moving to maui: Maui County property taxes are due on Feb 20 and Aug 20 - 02/19/17 07:03 PM
Maui County property taxes are due on Feb 20 and Aug 20
Just a reminder that poperty taxes are billed twice a year here on Maui, with February 20 and August 20 being the due dates.  If you have a mortgage it will probably be rolled into your monthly payment.  If not, you should already have the bill.
What are the property tax rates this year?  Take a look at this chart to get an idea.  You'll notice our taxes are pretty low compared to other states and cities, (which may or may not be a good thing).

moving to maui: Wake Up - we're here to see the house. - 04/02/09 01:57 PM
Wake Up - we're here to see the house....
Today I was showing some Paia Maui homes for sale to some new buyers, let's call them John and Sue.  We managed to get into one home on very short notice, the agent gave us the lock box number and said it was OK.
It looked a little like someone might be home... pickup truck in the driveway, junk in the yard.  I thought it was going to be vacant.  So I knocked on the door and got no response.  It was about 11 in the morning.  I opened up the front door … (4 comments)

moving to maui: Maui wind zones - now there's an up to date map - 07/05/08 01:21 PM

Here on Maui we enjoy prevailing Tradewinds out of the northeast.  These warm winds blow fairly consistently almost every day.  It's one of the reasons why windsurfers and kiteboarders love it here, along with the warm ocean water and wave action.  The tradewinds are so consistent that many of us are using this resource to power our homes - by way of wind turbines.  As more and more people are experimenting with "green living", the trend is likely to increase.  If you're thinking about harnessing the wind for your own use, it's nice to know if it … (10 comments)

moving to maui: Got my MAUI garden growing - what's in your garden? - 05/07/08 10:35 AM

Haiku Maui Hawaii - it's a great place to grow things.
We are blessed with an almost perfect climate here in Haiku - and this spring has been one of those years when we get early morning showers to keep everything green and fresh.  It was good timing for a veggie garden, so hubby got the tractor out and made me a nice spot right close to the house this time.
Let's see, what do I have growing now.... lettuce, mesclun, cilantro, basil, dill, Vietnamese coriander, lemongrass, marigolds, cosmos, pole beans, brocolli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, habanero peppers, more kinds of … (19 comments)

moving to maui: Pride of Aloha leaves Hawaii - Norwegian Cruise Lines pulls out another one - 02/12/08 12:27 PM
Pride of Aloha Ships Out       Norwegian Cruise Lines have announced that they will be re-stationing the Pride of Aloha vessel to Asia this summer with Star Cruises.  The Pride of Aloha will be out of service in Hawaii effective May 11 2008.  This will leave only one ship in Hawaii making the inter-island cruise, the larger Pride of America.  Pride of America will spend one night in Maui's Kahului Harbor (shown here) on its weekly cruise.  The company has lost million$ in the past 4 years due to foreign-flagged cruise ships operating in Hawaii and driving down prices.      Some think this change … (4 comments)

moving to maui: Jackson Chameleons on Maui - can you spot them? - 02/10/08 08:31 PM
 Jackson Chameleons
Can you see him... the Jackson?  Sure, it's easy up close, but not so easy unless you know it's there.
These cute reptiles have become established on Maui, mostly in the upcountry area between Makawao and Kula.  They like the cooler elevations and reproduce in the trees and bushes of neighborhood gardens.  This one is a male, with the horns on the front of his head.  They have the cutest little hands and feet that grip the branches while their eyes look in two different directions.  Slow moving and careful, they're really hard to see.
Here's the Jackson again.
Males can get … (13 comments)
