mountains of western north carolina: He's No Angel...Just a Dude on the Driveway - 01/29/13 01:32 PM
There is nothing more pathetic than watching someone try to create a snow angel without snow.  It's just sad.  This stick dude appeared on the driveway, I guess maybe remembering the quantity of snow we had a couple of years ago.  Back then he was able to make a magnificent snow angel and I think he was just trying to hold onto his former glory.  Given the forecast for the high winds and lots of rain tomorrow here in the mountains of Western North Carolina, glory is the last thing the stick dude should worry about holding onto...he'll be lucky … (18 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: Balsam Sunsets Happen Quickly - 11/18/12 12:16 PM
What's it like on the western coast when it is time for sundown?  How long do they last?  Is it different than here in the mountains of Western North Carolina?  I love both sunrise and sunset...sunrise seems to last a bit longer although still too brief.  Sunset however dips below the mountain ranges and poof it's gone and night is upon us.     One of the twisted positives of daylight hours ending earlier this time of year is that we often get to see the sunset on the way home.  Late this afternoon I ran an errand into Sylva to … (10 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: Showcasing NC Talent - Things to Do in the Mountains of Western NC - 10/07/12 04:15 AM
It is very early in the fall season and already there are so many Things to Do in the mountains of Western North Carolina.   Yesterday (Saturday) was a great time to be in the mountains of Western North Carolina.  We went to two Fall Festivals.  The first was in Dillsboro, NC and it was the first time the Colorfest was hosted in Dillsboro.  There seemed to be about 40 vendors, local craftspeople and artisans...all demonstrating their crafts.  The vendors were tucked in all the nooks and crannies that the historic Town of Dillsboro has to offer.  Situating the artists … (16 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: Colored Leaf Season in the Mountains of North Carolina - 09/30/12 11:42 AM
It is almost that time again...colored leaf season in the mountains of North Carolina.  Everyday another small change occurs, a few more leaves blowing on the ground, grass growing is slowing down, dots of color among the woods in the higher elevations, temperatures are a touch cooler and nature just sounds a little crunchier here in the mountains of North Carolina.  It certainly seems like the peak weeks for great color viewing will be the second and third weeks of October.     If you are planning a visit, I just hope you've already booked your hotel!     … (24 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: Harvest Season in Western North Carolina - 09/27/12 09:51 AM
Our friend April who lives in Webster is an incredible gardener and always generous to share the bounty with us.  Leslie had washed the vegetables and laid them on a papertowel.  The colors were so striking that I put them in a glass dish...photo op, right?      Raising our own vegetables is a goal but until then we are grateful to our friend for sharing  ;-) … (9 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: Autumn Harbinger in the Mountains of Western North Carolina - 08/26/12 01:43 PM
It's easy enough to tell that autumn is coming to the mountains of Western North Carolina very soon. The shops all have their summer clothing on markdown and the evenings have been in the 50s.  During my walk I can tell that the underbrush is getting a little thinner and there are starting to be leaves on the ground and touches of yellow in the trees.  One of the truest harbingers of autumn though are the Buckeyes.  They started dropping in earnest about a week ago.       When we had our retail businesses, Leslie used to love to … (19 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: Hot, Hot, Hot, Except for... - 08/09/12 10:22 PM
At the end of July, I worked with a family looking at old farmhouses. The temperatures were hot, hot, hot! Except on the bridge over John Creek in the Caney Fork community of Cullowhee, NC. The shade from the ancient oak trees and the sound of water tumbling over the smooth rocks felt like the reason that the sudden cool breeze occurred.

For about fifteen minutes the weather was delicious and all thoughts of air conditioned controlled environments vanished…you’ve got to love these mountain areas...

mountains of western north carolina: Colorful Season in the Mountains of Western NC - Silent Saturday - 07/06/12 10:41 PM
When you live in a region with four distinct weather seasons, like the mountains of Western North Carolina, there is a dramatic difference in the "color" of the season.  As I was scrolling through the memory card on the Sony camera this morning I was reminded how happy I am to be in a place with this kind of year round variety.       Today I "plucked" a few photos to try out with the www.ribbet.com website's collage and framing features.  This was fun...especially using the eyedropper color sampler to play with the borders and frames.       … (8 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: East Fork Happy Shed - 07/05/12 09:55 PM
A few days ago while I was headed out East Fork to pick up some signs and a lockbox, I passed a familiar scene that I’d never stopped to photograph before…the Happy Shed of East Fork. Nope, springtime and temperatures in the 60s would have been too easy. Give me the high 90s, bees, ticks and snakes any old day! Of course, for those people considering a move to the mountains of Western North Carolina our “mountain breezes” actually make for a very cool high 90s and we are legendary for our friendly and well-mannered bees, ticks and snakes.

mountains of western north carolina: Eagle's Ridge...Remote, Private & Just Down the Road from Everything! - 06/30/12 11:11 PM
Just the name “Eagle’s Ridge” conjures up a feeling of a remote spot in the mountains so it is a pleasant surprise to find out you can get that feeling without being far away from “civilization”!
So many people come to the mountains of Western North Carolina looking for a little mountain getaway house and why not? We are home to the most visited national park in the country, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Who wouldn’t want to have their own retreat near all of the most popular outdoor attractions in the U.S.?
Our listing in the Eagle’s Ridge Development … (1 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: We're Having a Heat Wave in the Mountains of Western North Carolina - 06/30/12 12:47 PM
Thank goodness global warning is just a misguided scientific fairy tale because if it was really happening I can’t imagine what the temperature would have felt like. As it was, driving through Canton, NC today after showing a house and writing an offer, I glanced down at the thermometer to see it register 105 degrees. Incredible! Something is seriously off kilter when the mountains of Western North Carolina are hotter than Florida.

