Legend has it that a Native American princess with the name of Abita is where Abita Springs got its name, but the truth of the matter is that the word Abita has its origins in the Choctaw Indian language. The Tammany Trace is a scenic recreational paved trail with a parallel equestrian trail with recreational facilities along its path. St. Tammany Parish acquired the railroad right-of-way from the Illinois Railroad in 1992 and the Tammany Trace became the first and only Louisiana railroad to become part of the National Rail to Trail Network.
