social media: What the HECK is Scoville? - 05/11/11 01:50 PM
A little site just hit the mainstream radar called Scoville. Actually it’s http://www.goscoville.com/ You might be seeing invites from some of your friends in your inbox.
What is it?  Why would I want to join?  It’s not another Second Life is it?

First of all – it’s NOT Second Life.  Details are still coming but this is what their site says.
Scoville started with a simple idea. Every Tuesday we’d share with our friends the best places we’d been to in the past week. Only awesome places had to be shared. And that’s how every Tuesday we’d get a list of awesome places from … (8 comments)

social media: The Best Tool in your Toolbox - 05/05/10 03:08 AM
Social Media is all about making connections, reinforcing those connections, and enhancing those connections.  Want to know the best tool in any social media marketer’s toolbox?
It starts with a great big  G…
No, it’s not Google (although that might come in a close second).  It’s being “genuine”.  Really!  One of the worst things tools is Automation (in my opinion).  One crystal clear way to be genuine is to personalize your one on one messages.  Nothing grabs the recipients attention more than something that shows you took the time to know a little more about them before firing off that message.

social media: Engaged - 10/09/09 02:36 AM

I'm engaged - hopefully you are as well.
I was at REBarCamp – Lynchburg and the theme for the day was Engagement.
I gave a rare presentation to start the day. That’s a little weird. If you know me you know how strongly I think a REBarCamp is all about the conversation and NOT about the presentation.
I kept it short and sweet. I looked at this as a way to set the mental stage of the participants. You can tell someone how to engage others but what I hoped to do is show them real life examples of people … (6 comments)

social media: How do you respond? - 09/15/09 06:21 AM
One of the greatest values of Social Media is that you are able to easily put out content on many different channels.  For instance, you’ll find me on my blog, on Twitter, on Facebook (on mypersonal profile and multiple Business Pages), on Youtube, on Flickr, on FriendFeed,Posterous, Tumblr and on and on (and on) …

Social Media isn’t about directing someone to one particular venue or site – if anything it’s about engaging others on the platform of their choice – not yours.
Read that again slowly.  It’s their choice – not yours.  Take this post as an example.  You may choose to comment directly on my blog post.  You may … (29 comments)

social media: How to Text while Driving - 08/17/09 05:53 AM
DON'T !! Plain and simple, just don’t do it. In California it’s illegal and has been since January 1, 2009.
Illegal, yet every single day I see numerous drivers willingly breaking the law. Yesterday it was a middle aged woman who had both arms thru the steering wheel, blackberry against the speedo, on the freeway!
The following video is part of an half hour long program being shown to new drivers in the U.K. It's graphic in nature and worth every single moment of it's 4 minutes and 15 seconds.

It’s a professionally made short movie using actors but that … (11 comments)

social media: Is John Harper a Genius? - 05/22/09 08:02 AM
Meet John Harper.

He’s just one of the many Harpers of the Harper Mees team. (there’s quite a few of them)
John is a full time Real Estate Agent and is responsible for leading the team direction in it’s internet and technology.  On top of that, he is an Instructor and Speaker.  He’s got his hands full.  You might imagine, even being as smart as John is, it’s hard to keep on top of all the emerging technology, especially that concerning Social Media.
So what did John Harper do? (here’s where the Genius part comes in )
He reached out … (2 comments)

social media: 2 things that don’t make a Social Media Guru - 05/20/09 04:47 AM
And 2 things that do.
#1 – Your Title Is it just me?  No matter what particular title you use after your name, Social Media Guru or Social Media Ninja , or just the simple “Expert ” they all make me cringe.  The hairs literally go up on the back of my neck.  Was there a class I missed giving you that designation or did you live abroad for years studying Social Media with your fellow Shaolin monks eating only wafers while surfing the interwebs?
Social Media is so new, so rapidly changing, the best any of us could hope for … (14 comments)

social media: 2,663 ignored me / 336,894 never heard me - 04/06/09 04:48 AM
Social Reach - it’s the number of people you have a theoretical chance at getting your message to in using social media.
It’s numerical value is derived by the number of Friends, Connections and Followers you have and how many Friends, Connections and Followers they have.  That raw number grows exponentially!

Maybe that’s why the Sales & Marketing Types are drawn to Social Media. They are literally blinded by that potential.
Unfortunately, so often they get it wrong. They blast into Social Media, follow and friend everyone, compute their massive Social Reach potential, then start blasting out broadcast (spam) messages.

social media: Want to play the REBarCamp Game? - 04/02/09 03:34 AM

Today is the day of REBarCampLA and I am going to miss it!  I didn’t want to miss it.  I would have much preferred to be there, connecting with all my online friends and making new ones. For me it was a matter of economics.  I’m close enough to cover the 370 miles in a matter of hours.  I know there are people flying from all over the country to be there!  I was there at the inception for the first one.  REBarCampSF08  and it rocked!  Oh well.

