living in greater hartford: "Take Me Out To The Ball Game..." - 01/27/11 03:52 AM
Wait! Not Fenway Park! Not Yankee Stadium! Take Me To Vintage Baseball At Colt Meadows!
Last summer, my husband and I saw our first Vintage Baseball games and we had a blast. We attended on Boost Hartford Day and saw Billy Barnie's Blue Boys play The Charter Oaks of Hartford according to 1860's rules (no gloves) and the Hartford Senator's play the Springfield Wheelmen according to 1880's rules. We brought our lawn chairs, refreshments, and enjoyed the day at Colt Meadows. Food and refreshments were available at the vintage concession stand - soda pop, hot dogs, and more. Best of all, admission … (2 comments)

living in greater hartford: Rocky Hill Single Family Homes Sales Activity 2003-2010 - 01/11/11 10:36 AM
The number of closed sales, and median and average sales prices in Rocky Hill have increased for single family homes in 2010 over 2009 while the average days on market decreased in 2010 versus 2009! As we saw with the Wethersfield single family home market statistics, the First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit incentivized first time home buyers to buy their first homes which then enabled existing home buyers to "move up" and buy larger, more expensive homes at near historic low-interest rates.
Historical Snapshot of Rocky Hill Sales Activity as of 12/31/2010
Rocky Hill is a desirable community in the Greater Hartford area. If … (2 comments)

living in greater hartford: Rocky Hill Single Family Homes Market Activity as of 12/31/2010 - 01/11/11 10:33 AM
It is not uncommon for the number of new and active listings to decrease during the holidays. As with Rocky Hill condos, the average days on market and the percentage of listings with price reductions increased after June, 2010, the expiration of the First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit (for most buyers). However, the supply time for current inventory (homes on the market) decreased from a high of 12.2 month at the end of April to 6.1 months at the end of December. At first blush a reduction in the supply time may seem in contradiction with an increasing average days on market. However, the … (0 comments)

2010 Hartford Festival of Light Continues
My last stop this evening was at Bushnell Towers, a condominium complex across from Bushnell Park. Since I was so close to the park I decided to drive by on my way home. To my delight they were rehearsing the artistic light show for tomorrow's Festival of Light celebration, "Lights, Skating, Santa Winter Festivities" at Bushnell Park.
Tomorrow's program features theatrical light projections by Marc Herring Group. The artistic light show will include projections of historic Hartford scenes on the buildings and trees surrounding the park. And I drove by just in time to … (0 comments)

living in greater hartford: O'Christmas Tree Where Art Thou - 12/10/10 02:37 AM

Tucked away among the farms of South Glastonbury is a hidden gem - a family farm, the Cavanna Farm - where you can cut down your Christmas Tree.
There are fields of beautiful firs and spruces for nearly every ceiling height. When you find your perfect tree, just shout out, and someone will be right there with the chain saw and tractor to cart the tree to your vehicle.

Next to the "hut" is a display of beautiful wreaths for sale! Ribbon included!
If you haven't bought your Christmas Tree yet, don't worry, the Cavanna Farm has plenty of trees left, … (0 comments)

living in greater hartford: 2010 Holiday Tour of the People's House - 12/05/10 02:59 AM

A prominent industrialist, George C. F. Williams, built the Georgian Revival style residence in 1909 at 990 Prospect Avenue in Hartford CT's West-End. In 1943 the State of Connecticut decided that the Governor should have a "special" house, much like the President has the White House. The State acquired the home in 1943, renovated it, and the first Governor occupied the home sometime in 1945.

During the early 1990′s, the first lady of then Gov. Lowell Wiecher, started an annual tradition - a holiday open house. The Governor invites the public to tour the festively decorated first floor of the residence each year in early December.
Local merchants and organizations donate the … (2 comments)