This photo was taken last year when I burned off the dead wood on the property and now I have a pile twice as large. I had … (15 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: Ooohing and Ahhhhing in Dillsboro, NC ~ Speechless Sunday - 06/23/12 11:53 PM
The mountains of Western North Carolina are home to orange day lillies all over the place.  This one which is on the deck outside our office in Cannon's Corner is unlike any lilly I've ever seen.  Much showier.  Folks strolling the streets of Dillsboro, NC always stop to ooh and ahh over this beautiful bloom.   … (10 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: The Fungus Among Us ~ Wordless Wednesday - 06/20/12 10:36 AM
These mushrooms were noticed at the base of the granddaddy Dude tree while I was mowing the grass last weekend.  Sometimes the fungus among us is harder to photograph than you might think, being on the ground and all.  There are times that I think it would pay off to be shorter.                                                 … (14 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: What is Luck? ~ Monday Melodies - 06/10/12 09:56 PM
Real estate’s like this. Sometimes you work weekends. If you’re lucky, the people are sincere in the mission of buying property. If you’re REALLY lucky, they’re sincere AND engaging. Bright, funny, with lots of give and take in the conversation.
It hasn’t happened often, but there’ve been few people I’ve been trapped in a car with gasping for additional oxygen to stimulate the brain. You know the folks, never fails that they’ve zero interest in ever purchasing real estate. One sure fire litmus test is that they NEVER utter a word of their own volition OR answer only in monosyllabic … (12 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: The Upside of Rainy Day Showings ~ Speechless Sunday - 06/10/12 07:23 AM
Showing houses during the rain usually isn't the first choice of Realtors or their clients, but we work with what we're dealt with.  The upside of the rainy days in the summer in the mountains of Western North Carolina would have to be the jewel-like raindrops as the rest on the very happy blooms!     Seeing beauties like this makes it all worth it...     … (10 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: The Flame That Doesn't Burn ~ Speechless Sunday - 05/27/12 12:35 PM
What kind of flame doesn’t burn? This time of year that would be the native Flame Azalea. In Western North Carolina, this azalea goes from bud to bloom in just a couple of days. We’re really lucky to have one on the property here in Balsam, NC.

The blooming usually heralds the arrival of fireflies too and sure enough, this evening the woods and the yard had those fairy sized lights dancing all over the place, thousands of them…they aren’t as easy to catch photographs of though!
;-D

mountains of western north carolina: Full Steam Ahead...It's Time to Get Back to Work - 05/26/12 10:13 PM
And just like that, I’m full steam ahead and ready to work! Yesterday was spent in the sun on my good buddy, John Deere the riding mower. Two weeks away from home meant some tall thick grass and other assorted varieties of green that passes for grass in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Today I started out with a great cup of coffee and read Emily Medvec’s post about being handed one of the first “short sales” in Santa Fe, NM back in 2008. Since there really was no “how to” manual, she just jumped in, got creative and …full … (12 comments)

mountains of western north carolina: This Bud's For You ~ Speechless Sunday - 05/05/12 10:22 PM
Last year I posted a number of Rhododendron photos, they are so plentiful here in the mountains of Western North Carolina during late April and May. I love them, they are showy and vibrant … not to mention some of my favorite colors. This year though, I noticed them before they burst into full bloom and was taken by the richness of the bud’s color.

I also had a little fun with editing in Daguerrotype...

mountains of western north carolina: "I Love This Frickin' View" - 03/16/12 01:08 PM

“I love this frickin’ view” he kept saying. Why not? The mountains of Western North Carolina is one of the most beautiful areas in the world and the frickin’ views from the cabins the buyers were looking at ARE amazing.
This has been a good day that actually started last weekend. The reason that we are working with these great buyers this weekend is because I answered my cell phone on a Saturday afternoon and was agreeable to putting together a list of cabins that these buyers could do drive bys until I could meet with them on the following morning.

mountains of western north carolina: Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty - 03/13/12 09:59 AM

We’ve been getting down to the nitty gritty of real estate lately. There have been some great posts on AR lately about simple organizational methods. Not a moment too soon! Like a lot of REALTORS lately we’ve been consumed with activity…offers, contracts, listings, new buyers, revamping marketing, more new buyers…
Oddly enough, even though this isn’t Monday when I usually post some sort of musical video - I woke up with a song I hadn’t heard in YEARS and now I can’t get it out of my head. I guess because it always reminded me of forward motion and not … (19 comments)
