in the Maui News.
So what does a million dollars buy on Maui these days?  Well here's the 2 most recent sales that match that criteria:

maui: People in Hawaii can go outside without a mask! - 06/03/21 09:26 PM
People in Hawaii can go outside without a mask!
Yay - we have turned a corner and it feels great.  Whether you're vaccinated or not, you can take off the face mask when outdoors, providing it's not a crowded event that is.  Our sunny and breezy weather makes for a perfect case of not needing that extra protection from the Corona virus.
Here's a link to the Maui News update ...
Of course, some will still choose to wear the mask, and that's OK.  I really think the masks will be here to stay and I won't mind using one when the time is … (16 comments)

maui: Are you vaccinated against COVID-19 yet? - 04/12/21 08:48 PM
Are you vaccinated against COVID-19 yet?
If you live on Maui you can now sign up for your vaccinations if you're 16 or older.  Don't wait.  If we all do our part, the sooner we can get back to "normal" again.
I outlined the process my husband and I went through here on Maui, and it was really easy and simple, so there's no excuse. It feels GREAT to be over that hurdle.
Check out my other blog for all the details.
If you're on the fence, just get over it, and get your free vaccines and be happy and healthy.

maui: 65 year olds can now get their Covid vaccine on Maui - 03/13/21 07:51 PM
65 year olds can now get their Covid vaccine on Maui, starting Monday March 15.
On Maui we are moving forward with lots of vaccinations for the oldies and those on the front lines.
This is the Maui Memorial Medical Center which is our main hospital, in Wailuku Maui, where they are giving out the Pfizer shots with an appointment.
My hubby got his first shot last week, as he was able to qualify, and I now have an appointment for my first shot of Pfizer vaccine next week.  It's pretty exciting stuff after being cooped up for a year wondering when things will … (16 comments)

maui: Planning a trip to Maui? Don't take the Hana Highway! - 07/04/20 09:16 PM
Planning a trip to Maui?  Don't take the Hana Highway!
Almost everyone who comes to Maui as a visitor used to be encouraged to take the "road to Hana" for a once in a lifetime experience. It's famous for the 52 or so single lane bridges, stunning vistas, tropical jungle and white knuckle hair-pin curves.  But that was then and this is now...
First of all, you may have to pass through the National Guard checkpoint at Twin Falls, where they'll ask you what your business is.  Are you driving to Hana?  Is it absolutely necessary?  If you're driving a Mustang or Jeep, … (13 comments)

maui: Can you ever get tired of this beach scene at Kuau Maui? - 03/05/20 05:35 PM
Can you ever get tired of this beach scene at Kuau Maui?
It's not the first time, and it won't be the last, for me to show off this beautiful peaceful beach scene in front of Mama's Fish House in Kuau Maui Hawaii.  When we lived just a few houses away from this beach, I would walk to the beach every morning and comb the sand for seashells.  The tidepools are great for dipping in, with no worries about getting swept out to sea.

If you ever get a chance to eat at this award winning restaurant, then you'll have to take … (13 comments)

Colorful tropical ti leaves in the Maui sunshine
What can I say, it's Monday and sometimes a little lightness is required.
These are ti plants, and the leaves are called ti leaves, but not the kind you make a drink from.  The leaves have many uses here in Hawaii and almost every yard will have some growing.  They say it's good luck to plant one at every corner of your house.  You can't really have too many because they are useful for cooking, serving food, decorating, making lei and other crafts, and more.  With a wide variety of colors and sizes, it's … (20 comments)

My top ten 2019 Activerain posts, and what it means.
This post is inspired by Joan Cox's post of a similar theme, which got me to checking out my own statistics of views here at Activerain.  The results are based on number of views.
While it was interesting to scroll through the years, I was quite surprised to see so many posts I completely forgot about, and realize I have a treasure trove of information I could be mining.
Back to topic though, it's no surprise that some common topics are always popular... tropical flowers, restaurants and food.

maui: Grateful for so much good food today and everyday on Maui! - 11/28/19 07:33 PM
Grateful for so much good food today and everyday! Living on Maui is the best!
Living in Hawaii means access to good fresh food every day of the year.  Not only from our own gardens, but also from local shops and farmers markets, and restaurants.

Haliimaile General Store - sashimi appetizer
We usually have something growing and eat our own produce all the time.  These days it's oranges and star fruits from the orchard, and pasture raised beef and wild pork in the freezer.  We have our own egg laying hens, though sometimes I wonder if they aren't pets more than producers!

Video at the Maui Aloha Classic - windsurfing contest Oct 2019
Here's a link to a short video taken at Ho'okipa Beach Park, in Paia Maui.  The PWA Aloha Classic was on hold because the waves were too big and dangerous.  This annual competition pits the best men and women windsurfers in the world.  But despite the lack of contestants battling it out on the waves, the beach scene was colorful and interesting, as it usually is.
Thanks for watching.  I hope you enjoy this small glimpse of life on Maui's north shore, when the waves are pumping!
