The Willard Munger State Trail is a network of multiple-use trails that connects Hinckley, Minnesota with Duluth, Minnesota. Depending upon the season, the interconnected trails offer hiking, bicycling, inline skating and snowmobiling. The 63 mile Hinckley to Duluth trail is the longest paved trail of its kind in the world. It passes through the towns of Finlayson, Rutledge, Willow River, Sturgeon Lake, Moose Lake, Barnum, Mahtowa and Carlton. The network of trails also connects the town of Carlton with Minnesota Highway 23, just south of Jay Cooke State Park, via the Alex Laveau Memorial Trail. Lake Superior is the largest and cleanest of the Great Lakes. But Lake Superior faces constant threats from pollution and other challenges. The Save Lake Superior Association, organized in 1969, is dedicated to preserving and protecting Lake Superior. The group was originally formed to protest the dumping of taconite tailings into Lake Superior by Reserve Mining company. The effects of the recent sharp rise in gasoline prices were readily apparent yesterday. On Interstate 35 headed north out of the Twin Cities, traffic was unusually light for the kickoff of Memorial Day weekend. Other than a fair amount of late afternoon congestion close to I-694 in the Lino Lakes area, it was obvious that at least some are staying home this weekend. On past Memorial Day weekends, traffic has been much more congested heading towards Duluth and the Boundary Waters area. This year, things were eerily different. KARE-11 television station in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area hosts Ron Schara's "Minnesota Bound" program on Saturday and Sunday evenings each week. The Duluth, Minnesota area got blasted by some heavy-duty stormy spring weather today. Local news stations reported sixty-plus mile per hour winds in Duluth harbor, with twelve-foot waves striking the shore. Duluth didn't receive as much snow as expected so far, but winds have been unexpectedly strong. People were advised to stay indoors. Large pieces of ice were picked up by the gale-force winds and did damage to cars and building windows. The wet, heavy snow has made driving difficult and visibility was minimal in some areas. Sometime in November, one of my favorite Duluth restaurants, Bennett's on The Lake, disappeared! In its place is Midi, in the same wonderful location (on Fitger's lower level), with a panoramic view of Lake Superior plus a brighter decor and open floor plan. The menu is a bit different, but didn't disappoint. There are the usual steak, fish and seafood offerings, plus some innovative Mediterranean dishes. Judging from the name Midi, I was expecting French cuisine, and was surprised to see a menu insert featuring German dishes, including Wurst and Rouladen.
