As we all thought, it was just a matter of time before real estate property rates went up again.  The new,increased rates are to be applied for the taxation year starting July 1st 2011.

My County Council has discussed the possibility of reducing the existing property tax home owner's exemption to $200,000, down from $300,000. Obviously, this is meant to increase county revenue.
Even at the $200,000 level, this exemptio is the by far the highest in the State of Hawaii. It is only $80,000 in Oahu and Ka'uai. Thus, our county officials think that it is fair, particularly since real estate values have dropped significantly in the past few years.
At the same time, the Council is discussing the criteria to qualify for such exemption, in an effort to make them more stringent. Currently, … (0 comments)

How much is property tax on Maui? This is the most common question that I receive from the people that are interested in investing on Maui.
Unlike other states, the value of a property is assessed by Maui County appraisers every year, based on a sophisticated formula that takes into consideration the sales in the area during that period of time.
Once the value is determined, a taxpayer is taxed a certain number of dollars for every thousand dollars of the assessed value, for that type of property.
