In a fantastic show of community support, the Palos Verdes High School Booster Club raised $120,000 at their annual fund-raising event "Catch the Wave."
                                                  
Sandy Fisler, who co-chaired the funder "‘Catch a Wave,'" said, "It was a magic evening for the Palos Verdes High School community, but our sold-out event's net proceeds raised more than $120,000 with a record $60,000 from event sponsorship."All the funds," she added, "will benefit academics, arts and athletics at PV High."The support we've received from the community during difficult economic times is really astounding," Fisler said

As reported in today's Peninsula News:
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and the Palos Verdes Faculty Association have reached a tentative contract agreement, reducing the number of instructional days from 180 to 176 for the 2010-11 school year. The move will reduce the salaries of all PVFA employees, saving about 25 teaching positions and keeping class sizes manageable. A joint announcement was made on Tuesday.

To help reduce a $4-million deficit because of the ongoing state budget crisis, the Board of Education in March approved preliminary layoff notices for more than 59 full-time equivalent teaching positions. Of those … (0 comments)

The Palos Verdes School District, as well as Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach led the way in South Bay High School results for the State of California High School Exit Exam.  The Exit Exam must be taken by all high school students and passed before they can receive their high school diplomas. The exam is given in the Sophomore year, and if not passed, studens have many more opportunities to take the exam before the end of their senior year.

palos verdes schools: New Parcel Tax for Palos Verdes Schools Appears to Have Passed - 06/24/09 03:38 PM
With all mail-in votes now tallied, Meaure V which will create a new tax of $165 per property appears to have exceeded the required 2/3 majority, with 68.6% of ballots cast approving the measure. The only ballots left to be counted are those that were turned in on Tuesday to Palos Verdes City Hall.  These ballots are not expected to affect the final outcome.

Donald Trump has deposited $400,000 as a deposit on the $4 million purchase of an 8.5 acre of land owned by the Palos Verdes Unified School District. This land purchase is part of a 2004 settlement of a lawsuit between Trump and the School District which called for Trump to lease the land for $1million a year and then to purchase the land. The money, however, can only be used by the School District for Capital Improvements, by law, nad will not be available to meet the large projected budget deficits due to State budget Issues.

The schools of the Palos Verdes Unified School District again led the South Bay in the State Standardized API Test scores released yesterday. All of the schools in the district scored in the top 10% of the state results, with Cornerstone Elementary achieving the top score of 968.  Scores are graded from 200 to 1,000, with 800 the state achievement goal.

Both the boys and girls baseball and softball teams for Palos Verdes High won Bay League titles with wins Thursday. The boys baseball team defeated Mira Costa High and the girls softball team also defeated Mira Costa 11-0 to secure Bay League titles for both programs.  Palos Verdes Peninsula High finished tied for second for the boys team, and the Peninsula High softball team also placed second in league.

The Palos Verdes unified School District Board has voted to place a proposal for a new parcel tax of $165 per parcel on the ballot in June. This tax would be in addition to an existing school parcel tax of $$209 per parcel. The new tax is intended to raise approx. $3 million to offset some of the reductions in state funding expected of about $6 million.

Palos Verdes school students, prior to 1925, attended schools in Redondo Beach, which was then part of the Los Angeles City School District. A separate Palos Verdes school district was created in 1925, however it was only for grades K-8. The first school constructed, in 1926 in Malaga Cove, housed all school grades from elementary school through eighth grade,with high school students continuing to attend schools in Redondo Beach. During the construction of Malaga Cove School, students temporarily attended classes in the Gardiner Building in Malaga Cove Plaza.
