house swapping: Is House Swapping the Way to Go?

A recent blog post spoke about how house swapping is the way to go when you want to travel the world. I've never done this, but have always been curious. I would love to travel the world without having to spend a fortune on hotels.
But, here's my issue with house swapping. I have cats. I know that people often ask to have the roomers take care of the animals. It's just, how can you trust someone else around your animals? Is it safe? What if you get a bad swapper.
