colorado: "Hide and Seek" with a moose - 07/01/15 07:24 AM
"Hide and Seek" with a Moose
First of all, I would never get out of the car and "seek"  a moose- they can be canterkerous and are best  left alone.  This time of year the cows might have calves and they are especially dangerous when protecting their young.
Yesterday, I was driving down Pipsissewa, in the Village of Red Feather and spotted a huge bull moose! It was raining, but I had to stop and try to get a photo.
Then he moved behind a small tree....trying to hide?
"I can still see you!"....
He knew I was there, I just wanted to see those beautiful antlers!  Come … (19 comments)

colorado: Happy Colorado Day - 05/14/09 04:47 PM
Hello Friends, I've been on a little trip to the Western Slope of Colorado. I went with my Mom(79) to see her sister (84) - There was so many beautiful places between here and there - if we had stopped for every photo op -- well, we would still be on our way there!
About 100 miles west of Denver, we stopped at a rest stop. Snow was still on the ground!  Seeing the flags  blowing in the wind in the beautiful Colorado blue sky was spectacular.  One mountain in this range is the Mountain of the Holy Cross with an … (21 comments)

colorado: WRONG TURN turns into FUN - 12/11/08 05:41 AM

  Wrong Turn, Turns into fun.
My daughter, her friend and our two grandchildren were supposed to come by my office; from there we were going to the Craft Fair at the Greening of Red Feather. (Grandpa was going to stay home, watch the dogs and the football game).
I waited and waited for them to come and then the call came. They were stuck in the snow on Kinnikinnik!
I left the office to go find them, and see if my car could push them out.
There are few paved roads in the Village … (11 comments)

colorado: How Red Feather Lakes got its name. - 12/10/08 07:25 AM
How did Red Feather Lakes get its name?
The story as I remember reading it goes something like this: In the late 1920's, the area that is now known as Red Feather Lakes, was designated as wetlands.  Smart developers who saw the beauty all around them decided to make Red Feather Lakes a resort area. They began digging a series of ditches, and lakes.  Jake Mitchell had first diverted water from Upper North Pine in 1888 to what is now Hiawatha Lake.
This small town was sparsely inhabited with hard working, industrious and visionary mountain folks.  There was a general store, a … (4 comments)

colorado: New Colorado legislation regarding water wells: So you have an unregistered well – now what do you do? - 12/09/08 11:12 AM
Effective January 1, 2009, The Division of Water Resources must receive a well transfer form for all small capacity wells or domestic exempt wells that are sold (or transferred) in any real estate transaction. All transferred water rights need to be reported, except those water rights represented by stock in a ditch company.
House Bill 08-1014 was passed by the Colorado General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Ritter and will assist the Division in more accurate recordkeeping  regarding well ownership.  Current information is necessary for the State to notify well owners of any health, safety, water right or stewardship … (8 comments)

colorado: A Holiday Tradition: The Greening of Red Feather and Christmas trees - 12/01/08 02:19 AM
The Annual Greening of Red Feather, in Red Feather Lakes, CO.
Kicking off the Holiday Season, with arts and crafts, over 35 vendors will display their wares on December 6th and 7th at the annual Greening of Red Feather Lakes in the high country of Northern Colorado.
Pottery, cutlery, wood crafts, carvings, photography, jewelry, hand- crafted Christmas items, paintings, home-baked goodies, Christmas wreaths and Homemade Soap.  I remember buying several bars of this soap a few years back.  There are so many wonderful scents - "Wood Smoke" was one of my favorites.
In the Library there will be a children's craft … (4 comments)

colorado: The Pot Belly Deli and Bar - 11/23/08 05:34 AM
For generations, the Historic Pot Belly Deli and Bar has been a favorite with locals and tourists alike.
The little pot belly stove was an original caboose stove from a Union Pacific caboose, and the huge stone fireplace in the back dining room helps create that warm ambiance for group get togethers. A great place to meet your friends and play a game of pool, get a good meal, or sit out on the deck and enjoy the wonderful mountain views.
A popular watering hole, the bar features state of the art sound system, two flat screen TVs, pool tables and darts. Sit down … (2 comments)

colorado: Remind me why I'm here ! :-) - 11/18/08 08:33 AM
Ok, sometimes I get a little crazy.  After living here for 12 years, and being in the Real Estate Business for awhile, I started wondering... what is it about the Red Feather Lakes area that would make people want to live here?
Why would someone want to move here? Build here?  I hate to say this, but the honest answer was,"I don't know".
I can already hear the cries of indignation "Love it or leave it", but I DO love it: my question was "Why?"
I started to panic, thinking if I didn't know why I wanted to live here, how … (13 comments)
