meg ross: Will S&P’s downgrade affect mortgage rates or the Arlington housing market?
- 08/09/11 05:26 AM
Could Standard & Poor’s downgrade of U.S. debt and mortgage agencies Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae impact mortgage rates or the Arlington housing market? While the stock markets are roiling, mortgage rates (which generally track 10-year Treasury yields) dropped to their lowest level of the year yesterday. Homeowners with fixed-rate mortgages won’t see an impact. But if you have an adjustable rate or are in the market for a new mortgage for a home purchase, analysts say you could see a slight rise in rates over the next six months. However, analysts note that a hit to consumer confidence could affect (0 comments)

D.C.-Arlington Top Real Estate Market to Watch in 2011 The Washington, D.C. metro area - including Arlington - was just ranked number one in the Top 10 Real Estate Markets to Watch in 2011 by Inman News. The rankings were based on local data including home sales prices and volume, foreclosure rate, the job market, area demographics and other forecasts. Our metro area was one of the few housing markets to see year-over-year gains in home prices and continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. These factors, along with a low number of Arlington homes for (1 comments)
meg ross: Will mortgages cost more in the future for Arlington home buyers?
- 03/06/11 03:12 PM
Will mortgages cost more in the future for Arlington home buyers? If you are thinking about buying a home in Arlington or refinancing your mortgage, you should read two articles from Friday's New York Times: "A Plan to Phase Out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac" and "Without Loan Giants, 30-Year Mortgage May Fade Away." Both articles suggest that proposed changes to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could increase borrowing costs and limit financing choices. Who are Fannie and Freddie? They are quasi-governmental organizations that provide a secondary market for home loans by guaranteeing mortgages from the lenders who originate them –allowing (2 comments)
meg ross: I’m a 2010 Angie’s List Super Service Award Winner
- 02/07/11 12:50 PM
I was just informed that I’ve been awarded the 2010 Angie’s List® Super Service Award. I’m proud to receive this award because it’s about providing great customer service. I’d like to thank all of the people I’ve worked with who thought enough of me to rate me so highly on Angie’s List. Angie’s List is a membership-based ratings website that offers reports and reviews about service companies. It’s sort of a cross between Yelp and Consumer’s Checkbook. I like using it to find local service providers because Angie’s list checks the reports before they are posted to make sure they are (4 comments)
A story in today’s Washington Post about rising area rents reinforces what I have been telling my clients who are real estate investors for the past six months. If you’ve been thinking about investing in Arlington, VA, real estate, now could be a great time to buy a rental property. 3 Reasons Why Now is a Good Time to Invest in Arlington Real Estate 1. Low mortgage rates that are starting to rise. Rates, while still at historical lows, have been creeping back up from last month’s record lows. 2. Good value in home prices in a real estate market (1 comments)
Arlington VA mortgage rates drop to 1951 levels Mortgage rates hit another record low this week with the average 30-year fixed-rate conventional loan dropping to 4.19%*. That’s the lowest rate since April 1951 when television was black and white, a new car cost $1,500 and you could buy a new house for $9,100! I don’t know if I’d want to go back to a time when turn signals were an “option” on cars, but I’ll take that low mortgage rate. According to this week’s weekly mortgage survey by Freddie Mac, the second-largest U.S. mortgage finance company, mortgage rates have gone (2 comments)

meg ross: Buying A Home? Resist The Urge To Splurge
- 06/05/10 02:12 AM
New rules for mortgage lenders that started this week make it more likely that a second check of your credit will occur right before closing. That means if you are buying a home you need to resist the urge to splurge on new things for your new home … until after you’ve closed on the loan. While I’ve always told my clients not to make a major purchase like a new car after applying for a mortgage loan, now you’ll have to make sure you keep your credit cards firmly in your wallet or purse before you close on your home.
