mineral county: Mineral County's Mining History - 1897 Along Quartz & McFarland Creeks - 08/30/08 07:27 AM
Mineral County was home to one of the largest gold rushes in the state. It's hard to believe when you visit many of the drainages now that they were once home to thousands of people. An interesting news clip that I just came across from the Mineral County Historical Society is from the Mineral Independent (from the Missoulian 20 years earlier) August 31, 1933. It references Quartz Creek and its tributaries where we currently have properties listing - and mining claims!
I can just picture visiting an old miner's cabin and walking in and seeing their "pay" - a bowl full … (2 comments)

mineral county: Breathtaking Views from Hoo Doo Pass in Mineral County - 08/28/08 07:07 AM
Earlier this summer we took a drive to Hoo Doo Pass near Superior, Montana. This is an amazing drive with breathtaking views from every side.
On the way you drive along a local favorite of fly fishermen - Trout Creek - which is rich in Trout, of course. The road leads you up a wide canyon. Along the way, you pass the trailhead for Heart Lake - a great day hiking trail.
Hoo Doo Pass is at the Montana / Idaho border and has a beautiful alpine feeling. There is also a trailhead for Hoo Doo Lake which I am told … (2 comments)

mineral county: Anthropologists to Perform a Dig in the China Gulch Area of Cedar Creek in Superior this Week! - 06/25/08 02:49 AM
Anthropologists from the University of Montana, in conjunction with the US Forest Service, will be visiting Superior this week and performing an archeological dig in the China Gulch area of Cedar Creek. They were also here in 1995 and discovered several things, including the U-shaped hearth in this photo.
Cedar Creek has a colorful history to say the least. In 1869, a Frenchman named Louis Barrette discovered gold and established Louiseville, named after his wife. By 1870, Louiseville was a booming mining town, but within 3 years it would be completely abandoned.
The Chinese who were forced out of Idaho moved into the … (0 comments)

It is moderate to difficult in terrain with the first 1000 feet at 10% grade and the remaining hike at 15-20% grade.

mineral county: Mineral County Median Home Prices Remain Strong Through 2007 - 01/16/08 01:45 PM
There has been a lot of negative national press about the real estate market recently. Reports of increased foreclosures and falling home prices seem to headline every news segment. What these national stories don't report is that many markets remain steady or are even growing slightly. So is the case with Mineral County and much of Western Montana.
During 2007, median home prices in the county increased significantly. The area of Alberton saw the median home sales price rise to $168,500, a 9.2% increase from 2006. The area from Fish Creek through Superior saw a median home price of $148,000, a … (0 comments)

mineral county: Mineral County Montana - No. 1 HOTTEST County for Land in the United States! - 01/16/08 12:15 PM
There was a story on the front page of the Missoulian (http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2007/11/04/news/local/news02.txt) just before Thanksgiving announcing that Mineral County was No. 1 hottest county for land in the United States! This story reported on the growth spurt that Mineral County is experiencing and how Mineral County was 1st in the nation in September for hits on a popular website Landwatch.com.
In September, there were 28 properties in Mineral County on the website, a relatively sparse number compared to second-place Nicholas County of West Virginia and third-place Calhoun County of Florida. But on the average, more people checked out Mineral County's 28 listings than … (0 comments)

The Clark Fork Chronicle and Mineral County Chamber of Commerce recently set up an online encyclopedia that allows many different authors to work together on articles.
According to the Chronicle, "With the first members of the baby boomer generation retiring and moving to areas offering nearby national forests and national parks, we are likely to see a large influx of newcomers. Many may be moving from cities to rural residential areas for the first time. It may take them a while to become familiar with all the quirks of Montana living--noxious weeds, open range, bears in the backyard, and wildfire. It … (0 comments)

mineral county: Missoula Lake - A Hidden Getaway in the Lolo National Forest above Superior Montana - 10/02/07 03:26 PM

We spent this past weekend at Missoula Lake above Superior with my parents. Missoula Lake is a beautiful alpine lake full of cutthroat and rainbow trout, although they are difficult to catch. It's only a short walk from the road and there are great camping spots above. When we were there, the first winter snows had already hit and there was about 1/2" of snow on the ground and a dusting on the trees. The drive to the lake was beautiful as well with the trees just changing color and seeing bright bursts of yellow and small red bushes on the … (4 comments)
