art: What a Doll! - 12/01/13 02:34 AM
Usually dolls do not grab my interest, in fact most of them wig me out with the glassy eyes. At least that was the case until I saw the dolls that Sharon Blaine of Greenville, SC creates. These dolls have personality! She brought the dolls to the Hard Candy Christmas Art and Craft Show at the Ramsey Center at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC this past weekend.
Sharon has an incredible knack with color and design. Every outfit, hairstyle and make-up was completely unique. She told me that she can't pass by a fabric store without stopping and … (4 comments)

art: New Musical Act Discovered in Greens Creek During Preview - 09/18/13 01:28 PM
While previewing a property in the Greens Creek area of Sylva today for a buyer, I heard the oddest music. Because we have a pretty healthy eco-system here near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, I've heard frog songs before...but never anything like this!   … (9 comments)

art: Things Are Never as Simple as Black & White... - 02/05/13 08:52 PM
Things are never as simple as black and white...there's always a little color in life.  Whenever we have a snowfall, one of my favorite views is directly out the picture window in the front of the house.  Come to think of it...this is one of my favorite views no matter what the weather is!        This stained glass piece is a creation by Bobby Pace with Riverwood Menagerie in Dillsboro, NC ... just one of the many reasons I love being here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ … (10 comments)

art: Easy Directions to Insert Clip Art...Inspired by Pat Kennedy - 11/25/12 05:39 AM
Pat Kennedy inspired this post by talking about the importance of adding clip art to your articles in her Primping Your Post article.  Our eyes are restless and are always looking for something to light on...indulge the eyes of your readers, keep them engaged.  I thought I'd build upon Pat's post and give a few tips on how to insert your clip art.   First, you want to write your post and we should all know how to do that.           I've been collecting clip art since I first started participating in ActiveRain and I add … (10 comments)

art: Stone Cold Frog - Speechless Sunday - 09/23/12 02:34 PM
Where did Sunday go? Contract, listings, signs, lockboxes, photos, laundry, groceries and here it is ... almost 12:30.  Maybe that 10pm coffee wasn't such a great idea. Oh well, too late now.   When I showed property a couple of months ago out Cullowhee Mountain Road with another agent...also on a Sunday, come to think of it...I spotted this bit of yard art and have to say, I'm a big admirer of whimsy.      Some people are so clever, a few rocks of different sizes and what do you get?  A Stone Cold Frog!  Gotta love it.     … (13 comments)

art: Saving the Cat? - Wordless Wednesday - 05/22/12 09:48 PM
The cat is probably wondering “Did I ASK to be saved?”. There are so many possible outcomes for this scene, none of them however what these kids thought would be the end result.

How many days have YOU started out thinking there would be a purring and content kitty in your hands only to find yourself reeling, hurt and confused by someone else’s misinterpretation of your well intentioned actions?

These kids had better hope their parents aren’t watching!

This is one of the phenomenal bronze statues surrounding the Shakespeare Theater in Montgomery, Alabama.

art: Shadow Art ~ Friday Fotos - 03/15/12 10:07 PM

Wouldn’t you think that if you had lived in the same place since 1989 you would be pretty familiar with just about anything concerning that location? I like good surprises and that’s what I got when I looked at one of the walls in the dining room Wednesday morning.

Never, in all the time I’ve lived here have I seen the sunlight grace us with artwork like this, a little bit of Shadow Art. Now, the trick will be to remember to watch for it in mid March and see how often it reappears.

art: Riverwood Blooms in Dillsboro, NC - 03/14/12 01:35 PM

Whenever anyone visits Dillsboro, NC they should be certain to walk up the hill from Front Street and visit the shops of Riverwood. This collection of Artisan Galleries was the brainchild of two sisters, Susan Morgan Leveille and Ruth Morgan McConnell. Through all of the years it has been one of the focal points of the historic Town of Dillsboro, Susan and Ruth remained true to their vision of this collection of shops being an enclave for working artisans.
Oaks Gallery maintains an inventory of the works from some of the premiere craftspeople in Western North Carolina, many of whom … (5 comments)

art: Yosemite HD Video - Prepare to Have Your Jaw Drop - 02/15/12 02:42 PM

Our friend in Sylva Vista emailed the video of Yosemite below to us a couple of weeks ago. It is a glorious testament to what can happen when two creative people reach out to combine their talents with the shared purpose of introducing something beautiful in our country to the rest of the world.  Believe it or not, this collaboration reminds me of a lot of the posts on ActiveRain.
This video of time lapse photography is the product of Colin Delehanty and Sheldon Neill. I wrote to Colin to ask permission to embed the video and he kindly wrote … (7 comments)

art: Shocked, Freaked and Dismayed~The Ants Invaded Picnik.com? - 01/21/12 12:38 AM

Shocked, freaked and dismayed. Yep, no more picnik.com after April 19, 2012. I tried going to Flickr but big upside down smiley face on that. Navigating around that site felt like my shoes were on the wrong feet. I opened up Publisher on the computer and while it’s great for flyers and note cards, it doesn’t serve the purpose at all for photo editing.
There was no explanation about WHY picnik is going away, just that it is going away. Some sort of cutesy banner about the “ants have invaded”, what the hell does that mean? Another cutesy banner about … (12 comments)

art: Music on Mondays ~ I Feel Anything But Blue...Just Listen to This - 01/15/12 11:20 PM

I feel anything but blue, but oh man…listen to this.
Sometimes, it’s no wonder that television is losing out to things like YouTube. Sure, with television you can change from channel to channel, but it isn’t organic and there aren’t as many choices as your imagination can handle.
Just like in real estate when a buyer can adjust their wants in a home as we meander through the choices, listening to music on YouTube leads you down paths you never expected.
This morning I started in Hawaii, listening to Israel from there I heard Yes, then Pink Floyd and thought … (8 comments)

Today we have liquid sunshine all day but thank goodness the weather forecast for Saturday looks like perfect mountain autumn weather and there's stuff to do. The next few days is certainly one of the best times to be in the mountains of Western North Carolina and enjoy the array of outdoor activities in our neck of the woods. There’s something for everyone.

art: Grab a Chair, Gripping Graphics in Greens Creek - 09/18/11 04:01 AM

That's right - you heard read me! Grab a chair, gaze upon these gripping great graphics in Greens Creek.  This isn't a free ride though, we're seeking some phenomenal marketing advice.   A few weeks ago, I posted an article about this incredible large cabin in Greens Creek on the more than two acre "campsite perfect" lot located between Dillsboro and Franklin in the mountains of Western North Carolina.  Then, because we are so crazy about the artistic versatility and mastery of seller Paulette Taiclet and the craftsman quality of her husband Larry's carpentry skills, I posted an article about the art.  Since … (10 comments)

art: Diamonds and Rust - The Simplest of Gifts on a Wordless Wednesday - 09/14/11 12:36 AM

It's been hanging on the deck ever since Monica gave it to us one Christmas about a dozen years ago.  When dew or rain touches it, we have Diamonds and Rust.  The simplest of gifts can provide the greatest of pleasures.  I must have 100 photos of this piece of rusting metal.   Today, I share two of them and hope you'll also find yourself humming Joan Baez's song throughout the day.  You remember "Diamonds and Rust, I've had enough...but I feel so much better dressed in love". … (16 comments)
