paia: Paia MAUI Hawaii, as seen from the air - 07/22/08 12:36 PM

PAIA MAUI HAWAII - 96779       See the North Shore Maui Map
Here we go again on another inter-island trip, this time we're flying from Maui to the Big Island. This picture was taken from the window of our Aloha Airlines flight on a typical sunny day. Not bad considering it's taken through the plexiglass.  The expanses of green are sugar cane fields which cover a good portion of the slopes of Haleakala, Maui's famous dormant volcano. Maui and Kauai are the last of the Hawaiian islands to still grow sugar cane, and Paia was historically a sugar plantation town.

paia: Maui Street Sign Graffiti - does this happen to you? - 01/12/08 09:43 PM

Maui Street Signs - Sticker Graffiti
Sometimes I like to take pictures of goofy things, like these various street signs around Paia and Haiku on Maui.
People seem to have a lot of time on their hands, and enjoy putting stickers on things.
I have to admit it makes for a laugh once in a while.
Who are these people?  Where do they get those stickers?
I recognize some of them coming from the surfing industry.... we have a lot of surf punks in Paia.

paia: My Hawaiian Cookbook Series - Part 1 - baked Mahi Mahi - 12/13/07 06:19 PM
Mahimahi (Coryphaena hippurus) is commonly known as dolphin (not the mammal), dolphinfish, or dorado, in other places.  It's an open ocean fish found in seas around the world.  When a mahimahi takes the hook, its colors are brilliant blue, silver and yellow.  These fade in a flash when the fish dies. Large schools of mahimahi are common around ocean flotsam and off fish aggregation devices or FAD's.About 80% of the commercial mahimahi caught in Hawaii are by local fisherman using trolling methods.  Hawaii's mahimahi is a highly regarded product which is best eaten when fresh.

When I cook mahimahi I like to bake it in … (19 comments)

paia: Hit and Run Drive-By Shooting on Maui - 11/21/07 01:00 PM

Random MAUI Scenes taken from the car while driving
Okay I admit it's a dramatic title, but this is just a quick post with some drive-by pictures of some Maui scenes.  I always hate to take pics out the car window, but sometimes you get lucky and they're not too bad.  That's a view of the ocean close to Mama's Fish House.
Makawao Town in upcountry Maui has some great old buildings.  And of course, there's always those beautiful rainbows over the sugar cane fields while driving into Paia on the north shore.

Don't worry, I wasn't driving.  Have a great Thanksgiving!  I … (8 comments)

If you're looking for an oceanfront or beachfront home in the neighborhood of Kuau Maui, you're probably a surfer, windsurfer, or kiteboarder.  Maybe even all of the above.  This location is about as good as it gets for the water sports enthusiasts.  If you can't launch from your front yard, then it's just a short walk or drive to a number of excellent spots along the coastline of the north shore.... like Spreckelsville or Ho'okipa Beach Park.Along the shoreline between Kuau Point and Paia town, there are 8 oceanfront homes and 2 residential condos for sale at this time, starting at … (0 comments)
