water: Two hurricanes have come and gone here on Maui, 2018 update - 09/14/18 05:01 PM
Two hurricanes have come and gone here on Maui and we have been very lucky to have no damages at our home.  In each case they downgraded to a Tropical Storm, which is less severe than a hurricane but still comes with some extreme weather.

Plywood on the windows, ready for strong winds in Haiku Maui
When you live off the grid like us, you're kind of prepared at all times:
- not connected to the public power or water so no worries about outages - good supply of food on hand since it's a long haul to town on any day - … (14 comments)

water: Weather the storms with an off-grid home on Maui - 08/28/18 06:34 PM
Survive a tropical storm or hurricane with an off-grid home on Maui - and come out smiling.
Disclaimer - it's not about building materials, but more about lifestyle.
During this past Hurricane Lane event that happened in Hawaii in August, it was a good feeling knowing we were completely prepared in so many ways.  Strong winds knocked down trees, which knocked down power lines, causing loss of electricity for thousands of homes. In at least one location a water line was busted when the roadway collapsed, resulting in no water service to a number of homes in Haiku.  Power and water loss are … (3 comments)

- Water delivery - works in a pinch if you have somewhere to hold it
- Rainwater harvesting - a simple and effective … (6 comments)

But what happens when all that becomes unreliable?  Look no further than places like Flint Michigan, or Lake Powell to see that we can't keep on like this.  Shows like Unplugged Nation are letting people know that there are alternatives to what … (12 comments)
