minneapolis: Twin Cities Catholic Chorale Brings Glorious Music to Saint Paul, Minnesota - 12/10/07 10:34 AM
Many visitors to the Church of Saint Agnes on a Sunday morning think of the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale as an organization working to preserve the treasury of sacred music for orchestra and full choir.  For over three decades, the Chorale has regaled listeners with performances of the greatest orchestral Masses of the eighteenth and nineteenth century.
Founded by its original director, the late Monsignor Richard Schuler, the Chorale has performed a 10 a.m. High Mass (in Latin) since 1974.  Instrumentalists participating in the accompanying orchestra are professional musicians from the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area, including members of the Minnesota Orchestra, … (0 comments)

minneapolis: Showing Homes During a Blizzard: Who Says December Isn't a Great Month for Real Estate Sales? - 12/01/07 11:26 AM
Are prospective buyers still writing offers in the midst of today's troubled nationwide real estate market?
The answer here in Minnesota is a resounding "Yes"!

Today, I had a showing request on one of the most unlikely showing days of the year.  We're experiencing our first blizzard of the year-end winter season here in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metro area, with temperatures in the teens, high winds and snowfalls between 4 and 8 inches so far!
The couple who requested a showing met me at a lakeshore home northeast of the Twin Cities late this morning.  The driving on Interstate 35 … (15 comments)

minneapolis: Luxury Properties Market Report: Top 10% of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Real Estate Market for the Past Six Months - 11/06/07 09:56 AM
The Minneapolis Area Association of REALTORS® (MAAR) reports the top ten per cent bracket among closed home sales in the Twin Cities metro area for the last six months to be $450,000 and up.  In other words, a closed sale in excess of $450,000 ranks among the top ten per cent of residential closed sales in our market for the past six months.
The closed sales statistics were compiled for the period between April 1, 2007 and September 30, 2007.  The $450,000 top-bracket figure compares with a figure of $490,000 for the previous six months ending March 31, 2007.
The most recent closed sales figure … (6 comments)

minneapolis: Vikings Defeat Chargers: Sometimes a “Rookie” Outperforms a Seasoned Pro - 11/04/07 10:04 AM
SportsNetwork.com predicted the outcome of today's San Diego vs. Minnesota football game would be Chargers 24, Vikings 10.  But the final score was Minnesota Vikings 35, San Diego Chargers 17
Oh well, the experts were only off by four touchdowns and a field goal or so...

Minnesota Vikings Rookie Adrian Peterson set an NFL single-game rushing record during today's game, midway through his rookie season with the Vikings.
The San Diego Chargers were obviously the media darlings on CBS Sports when the game began.  San Diego was the hands-down favorite, with network commentators Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf repeatedly reminding viewers that Minnesota … (6 comments)

minneapolis: Interview With HUD Enforcement Division Spokesman - HUD Monitoring the Internet for Fair Housing Violations - 10/17/07 11:52 AM
After several weeks of telephone tag and email exchanges, I was granted a telephone interview today with Bryan Greene, HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Enforcement Division in Washington, D.C.
I had earlier forwarded by email a list of questions for HUD that were submitted by Active Rain members in mid-September.  The HUD official had the opportunity to look these over and therefore he was prepared for my questions in advance.
Since so many of the questions from AR members were anecdotal, Bryan suggested that all questions related to specific incidents or how to deal with a specific request from a consumer should be directed to the … (41 comments)

minneapolis: "Retrospectives" Art Exhibit at the Nash Gallery, University of Minnesota Oct. 9 - Nov. 8 - 10/15/07 06:53 PM

Two members of the University of Minnesota Art Department are currently exhibiting their works at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery on the West Bank.  Artists Guy Baldwin and Gary Hallman present "Retrospectives" through November 9, 2007 in the Regis Center for Art, located at 405 21st Avenue South, in Minneapolis.
Guy Baldwin is renowned for his kinetic art, including motorized fish with moving fins and tails.  I'm privileged to have one of Guy's kinetic "fish" on display in my office and it is one of my most treasured artworks!  Baldwin's style has been described as "playful" and remarkably innovative.

Among the works on … (17 comments)

minneapolis: Foreclosures Forcing Homeowners' Associations Into Financial Trouble - 10/11/07 03:42 PM
Our local ABC Television affiliate in Minneapolis-Saint Paul just aired a news spot about a homeowners' association which is teetering on the brink of insolvency.
The news story referenced a 24-unit townhome development in the metro area with eleven foreclosure properties in the development.  The association is currently losing over two thousand dollars a month in association fees that cannot be recovered, at least for now.  In order to stay afloat, those residents who are not in foreclosure are picking up the slack.
The president of the homeonwers' association commented that the association is unable to keep up with repair or maintenance costs and may have … (28 comments)

minneapolis: Doing Business in More Than One State? Share Your Challenges and Experiences! - 09/03/07 12:07 PM
I know there are Active Rain members who conduct business in multiple states.  Perhaps your main office is close to a state border like ours (the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area is next door to the Wisconsin border).  Do you sell primary homes in one state and second homes or recreational properties in another?  Or do you have a license in a "sun belt" state and sell to second home buyers from your home service area?  Do you belong to more than one MLS or Board?  Which state do you consider your primary market?
Do you find it a challenge to keep up with licensing and continuing education requirements in multiple states?  Do the states where you … (6 comments)

minneapolis: Minnesota Flea Markets are Great Places to Find Antiques & Home Decor Accents! - 08/26/07 07:07 AM
A lot of smart shoppers have discovered that "Flea Markets" are a fabulous place to locate accents and unique items for home decorating.  A home stager friend of mine buys a substantial amount of such items at flea markets and she saves money doing so.
The Minnesota countryside is dotted with flea market sites to discover and enjoy.  Check out Collectors.org for a long list of Minnesota Flea Markets.  Personally, I've found some great deals on antiques at places like Osowski's Orchard Fun Market in Monticello.  I bought a large Red Wing crock there, which I use for storing wood next to … (0 comments)
