great smoky mountains national park: A Heartbeat to the Smokies...112 Iris Lane, Whittier, NC - 06/12/17 04:55 AM
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of listing and selling a retreat center in a small community in Whittier, North Carolina.  Since then, the new owners have sold a portion and thoughtfully improved the remaining two buildings...a five bedroom farmhouse and a detached bonus building with endless possibilities for uses.  The real beauty of this listing at 112 Iris Lane is not only the small community it is located in but also the unparalleled proximity to everything wonderful in the mountains of Western North Carolina...literally, a heartbeat away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park!

Although the farmhouse could easily be used as … (7 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Oconoluftee Visitor's Center-Perfect Weather & a Good Friend...Photos - 03/03/13 02:37 PM
One of my favorite places in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is next to the Oconoluftee Visitor's Center just outside of Cherokee, NC.  This morning braving the temperatures in the mid 20s, a friend and I decided to take a little mini photography safari.  We spent most of our time walking along the River Trail and the split rail fence enclosing the farmstead.   The red fungus in this photo are about the size of the tip on a leaded pencil.                   It was a good time, perfect weather and a good … (9 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Reintroduction of the Elk - Oconoluftee Farm Museum and Homestead - 10/25/12 10:46 PM
The best reason to have visitors in our area is that it makes us become tourists in one of our nation's favorite playgrounds.  The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are two of the most visited outdoor attractions in the U.S.  The other day, we took my mother and brother to Gatlinburg, TN which is only a little more than an hour and a half from Dillsboro, NC.  I hoped before the day was over we'd get a chance to see elk in the park which were reintroduced to Western North Carolina back in 2001.   … (10 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Colored Leaf Season in the Mountains of North Carolina - 09/30/12 11:42 AM
It is almost that time again...colored leaf season in the mountains of North Carolina.  Everyday another small change occurs, a few more leaves blowing on the ground, grass growing is slowing down, dots of color among the woods in the higher elevations, temperatures are a touch cooler and nature just sounds a little crunchier here in the mountains of North Carolina.  It certainly seems like the peak weeks for great color viewing will be the second and third weeks of October.     If you are planning a visit, I just hope you've already booked your hotel!     … (24 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Where Do You Go? - 09/25/12 10:07 PM
When life keeps tossing challenges at you from left to right, from behind and in front threatening to make you stumble - do you have images you keep in your mind to help you navigate these obstacles? Where do you go? Some people visualize themselves at the shore smelling salt air, listening to the surf and watching the waves come in and go out.  Others imagine themselves to be rock climbing, boating, dancing, stargazing...we all have something that can bring us comfort and help sort out our thoughts so we can move on through the day and reconcile whatever issues that have materialized … (11 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Yosemite HD Video - Prepare to Have Your Jaw Drop - 02/15/12 02:42 PM

Our friend in Sylva Vista emailed the video of Yosemite below to us a couple of weeks ago. It is a glorious testament to what can happen when two creative people reach out to combine their talents with the shared purpose of introducing something beautiful in our country to the rest of the world.  Believe it or not, this collaboration reminds me of a lot of the posts on ActiveRain.
This video of time lapse photography is the product of Colin Delehanty and Sheldon Neill. I wrote to Colin to ask permission to embed the video and he kindly wrote … (7 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Looking Sheepish ~ Speechless Sunday (Almost) - 02/12/12 12:43 AM

Showing property or snowing property yesterday in Waynesville was a pleasant adventure in spite of the 25-30 mile wind gusts and the below freezing temperatures. If we had waited until today to look at houses, we would have been greeted by this morning’s temperature of 8 degrees with the wind chill taking us below zero.
Not only did we identify a few very good candidates for the buyers’ short list of homes but they brought their daughter, a professional photographer, with them. If the weather had been a tad more pleasant, I can see that we would have stopped far … (8 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: How Lucky Was This Day ~ Wordless Wednesday - 01/17/12 11:51 PM

How lucky was this day? Day three working with the nice couple from South Georgia and the forecast was 70 percent chance of rain. Not only did we dodge serious raindrops throughout the day but we also got to see several rainbows in different parts of Haywood County. I sort of felt like a tornado chaser pulling off the highway to get photos. It was worth it…all my life I’ve seen rainbows and never stopped to get photos.
Have I mentioned lately how much I love this area and my work?    Have a lucky day, but don’t forget to create … (16 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Druids and the Great Smoky Mountains - Smoky Mountain Country Club - 12/29/11 11:58 PM

When most people think of the Great Smoky Mountains, they really aren’t thinking much about golf courses. Just over the shoulder of this Druid lies the Smoky Mountain Country Club and Golf Course in the Conley’s Creek community of Whittier, NC.

SMCC features fine dining in the form of the Persimmon Grille, the golf course surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and amenities such as the work out gym, tennis courts and swimming pool.
The beauty of this location, whether you are a golfer or not, is the proximity to the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National … (6 comments)

great smoky mountains national park: Building a Barn - Working Together - Friday Fotos - 11/18/11 12:53 AM
There is something so special about being inside a barn built more than 100 years ago. Just knowing that a whole community put their backs and hands to raising the barn together makes you realize the best way to accomplish a goal is to work together.

My imagination goes wild when I think about everything that may have gone on inside the walls of this barn.  Then I think about the vast pasture outside this barn located in the Cataloochee Valley area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
