activerain: GOOG drop-kicking old browsers, will not support IE7 - 06/05/11 05:17 PM
GOOG DUMPS IE7 How Timely!
I just updated to Internet Explorer 9 tonight, since TMLS notified me today that TEMPO 5 and CoreLogic/MarketLinks fell into line and supported it. And then I saw this article that GOOG is going to dump support for older browsers like IE7.
And I know people who are using IE7 because IE8 is still just too new and untested. And a great deal of the less-developed world is still using IE6. Go GOOG. Sell Chrome to them....
And, "select/copy/paste" is dysfunctional on ActiveRain. More worriesome than AR kerfuffles is that my IDX vender, IDXBroker doesn't yet support … (16 comments)

activerain: ActiveRain Foibles: So you miss your AR Leaderboard? Try this... - 04/26/11 01:27 AM
Yesterday's and Friday's server kerfuffles ruffled a few AR Members' feathers...
One item I saw mentioned a couple of times was that the Leaderboard was down.  Can't check AR Rank. from my AR Home Page.  Oh dear!
"How do I see who passed me?"  Well, once we get past "Curiosity Killed the Cat," we have an alternative for the inquisitive AR Member.
At the top right of any AR page, in the header strip, between "Channels" and "My Home," you will see "States."
This does not refer to States of Confusion, Despair, or Disgust.  It refers to the 50 US States, and adds Canadian … (19 comments)

activerain: Now Playing: There's G-O-L-D in them there Righteous Pointeroos! - 04/09/11 05:08 PM
Who dat wit dem Pointeroos?? Another insightful installment of "If You Ain't Havin' Fun, You're Bloggin' Wrong!!"
YessirreeeBob, Gold!  A bounty to be earned every month by mining a rich vein of ActiveRain Righteous Pointeroos!
"Righteous Pointeroos? "  Yes.  As in "Birth Right" and "Divine" and "Oh, fer cryin' out loud, don't take this point thingie too seriously." But...  But...  All of a sudden, it got serious.  Very serious, indeed.  Moolah is the essence of "serious."  You can now make money like picking up aluminum cans. Cha-Ching!
What is the cash value of a Righteous Pointeroo? Last week, it was mere Braggin' Rights.
Now, it … (16 comments)

activerain: Can the "Evil Empire," MSFT, Actually be More Ethical than the "Do No Evil" Empire, GOOG? - 03/17/11 04:28 PM
.
You saw it first, here, on ActiveRain!
Some people say it is so.  That would be the folks at The Ethisphere Institute.  (Uh...  Try saying "The Ethisphere Institute" fast, three times.  "Theethithhth." )
Yep.  MSFT is perched on the 2011 list of the 110 Most Ethical Companies in the world.  GOOG, on the other hand, is not.  How can that be?  GOOG gives stuff away for F-R-E-E, making it the darling of the privacy-adverse amongst us.  And MSFT must have gone all Miss Goody Two Shoes after Y2K when Mr. Bill first pondered how many Bill-ions it would take to ELEVATE! himself to a Supra … (7 comments)

activerain: "Buyers are Liars?" Well, then, DON'T WORK WITH THEM! - 03/10/11 03:24 PM
In two stints with a couple of classic "Tin Men-style" home improvement companies that taught high-pressure closing tactics, one of the common rationalizations for being a hard-core and unprincipled boilerroom-type closer was the old saw, "All Buyers are Liars, and Sellers are too."
I didn't last long, and I am fine with that. That attitude was at odds with my general optimistic and idealistic nature. I look for the good in people, and really don't have much trouble finding good in almost everyone I meet. And, I think pinning the blame on prospective clientele for my failure to engage, rather than … (11 comments)

activerain: Keller Williams Family Reunion 2011: High Points and One Liners... - 02/24/11 03:57 PM
. . . Having Mo Anderson visit and speak at the Carolinas Region Awards Reception has to be #1.

