The Hickory Treasured Trees Program was established for the purpose of preservation and identification of trees in the city.
By creating citizen awareness of the importance of mature trees, the Treasured Trees Program promotes preservation of these significant trees from topping, damage and removal. 

Criteria for Treasured Trees Nomination
SPECIMEN- Size: Nominated tree should be of distinctive size for its species, beauty or age as compared to other individual species in the city.

On average, more than 65 percent of Hickory solid waste customers recycle, which exceeds the North Carolina average, which is 57 percent.
 
Hickory customers have blue recycling bins and these items are acceptable to put in the bins:
newspapers
magazines
catalogs
phone books
cooking oil bottles
glass (green, clear and brown)
plastic (#1 and #2 found on bottom of containers),
plastic bottles (milk and juice jugs, soda bottles, detergent bottles),
aluminum cans
tin cans
