raleigh: Cary, NC Real Estate, MacGregor West, Premium custom Homes - 07/05/07 01:50 PM
A few years after MacGregor Downs was a mature community, the adjoining community, MacGregor West was developed.  Again the focus was on custom upscale homes to appeal to professionals who needed a great location with convenient access to Cary and Raleigh, North Carolina.

MacGregor West was an immediate success and has continued to be very popular.  Homes are attractive, on reasonable lots in view of current new construction standards, and highly landscaped.  As in any upscale community, you can expect to invest $500,000 to "whatever" in a MacGregor West home.

raleigh: Cary NC Real Estate, Trees, Trees, and more Trees in our neighborhoods! - 07/05/07 01:20 AM
People decry the removal of trees from parcels of land that are being developed for new homes.  Too often, they are all too accurate.
The pressure in the Wake County, North Carolina to develop all land within a reasonable distance from Cary or Raleigh or the Research Triangle Park has pressed builders and developers to offer smaller and smaller lots.  But Buyers are demanding larger homes.  Those 6,000 square foot homes on 1/5 acre lots leave precious little room for most species of desirable large shade trees.
I fear that we will never see homeowners planting and nurturing willow oaks to their full … (4 comments)

raleigh: July 4th, and a couple of stories I'll never forget. - 07/03/07 03:15 PM
1.
We were still living in Pennsylvania and I always had the week of July 4th for vacation.  That year, about 20 years ago, we decided to drive to Atlanta and visit my sister.
We were coming home, and stopped in a motel for the night.  On July 4th, we were in a restaurant for breakfast and reading the July 4th issue of the newspaper.  The front page featured story was the uplifting story of a woman and her daughter and the hardships they had overcome while emigrating from Korea to the United States of America.  I can't remember the details, but … (3 comments)

raleigh: Raleigh, NC, Dorothea Dix land. DIX306 Proposed and Bid by Raleigh City Leaders - 06/14/07 12:13 PM
I mentioned DIX306 in February with hopes that this project could become a reality.  A world clas destination park on 306 acres just across from the Raleigh skyline!
Is it one step closer?  Raleigh is making a bid, backed by some development bucks and a fair amount of public support.
It is all over the local news today.  What a relief from the Paris Hilton sludgefest!
This gorgeous property with 120 foot wide sprawling oak trees is such an opportunity for open space for public enjoyment for perpetuity.
Don't worry....I'll keep you posted.

raleigh: 95 degrees is NOT HOT! - 06/08/07 03:48 PM
Everyone commented on the heat today.
I'm not all that impressed.  It only hit 95.  I was in Cary, NC a few years before I figured out what real heat is.
I tell folks, "You'll know it's hot out when..."
"... you go out to get your morning paper and the driveway is radiating so much heat you go back in for shoes to protect your feet.  And the sun hasn't dawned yet."
"Or, if you don't get the Raleigh N&O before dawn, and it spontaneously combusts in the driveway in the plastic wrapper."
"... you get up at 5:30 and it is already 78 degrees out.  It might get hot today."
"...you … (17 comments)

raleigh: Home improvement and hiring contractors in North Carolina - 06/05/07 12:20 AM
So, you have decided it is time to improve your home, maybe adding a porch or finishing off the space over the garage into a family room.
Good Luck!
You can be "lucky" if you are in step with a few basics in hiring home improvement contractors.
1.  Licensing.  If the project will run over $30,000, a North Carolina general contractor will need to be licensed.  Or you can serve as your own general contractor, if you are comfortable directing and scheduling subcontractors, and gathering materials.  Check out licensed general contractors at the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors.  If you meet someone … (0 comments)

Leasable Square feet increased in three classes, with only Flex Space adding no new square feet from the end of Q4/2006 through Q1/2007.
Vacancy Percentages were up in three classes, with only Office Vacancy declining slightly.  The lower Office Vacancy was spurred by demand for Class C space, with a … (0 comments)

raleigh: Wake County, NC Real Estate, "Do I need an agent to buy a new construction home?" - 05/29/07 03:46 PM
We hear it all the time:
"Why do I need an agent to buy a new construction home?"  It's a very appropriate question in Wake County, North Carolina.  Half of our housing inventory is new construction.
So, why should you use an agent when you can just go in and buy from the Builder's representative.  The term "Builder's representative" should be one tip-off.  That person is there to represent the Builder, to act in the Builder's interest, and to serve the Builder.
Where do you fit into that picture?  With the playing field favoring the Builder, you can level it by engaging a … (0 comments)

raleigh: Cary, NC Real Estate, Measuring up. Tale of the Tape: ZOUNDS! That house is GROWING! - 05/19/07 02:10 PM
My chum Rama talked to me yesterday and invited me on a measurement of his latest listing this morning.
Cute 1 1/2 story home with a porch and nice dining room bay window.  Great central location in Cary, NC.  Walk to school and Starbucks.
We did a little homework and determined that Wake County thought the place had 1221 square feet.
And when it last sold several years ago, it was listed at 1375 square feet.
Checked the tax rolls and the folks in Raleigh show a "Fully Finished Attic."  Good, we had no permitting issues.  We currently have an epidemic of homes hitting the market in North … (2 comments)