Having lunch with Amanda Simpson, Elizabeth Arduain, Shawna Green, Vickie Slade, Rich, Doug, and Elizabeth was great.  Getting around a table with people who know how to enjoy life makes convention food taste great.
Everything is relative to your perspective.  Some folks were bummed about the weather.  But Tuesday night, at 51 degrees, there were kids in the hotel pool having a blast.  I mentioned it seemed cool to a nice lady, and she replied, "We're from Calgary, so this … (2 comments)

Had a great chat with Steven at the ActiveRain exhibit booth at Keller Williams Family Reunion 2011.

These guys are high energy, having a good time and infectious.  What's not to like?
And it is a great looking display that demonstrates "Community" very well.  But I didn't get down on my hands and knees to see if they had me in a thumbnail photo.  Maybe later.  If they promise to help me up again...

activerain: Addicted to ActiveRain? ME? Sweetie, You Have It All Wrong!! - 01/31/11 10:44 AM
Me?  Addicted to ActiveRain?  You have it all wrong....
Just because...
I have cravings, yearnings, needs and desires,
and separation anxieties,
and healthy obsessions,
and irresistible urges,
and technicolor visions
and I mutter and mumble in my sleep
(When I CAN sleep through fragments of witty and enlightening blogographia coursing through my restless consciousness)...
Just because...
You come out in the morning and see me at my desk with "QWERTY" and "ASDFG" and "ZXCVB" on my left cheek from passing out with my face on the keyboard,
You see that detached and distant stare that says, "This will make a great blog..." when I … (15 comments)

activerain: Are you a "Right Click, Copy, Paste" Blogger? Some Recommended Reading..... - 01/16/11 03:35 PM
If you tend to gather up information, content, images etc, from the internet to fill in your Activerain blogspaces, or to present as your comments, I suggest you read up on the activities of a firm named "Righthaven,LLC."
©
Righthaven, LLC, has been suing people, lots of people, for copyright infringement.  And, they have been collecting.  The whole story presents a significant amount of food for thought regarding how safe you may be from suit, if you regularly indulge a hankering for someone else's stuff to pass on as your own.

activerain: How to Deal with Slow Loading ActiveRain Pages? Here's One Strategy - 01/09/11 03:38 PM
I have seen several blog posts bemoaning slow loading AR pages this evening.I empathize, as that has been the case for a few days here.
I like to read thirty or forty blogs a day, and converse with at least a few AR members on their blogs.  Page loads in the 15 to 25 second range take some of the fun out of that.  And, it isn't fun at all when a page finally loads, and I realize I clicked on something I already read after a 20 second page load.
Enter the wonder of "Tabbed Browsing!"  Multi-Tab cruising around ActiveRain.  … (18 comments)

activerain: Catchy Blog Titles: Does "31 Day Blog Challenge, Day 25" Ring the Bell with Consumers? - 01/03/11 03:24 PM
Just wondering.  Sort of a "Point of Order" thing.
Is a variation of a "31 Day Challenge" Title a Catchy ActiveRain Blog Title?
The Challenges are great.  Really.  Whatever floats someone's boat to motivate them to step up to the keyboard daily.  Consistency is fabulous. But, we are often counseled to offer titles that will engage the reader.Las Month, it was not unusual to see the AR Blogroll populated with many Blog Challenge titles.
A couple of days, I saw at least 5 or 6 blogs in a row that were indistinguishable from each other, because they all had the same title. But, how can I … (15 comments)

activerain: REBLOG OF LENN HARLEY: COPYRIGHT INFORMATION FOR ACTIVERAIN MEMBERS! - 09/30/10 04:12 AM
I don't think I need twenty five words to introduce a reblog, in appreciation of Lenn Harley's ongoing efforts to enlighten or warn ActiveRainers about copyright infringement on the internet.  This intro is fluff.
The Reblogged post on the other hand is NOT fluff.  Read and Learn.

COPYRIGHT INFORMATION FOR ACTIVERAIN MEMBERS!
COPYRIGHT TIME.  Several posts in the past few days about copyright and some pretty risky advice contained in some, made me think that it's time to do the copyright thing again.

