The Supreme court may soon decide if New York state and city rent regulation laws (rent control/ rent stabilization) are constitutional. An Upper West Side couple who own a Beaux-Arts brownstone at 32 West 76th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue have been in federal court during the past few years attempting to overturn the rent regulations protecting their tenants. One of those tenants pays about $1,000 a month and has lived in the one-bedroom unit since 1976. supreme court: Speechless Sunday: Supreme Court Building - Lower Manhattan - 01/31/10 05:15 AM

I received notice that I had to report to NY Supreme Court last week or receive a $1000 fine. It turns out I didn't have to report for jury duty, I only had to report to find out if I'm qualified. I'm qualified and will be hearing from them in 3 to 4 months. I served 5 years ago. 6 months after I served they changed the qualification from every 4 years to every 6 years. According to the county clerk I am qualified this year because the 6 year exemption was passed after I served.