social media: Are you building a wall? - 03/18/09 09:05 AM
I’ve always felt Social Media should attract and engage new connections and enhance existing ones.  I went in search the other day (online) for a few new contacts.  I searched in the usual places; Google, ActiveRain, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.  While I added a few it also crystallized the cold stark reality that sometimes what we do and how we do it actually hurts our doing business.
Here’s just a few examples:
If someone reaches out and requests to connect to you on a social network and you reply with “Do I know you?!?!?!?!?!” You’re building a wall. In social networking … (87 comments)

social media: If the Media is using Social Media... - 01/27/09 02:22 AM

Will they find you?  Make no mistake about it, they are looking.
Yesterday I saw a tweet by my friend Nick.  He mentioned that

And yes they did…

If you don’t know, Nick is the guy behind http://RailLife.com a supreme example of hyperlocal blogging.
Here’s Nick, Lori and the cameraman who wouldn’t lend me his camera  : (

Moral of the Story: The media is actively using Social Media to source their stories.  If you want to be quoted, if you want to be found, you know where you have to be!

social media: ...in a Meaningful Way - 01/14/09 01:52 AM

"It’s not just the flow of information," Shirley said, "What it has to do with is having mechanisms where you are interacting with people who are outside of the office in a meaningful way. And I’ve got to look for every opportunity to do that–ways that aren’t scripted, ways that aren’t controlled, ways where, you know, people aren’t just complimenting you or standing up when you enter into a room, ways of staying grounded."

She sounds like any number of experienced bloggers … (10 comments)

social media: NOW you can search for Names on Twitter - 12/29/08 02:00 AM

Image via Wikipedia You probably didn’t notice but Twitter added a name search recently.
That means I can search by first name, last name, or complete name.  It used to be you could only search by username.  That would be fine if you were looking for me, @MikeMueller, but not so fine if you were searching for someone like Daniel Rothamel who goes by @RealEstateZebra.
It seems that it ranks the results based on the number of Followers. That may be fine for certain instances but I’d also like to be able to sort by updates, or other attributes.

social media: Have you Googled Your Name? - 12/16/08 05:26 AM

I typically don’t.   I have little reason too.  You see, I have setup Google Alerts for virtually any mention of my name.  When Google finds my name mentioned (or this blog) they send me an instant email.
But with Google returning over 1.3 million results for Mike Mueller could Google maybe have missed one?
I think they did. I was just scrolling down the list in preparing for a Social Media Presentation tomorrow and noticed this headline:
Mike Mueller Signs with Fidelity National Title – Jobwire It was published back in late October.  I checked my Google Alert records and … (18 comments)

And Facebook and other Social Media sites to start the conversation with new potential clients.
The local news even found him and featured him!

He shared the story on his post
News Ain’t Just Broken On TV Any More Good Job @NRVLiving !

Does it really work?
He says:  "It really does! I know my colleagues think I’m just playing around on the computer, but when people write in - in 140 characters or less, mind you - and and ask you to list their home, why would you NOT make social media an important part of … (13 comments)

social media: Where the Growth is... - 11/21/08 02:40 AM

What’s the fastest growing Social Media website?
Is it ActiveRain?  Facebook?  LinkedIn?  Flickr? How about Twitter?
Here’s a couple of interesting charts showing the number of Daily Unique Visitors for the last 12 months for each.
ActiveRain
Facebook
LinkedIn
Flickr
Twitter

For actual numbers of Daily Unique Visitors Facebook wins by a mile.
For explosive growth it’s hard to ague with Twitter.

social media: Facebook delivers a nice surprise! - 11/17/08 01:14 AM
What a nice surprise!
With my birthday was yesterday, (November 16th) and m y wife surprised me with a weekend getaway to Capitola .  It’s a tiny little coastal town just south of Santa Cruz, CA . a few hours drive away with small little shops, great restaurants, and for this weekend, absolutely beautiful weather! We strolled the beach, we shopped the shops, we had a great italian dinner in a restaurant so small they have only 6 tables (Caruso’s ).  With no reservations, we were happy to have to wait an hour in the wine bar next door. … (16 comments)

social media: Avoiding Disaster: How Not to Use Social Media - 09/30/08 06:08 AM
That was the title for one of my favorite panels at BlogWorld.
It was a star studded panel consisting of  Jason Falls, Lee LeFever, Patrick O’Keefe, & Darren Rowse.
I captured some video, took some stills, asked a question at the Mic, and talked to the panelists after the event.
I didn’t take notes (other than the mental kind) as there was plenty of Twittering going on.
I just came across a great recap of the event written by Barbara Rozgonyi.  I’ve set up a special folder in my Google Feed Reader for all things tagged … (7 comments)

social media: What's your Social Media BoxScore? - 09/11/08 04:34 AM
Is there a Social Media Boxscore?
If there was, what would it look like?
Baseball has it’s Boxscore. You know… Runs, Hits and Errors.

* technically speaking, this is a Line Score.
Social Media isn’t about keeping track.
It’s not about how many points, how many followers. how many friends, or how many links you have. It’s about making connections.
It’s about relationships.  It’s not about the numbers.
OK, now to get off the Soapbox… But what would a Social Media Boxscore look like?  What numbers would it track?  What platforms would it include?
To the real estate professional I … (12 comments)
