Haugan is about five miles from the Idaho border. The town was named for H. G. Haugan, land commissioner and comptroller for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Haugan was established and maintained as a pusher station for trains ascending the Coeur d'Alene Mountain grade. Savenac has an interesting past; we invite you to take our self-guided tour and learn how a honeymoon on horseback resulted in one of the largest and most beautiful nurseries in the West. haugen: Mineral County Median Home Prices Remain Strong Through 2007

There has been a lot of negative national press about the real estate market recently. Reports of increased foreclosures and falling home prices seem to headline every news segment. What these national stories don't report is that many markets remain steady or are even growing slightly. So is the case with Mineral County and much of Western Montana. During 2007, median home prices in the county increased significantly. The area of Alberton saw the median home sales price rise to $168,500, a 9.2% increase from 2006. There was a story on the front page of the Missoulian (http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2007/11/04/news/local/news02.txt) just before Thanksgiving announcing that Mineral County was No. 1 hottest county for land in the United States! This story reported on the growth spurt that Mineral County is experiencing and how Mineral County was 1st in the nation in September for hits on a popular website Landwatch.com. In September, there were 28 properties in Mineral County on the website, a relatively sparse number compared to second-place Nicholas County of West Virginia and third-place Calhoun County of Florida. The Clark Fork Chronicle and Mineral County Chamber of Commerce recently set up an online encyclopedia that allows many different authors to work together on articles. According to the Chronicle, "With the first members of the baby boomer generation retiring and moving to areas offering nearby national forests and national parks, we are likely to see a large influx of newcomers. Many may be moving from cities to rural residential areas for the first time.
