Tropical flowers on Maui are always a hit
I've been a little lazy about blogging and it's time to change that! I know from seeing the stats that tropical flowers get some eyeballs, especially in the winter months, so here's some eye candy for those of you in the colder climates.
First pic is of orchids growing on a tree, which is pretty easy to do in many parts of the island.
The fragrant gardenia will bloom in the spring and fill the air with it's lovely scent.
These orchids were growing in Lahaina Maui, before the fire event of last year.

My jade vine is flowering for the first time!
We planted this tropical jade vine 2 years ago, just as the pandemic was becoming the big news of the day. It was a skinny little wisp of a vine in a flower pot, wrapped around a stick of bamboo - so frail and delicate that I wondered if it would survive. Of course, in Haiku Maui it's hard NOT to grow anything, so I was confident it would be okay.

Speechless Sunday? Perhaps. Beautiful tropical flower - definitely. All that lovely lush jungle just grows and grows and we don't have to water it or tend it much... just hack it back from time to time. And we are greeted with these delightful blooms every year.
Haiku Maui is about as sustainable as it gets. With plenty of rain, we never have to worry about wild fires or droughts. We can grow food crops all year long. Our air is some of the cleanest air on the planet. The climate crisis has been really easy … (13 comments)

We saw some lovely tropical flowers today on the monthly Realtor Caravan tour. This one property in Maui Ranch Estates was just loaded with hundreds of pots of plants and flowers. Here's just a sample of the colorful blossoms and foliage that we encountered.

I know, I know - more pretty flowers from Maui - it's not the first time I've posted such things. But it's quick and easy and these were just taken 2 days ago while touring homes for sale in Upcountry Maui. They are so big and beautiful and believe it or not they get good "Google juice".

These gigantic flowers really make a statement - spider lilies stand out! These tropical flowers bloom in the spring/summer season here in Hawaii.
A white spider lily flower in Haiku Maui
White is the most common color, but they also come in a purplish red shade which is called the Queen Emma spider lily.
Look how big this flower is! I had to get my hand in the shot for reference.

It was a beautiful sunny day on Saturday for the annual event that brings out the whole Haiku community.
It keeps getting bigger each year and it was nice to see many more restaurants participating with lots of food trucks. The variety of flowers and plants is amazing.
A lot of things are put together by the kids at Haiku Elementary School which is just next door.
I came for the food and to take pictures, and of course, talk story with old friends.

Tie-dye pink hibiscus changes color throughout the day
We love to grow colorful tropical flowers in Haiku Maui and this pink tie-dye variety is really unusual. As you know, hibiscus flowers bloom for one day and they stay fresh on or off the plant. In the morning this one is a bright solid pink, but by the end of the day it has faded to a stripey tie-dye effect.
It's pretty and I haven't seen others like this, though my husband bought it at a local nursery. It's now got a permanent home in the garden where it can … (19 comments)

Harvesting some wild Haiku Maui honey for Christmas
We were blessed to have some honey bees move into an old shed and build their hive here on our Haiku Maui farm. They have been very busy because there was a huge amount of honey combs inside when we took a quick peek. Luckily a friend and neighbor who has his own hives suggested he could remove the queen bee and the colony to his nearby location. He even offered to leave us with the honey since he already has plenty.
