july 4th: July 4th shows the grit and determination of the American people

When I think of July 4th, I think of American grit and determination. The quest for independence was permeated with average people doing above average things. One of my favorite stories happens many years after America gained its independence, but in this short story, you can see that same grit and determination that built a great nation. Have a wonderful July 4th, and please give a few thoughtful moments to the cost of your freedom.

On July 4, 1917, General John J. Pershing marched American dough-boys into Paris in the first public display of American troops as the United States officially entered WWI. The American troops continued their march through Paris until they reached the tomb of Marquise de Lafayette.
As the Parisians looked on, Colonel Charles Stanton stopped at Lafayette's tomb and declared, "Lafayette, we are here." General Pershing announced that the Americans were there to return the favor. july 4th: Happy July 4th - Let Freedom Ring!

For the past decade, my wife and I have had a tradition of watching "The Patriot" on July 4th. I never get tired of watching the portrayal of sacrifice and courage that won this country its freedom. The movie is placed in the southern colonies. Growing up, I didn't learn much about the war beyond Virginia. I'm not sure I ever heard about the war in the southern colonies. The movie challenged me to do a little research to fill in the empty spaces in my knowledge of US history.
