lee county: OPELIKA LOVE BIRDS - a 70th anniversary celebration - 01/29/12 02:57 AM
I had the most delightful visit this week with long-time Opelika residents, Jack and Betty Walton. After seventy years together, the Opelika Observer deemed it newsworthy, and asked me to do the story. Throughout our conversation, I couldn't help but reflect on the most evident and enduring qualities that create a strong relationship and prosperous community legacy. It all begins with caring about each other. I am grateful for amazing folks that are the neighbors in Opelika... Let me introduce you to Betty and Jack, and their story that was published in the January 27th issue:

lee county: AREA'S BEST HOMES_902 Floral St Opelika AL _Featured Property For Sale - 01/01/12 12:46 PM
This AIRPLANE BUNGALOW home is a design that grew out of the Craftsman movement in the early part of the 20th century. The Craftsman movement developed from the English Arts and Crafts Movement that left a distinct architectural legacy, that has withstood the test of time for its historic value and visual appeal.
This particular style is characterized by the cupola effect of the second floor that rests like a cockpit over the two wings of the main level.

lee county: Opelika Business Community - TRANSFORMATIONS LIFE CENTER - 10/27/11 04:31 AM
[First published in the OPELIKA OBSERVER 10-21-11 issue ]

Just as fall began making its cooling, color-changing appearance, a big, bold mandala (a sanskrit work meaning "circle") appeared in a shop window on Avenue A, introducing Transformations Life Center to the Opelika business community. In art, mandalas suggest a focal point through repeated designs, concentric squares and circles and/or geometric patterns, traditionally illustrating an indistinguishable wholeness, sometimes representing an entire world or universe. They engage the world of symbolism and often evoke contemplation that can guide one on a transformative … (2 comments)

lee county: SEEING STARS - Celebrate the Fourth of July in Lee County - 07/01/11 02:44 AM

If my memory serves me incorrectly, the 4th of July is the holiday when we take the kids out to cut down a flagpole and bring it home to decorate. Sometimes we are so distracted with the marketing and entertaining aspect of holidays, that we overlook the stories of blood, sweat, tears and lives that were expended for the sake of justice and freedom. A single document, written by Thomas Jefferson and named the Declaration of Independence, was signed, sealed and delivered on July 4th, 1776, officially declaring America’s independence from the royal rule of England. The United States of … (6 comments)

lee county: HELOC HELP FOR HOMEBUYERS - Bridging the gap & avoiding mortgage insurance - 06/18/11 02:48 AM
When I began selling homes in Lee County (at the turn of the century :-) I met Barry Jones, a mortgage broker, who currently manages the local office of  STARKEY MORTGAGE. Over the years, through thick and thin (and thinner!), he has been my number one "go to" consultant on all things related to home loans and getting qualified. To this day, I continue to be supported in my business with his expertise, knowledge, troubleshooting approaches, and consistent, excellent results. Education packs a power punch in the way he operates his business. He stays on top of the ever-shifting and complex … (8 comments)

lee county: Marks of Achievement - LOCAL RESOURCE Good for Business - 06/03/11 02:43 PM

By Mara Hawks Opelika Observer
Every day, thousands of Lee County residents hold a miracle in their hand. We call it as a cell phone, but less than 100 years ago, the original phone phenomenon was referred to as a miracle. Telephone lines that had initially boasted a 100-foot conduit, now reached thousands of miles across the continent. It was experienced as a miracle on many levels, opening banks of silence that put the growth of commerce and communities on a track that the railroads could not. Discovery and invention made its mark in history, driven on the road of … (4 comments)

lee county: AFTER THE TORNADOES - A Stand For Loving Thy Neighbor - 05/11/11 01:07 AM
In response to our neighbors, following the disastrous tornadoes, a few Jeter School second graders teamed up to work a lemonade stand last Saturday on 4th Avenue in Opelika, donating every penny of the proceeds to relief funds. Passersby appeared to be donating generously for a cup of cool refreshment in the 90-degree heat, all too aware of the devastation that our Alabama neighbors are facing.

lee county: AROUND SOUND - Fun With Google Calendar - 02/07/11 03:06 PM
got entirely sidetracked this evening, playing with Google Calendar, and creating a music & theatre Events Calendar for my local town of Auburn Alabama.
Now I need to re-trace my steps to figure out what I did exactly, but it was surprisingly fun!  Google spells out all of the steps. I always struggle with these things, so I can assure you that, even if you feel like you're all un-teched thumbs, you will smile at what you can do with this calendar :-)

and, like magic, it got into my sidebar... Truly, what would a HOME be … (13 comments)

lee county: House Hunting Roommates - When Pets Are People Too! - 01/30/11 12:52 AM
When helping Buyers find a new home, I've learned how important it is to consider the needs of each family member, especially the dogs! Depending on their size and vitality, these roommates seem to prefer wood flooring and plenty of yard room. Trees are a big bonus! ALL of them require plenty of streaming sunshine, and windows for "watching." These Buyers wanted to begin their home search with a view of a DREAM home, so they could carry the dream into their "starter" spot, and are now super-motivated to get started!
