Actually, Sunday will be the full moon.
From Gates Pass this evening, though, you would have been hard put to tell the difference. The setting sun painted the tops of the mountains in the foreground with its deepest color of the day.
You really do have to come visit this place sometime this winter. It's magical. It really is.

~ Sonoran Desert Sunset ~
It never fails. The parking lot on the summit of Gates Pass Road is full one-half hour before sunset. The glow of the setting sun brings a chorus of "Ooohs" and "Aahhs" from the tourists. Their sunset is the little one you see there on the right.
The sun's glow fades, and the sky turns gray. People make their way to their cars and head on down the hill, lights on, glad to have experienced a Tucson sunset.

gates pass: The Sky's On Fire

Sunset this evening found me at one of Tucson's most picturesque spots.
Gates Pass in the Tucson Mountains is a spectacular place, especially at sunset.
The city lies far below to the east, and to the west, the Avra Valley extends to the horizon.
Stone buildings and walls fit the landscape. Access is very easy by car, and the parking lot (off Gates Pass Road) is generous. I've taken some of my favorite photos from this vantage point.
It's beautiful. It's quiet, even when people gather at sunset. The atmosphere is almost one of reverence. It's a place I frequent … (14 comments)

Sunset tonight (June 9, 2009) was spectacular, first with yellows, then shades of orange and pink. As the sun sank below the horizon, pinks deepened to impossible reds, and then it was over for another twenty four hours.
Couples who had come to Gates Pass to watch the spectacle sat a little while longer, enjoying the moment with each other. Two by two, they found their way off the mountain and back to the parking lot at the foot of the pass. Lights came on, engines started up, and they left.

gates pass: Location, Location, Location! Gate's Pass at Sunset, Tucson, Arizona

There's something about a spectacular sunset that draws us. Each evening, just before sunset, people from all over the world gather less than a mile from my home in the Tucson Mountains to witness some of the most glorious sunsets on the planet. The spot is called Gate's Pass.
Here's a closeup of the setting sun between the saguaro cacti on a September evening.
And another of the gathering storm from the perspective of the ramada at Gate's Pass, overlooking the valley floor below.

gates pass: There's No Place Like Home in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert

Getting away for ten days does a lot to recharge the batteries, freshen one's outlook, and to minimize the problems that seemed overwhelming just a week ago.
We were in a beautiful area of God's creation--southeastern Oklahoma in the springtime.
Still, the rain across the desert in spring paints the valley floor twenty shades of green, and that rainbow in the distance, (viewed here from Gates Pass Road at the summit of the pass,) made me know why we picked this corner of God's creation to put down roots.

gates pass: Belt and Suspenders: Pima County, AZ Road Signs

I had to stop and take a photo. The irony of this is downright funny!
I doubt that ice has formed on the roadway known in Tucson, AZ as Gates Pass Road, at least not since the Jurassic era. Maybe not even then.
But there it is. A sign (not one that folds closed, either) warning you to Watch For Ice.\
But look down there to the right. See the fire hydrant? That's the funny part.
Because of the high summer temperatures, kids have been known to crack the hydrant to soak themselves in a cooling spray of water.

People from all over the world converge each evening at sunset to watch the lovely approach of night.
Drive west on Speedway, cross under Interstate 10, and within a few short miles you'll be surrounded by a forest of saguaro cacti, the predominant trees of the Arizona-Sonoran Desert.
Wend your way past ancient granite outcroppings, climbing ever higher, and you'll come to the summit named Gates Pass, in the heart of Tucson Mountain Park.
You'll find plenty of parking if you get there half an hour before sunset. The parking fills up fast in the last half hour.
