A little bit of history from Maui....
Kihei Wharf was first built in 1899 by Henry Baldwin, to service his new Kihei Sugar Plantation in the area now known as Kihei. The raw sugar product was shipped out to California for processing, and supplies were brought in here. People started using the wharf for fishing, and small boats would come and go. Plantation housing was built across from the wharf to house the workers from Japan, Portugal, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Polo ponies and family fun for Halloween in Pukalani Maui
As a follow up to a previous post, I promised more pictures from the upcountry Maui polo field. On October 31, 2016 the polo match was moved to the drier venue at the Manduke Baldwin field in Pukalani due to muddy conditions at the Oskie Rice Arena in Makawao.
The event was a benefit for the Children's Cancer Society here on Maui, and was well attended by local residents and visitors. It was a beautiful and sunny day, with a few food vendors set up selling refreshments. A silent auction was underway … (6 comments)

This guy has a great costume all year long, and sometimes it's really hard to see him. These Jackson Chameleons have become established on Maui and they prefer the upcountry region where it's a little cooler, but not too wet.
Maybe you'd also prefer a home in Kula Maui, where it's cooler and not too wet.

October means pumpkin time at Kula Country Farms, in Kula Maui. Stop in for the free tour of their pumpkin patch and pick out your own big ones and small ones for carving and decorating. You can grab a snack and refreshments here because you'll probably stay a while. It's very inviting and there's lots of parking.
Good harvest. Look at the variety of big orange pumpkins and gourds for sale! It's been a good harvest this year and the ground is covered with these fruits of the fall season. White ones, green ones, striped and spotted ones too!

I've been hearing a lot about the Mill House Restaurant at Maui Tropical Plantation, so pulled in the other day while driving by. I wasn't hungry enough to eat but I was curious to see what they have done by way of incorporating some old sugar mill features into their landscape.
What a surprise to see the creative use of some old huge gears and other interesting machinery. How did they ever come up with this? What a great way to preserve a little bit of Maui's history.

Just an update of the Pukalani Terrace Center in Pukalani Maui Hawaii with some pictures to show what's available for shops and services as this convenient Upcountry shopping center.
At the north end closest to the Old Haleakala Highway you've got the recycling and redemption center where you can bring in your bottles and cans for cash, or drop off your carboard, plastic, glass, etc. for recycling.
Also at this end is Ace Hardware and the Bank of Hawaii. You can plug in your electric car here while you do some shopping or banking, and I think it's still free to charge up.
