  Today will be full of shopping local...in spite of the rain. I'm headed out shortly to Bypass Power and Equipment in Waynesville to get repair parts for the John Deere Mower. Then I'll go to the Tractor and Supply in Waynesville (yes, they are nationwide but they do employ a lot of local people) for rear tires...I guess 20 years is all I can expect out of the current tires.     After I get the John Deere stuff out of the way, I get to go to the Historic Waynesville Farmers Market. localism: Was There Snow At Balsam? - 10/30/12 10:46 PM
  Living in Balsam, NC comes with a set of responsibilities...sort of.  When we have "winterish" weather here in Jackson County, NC it isn't unusual to get messages on my cell phone similar to "did you get snow at Balsam?".   Don't ask me why there would be a question of snow being "at" Balsam instead of "in" Balsam, you would never hear someone say "snow at Detroit" or "snow at Denver", but here things occur "at" Balsam, Caney Fork, Greens Creek or occasionally things happen "up Caney Fork" or "up Bradley Branch", etc.  The only thing I can think of is … (9 comments)

This Localism Contest has me thinking a lot about community. Posting everyday about our states, counties, cities, towns, businesses, neighborhoods and streets really reinforces my belief that community counts, and extends beyond our personal borders and isn't always physically local.
