I am particularly a fan of their 3 year old venture into CSA farming (Community Supported Agriculture).  Not only do the Langan’s strive to nourish my body with their superior … (2 comments)

oh: Winter in Milan, Ohio - 02/05/14 01:16 AM
Winter in Milan Ohio
When most of us are holed up at home in front of the fireplace, there are others who are out enjoying the beauty of the season.
I am grateful to Lori Lewis that she needed her special cup o’ joe from The Coffee Station in Milan Square.  She took a moment to share some of her observations.
This quaint little village is the home of Thomas A. Edison and was a major shipping port in the 1800’s.

Milan is a special place to visit in every season.  And by the way, we say it My-lan not … (0 comments)

Children and adults alike delight in the welcome change during the short, cold days of winter.
I think we all have a vision in our heads of what a beautiful display looks like….. Candles aglow in the windows, draping garland on the fence, a red bow wreath on the front door, colored lights brightening the darkness.   But, so … (0 comments)

Where do you buy your spring and summer veggies?

I try to hit the local Farmer’s markets, but, more often than not, I buy from the local IGA or Meijer’s store.

When I take the time to read the labels, I see that a majority come from out of state or even out of the country.  I wonder how far in advance these veggies were picked and how they were grown and preserved for transport.

I had read about a … (0 comments)

Holiday Happenings at the Huron Soup Kitchen

I have to start by saying the name of this post is somewhat of a misnomer.

A common definition of a Soup Kitchen is:  an establishment dispensing minimum dietary essentials (such as soup and bread) to the needy.

While we do make soup,……. sometime,…….. it is the exception, rather than the rule.
We serve such a wide variety of foods, that if you come to eat and go home hungry,…. it … (5 comments)

Pay It Forward Through Volunteering

I believe that most people are good and generous with a desire to help others in some way.  I also believe that a lot of people just don’t know where to find opportunities to direct their energies.

Our local paper, the Sandusky Register, posts a section on ways to volunteer every Sunday's newspaper.

Some of the opportunities include:
*Drivers are needed to transport people to their medical appointments on an as needed basis
*Serve lunch and bus tables in a senior facility
*Help with an afterschool program for children doing homework, … (40 comments)

It’s getting to be that time of year again.

Cooler temperatures herald the colorful display of the autumn leaves, blooming mums, pumpkins and the wonderful outdoors of Fall.

It’s a welcome respite for most from the heat of the summer.

But, what to do when those pretty leaves begin to fall?
Of course you can compost some of them, bag some of them and then what?
