Some folks didn't need an Easter Bonnet to be a standout in the Easter Parade in Dillsboro yesterday. A group of antique car owners always lead off the procession in their classy vintage rides. Our friend, Marion Jones had his companion "Major" as his co-pilot in his beautiful 1977 green Ford pick up truck. This truck looked like it could be in a magazine ad for 1977 Ford pick up trucks. This tree was in full bloom about this time last year. I saw it while on a walk with the Office Manager down near the boat put in where Scotts Creek flows into the Tuckasegee River in Dillsboro, NC. This year, just tonight we have Winter Warnings running on the television screen. A particularly large family traveled together today to visit Dillsboro. After stopping off at Bradley's General Store for ice cream cones, the family did some shopping at Treehouse Pottery, Dogwood Crafters and The Golden Carp. Before heading out to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for a little hiking, they took a little breather on the deck of Cannon's Corner just outside our office. Things are never as simple as black and white...there's always a little color in life. Whenever we have a snowfall, one of my favorite views is directly out the picture window in the front of the house. Come to think of it...this is one of my favorite views no matter what the weather is! Ducks must be really hardy birds. The outside temperature today as I drove alongside the Tuckasegee River was about 31 degrees. I don't even want to think was the water temperature was. Tunnel Mountain Road runs beside the river and just before heading up the mountain towards the farmhouse, there is a little campground. I glanced toward the river and noticed this little group of Mallards paddling around in the water. The wind was fierce enough that the water was swirling about the birds. You might recall this idyllic scene from a post earlier this year. This is a portion of Scotts Creek that usually flows gently through the middle of Dillsboro. Nice, huh? Due to the heavy and extensive rains over the last several days...plus we are predicted to get another 2.67" tonight...Scotts Creek turned into a raging river. Note how close to the top of the bank the river creek is flowing. Usually, there is a good 8-10 feet from river creek to the top of the bank. It certainly feels like we've gotten the biblical amount of 40 days and 40 nights worth of rain. If I knew what a cubit was, we'd start drafting plans for an ark! It really hasn't been 40 days and nights but it has been 4 days or better of non-stop rain. Some of it, like what I'm looking at right now as I look over the yard has been extremely heavy. Even in winter, the farmhouse on Tunnel Mountain Rd just outside of Dillsboro, NC still boasts some vibrant color. This moss almost looks like the grass you might find in someone's aquarium. It looks like we'll be getting some springlike weather this week, by Thursday we might even see temperatures near 65 degrees. JoeFrank McKee from Tree House Pottery in Dillsboro couldn't have made me happier than he did by having his wood fired kiln going tonight, the last night of Dillsboro's Lights and Luminaires Festival. Not only was it toasty warm to stand by but the fiery vignettes were too good to pass up and made for some smokin' hot photo ops. Obviously they've lived at the Tuckasegee River Travel Trailer Park for a good long time. How I've missed them, I'll never know. I'll bet I go by this park at least once a week. Tree Dudes and Dudettes are always unique and among my favorite subjects. This was my first time ever to interview Trailer Park Tree People. Here it is ... Friday and I can't believe that Thanksgiving is next week. When we were in retail we always knew when the holidays were, not so much in real estate. I spent the afternoon getting new photos of a couple of our listings to refresh the presentations. When I was reviewing them this evening, I discovered I'd taken more fall flower fotos the other day while showing the farmhouse at 1004 Tunnel Mountain Road. The best reason to have visitors in our area is that it makes us become tourists in one of our nation's favorite playgrounds. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are two of the most visited outdoor attractions in the U.S. The other day, we took my mother and brother to Gatlinburg, TN which is only a little more than an hour and a half from Dillsboro, NC. The farmhouse just outside of Dillsboro, NC is getting so much interest that my car is on auto pilot when I go show it! It looks great too. That huge and marvelous magnolia out in the backyard is sporting some new seed pods. Every season that I'm out at the farmhouse property I'm seeing something different happening on that tree. Many of the buildings in the historic Town of Dillsboro, NC have flower boxes on the front. For generations, merchants have been planting pansies in the boxes to brighten the town up. Shirley's Boutique in Cannon's Corner...at the corner of Church Street and Front Street is no exception. Over the 30 or so years she's been there, Shirley has been planting pansies and every year like clockwork the little volunteers pop up at the base of her building. The farmhouse on Tunnel Mountain Road is getting a massive amount of attention over the last couple of months. Inquiries received via phone and email have resulted in a goodly number of showings, so I've been out there quite a bit recently. One of the best things about the farmhouse property is that no two months are the same. The plantings, blooms, leaves, bugs, everything is different each time I go out there. Watch where you're going is a common admonishment given by parents to children to keep them from absentmindedly stepping off a curb into traffic or bashing into a display of crystal. It's rarely a positive suggestion to observe the beauty that surrounds us. It is very early in the fall season and already there are so many Things to Do in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Yesterday (Saturday) was a great time to be in the mountains of Western North Carolina. We went to two Fall Festivals. The first was in Dillsboro, NC and it was the first time the Colorfest was hosted in Dillsboro. There seemed to be about 40 vendors, local craftspeople and artisans...all demonstrating their crafts.