Reblogged from Maureen's "Yikes Yahoo..." post.
How much will we eagerly offer up to the Gods of Free, and their minions and lackeys, before we realize that nothing is really free, even though "nothing aint worth nothing but it's free?"
"Free at last?"  Maybe?

activerain: REBLOG OF AMY JONES: Reblogging is cool...Impersonation is not. - 08/06/10 08:55 AM
Here's a great topic raised by Amy Jones:  Rebloggers and how to handle attribution to the Original ACTIVERAIN Blogger, and whether allowing comments on a Reblog is kosher.
I think it is quite OK to allow comments on a Reblog.  I think it is made more difficult by AR members who comment on a Reblog as if it is the original posting of the blog.
I think Rebloggers should clearly label a Reblog similar to how I label my Reblogs.  In the title I have clearly labeled:
REBLOG OF AMY JONES:  Reblogging is cool....Impersonation is not."
I think it reasonable for … (8 comments)

activerain: Staying up to speed on AR: Four "Must Subscribe, Must Read" ActiveRain Blogs - 07/31/10 02:00 AM
Another post today wherein an ACTIVERain member is disgusted because he was surprised at the change in Rainmaker policy at ACTIVERain.  There have been quite a few of them, with "outrage" and "dismay" being common themes.
I can understand Jim's pique.  To some extent.  And, to some extent, he is at fault.
Without getting into "fault" too deeply, I would propose that ACTIVERain is a business, and an evolving business, at that.  "Evolving" as any business must to survive and thrive.  That means changes.
Most "Free" stuff evolves.  Lots of "Lifetime Free" stuff fails to evolve, and goes the way of … (17 comments)

activerain: Foursquare Revisited: A Practical Use by a Reconstructed Realtor Skeptic! - 07/30/10 02:55 PM
So I dissed Foursquare, both on Bart Wilson's Blog, and my ActiveRain Reblog of Bart's post.  I'm backing up a little bit now.
I have found a practical use for Foursquare.  Foursquare is my little friend, my Accountabilty Partner.
I am the Mayor of Harris Teeter at Crescent Commons in Cary, NC, and it was fun getting there.  So, I think I will keep the position.  Gotta check in regularly.  Gotta go to HT to checkin, to do it right.
HT has one of the best salad bars in Cary, certainly the best salad bar within walking distance of Keller Williams Cary Office.  And, I … (7 comments)

activerain: REBLOG MAUREEN MCCABE: Does "Re-Blog" allow you to share content on your... - 07/28/10 02:12 AM
Maureen is always thinking, a diversion that takes a great deal of stamina in my experience.  What is the appropriate use of Reblogging on ActiveRain?
Does the permitting of Reblogging by the original blogger give license to the Reblogger to use the content in any way, anywhere, they see fit?   I think not.  I think "copyright" still applies to the content once you get past the gates of AR, for sure.
Is all "viral" good "viral?"  Not necessarily, and I don't think being allowed to reblog also delegates to me the authority to plaster someone else's content all over just because I can … (8 comments)

activerain: Plagiarism and Content Theft for Fun and Profit! Announcing a new"Must Join" ActiveRain Group! - 03/13/10 12:46 AM
Potzrebie! All of a sudden it seemed SO timely. Overdue, even!
New ActiveRain group:  Plagiarism and Content Theft for Fun and Profit
With the popularity of the topic of content theft and plagiarism on ActiveRain, i.e., the enjoyment of a good cut/paste/wink/wink for some members, and the pique of other members about it all, it just seemed to be time for an AR Group.
This group is an all-purpose clearing house for ill-gotten content, and thoughts and opinions of ill-getting it. Right here!
Join! Drop in and share your stolen goods, and in one place on AR, you can absorb the derision of … (34 comments)

activerain: Using someone else's content, on AR or elsewhere? Are you doing it right? Or wrong? - 02/13/10 12:03 AM
Here's an example of SarahGray Lamm using other folks' photography.
Look at the bottom of the post, where she attributes the source and the licensing.  And the photos link to the source.  That's doing it right.
And it is a great blog on the City of Durham, too.  Read it!
Here's a story of someone doing it wrong, with Lenn Harley's content. (Smack my forehead in disbelief!)
Someone who thought they were clever with their copyright violations, but they really are not smart enough to work in real estate.
Would you want someone that dull representing you in a transaction?  Or mowing your grass, … (18 comments)
