shopping: Shopping Locally...Why Not? We Earned it Locally. - 04/26/13 11:06 PM
Today will be full of shopping local...in spite of the rain. I'm headed out shortly to Bypass Power and Equipment in Waynesville to get repair parts for the John Deere Mower. Then I'll go to the Tractor and Supply in Waynesville (yes, they are nationwide but they do employ a lot of local people) for rear tires...I guess 20 years is all I can expect out of the current tires.     After I get the John Deere stuff out of the way, I get to go to the Historic Waynesville Farmers Market. Time for good locally grown veggies and … (28 comments)

shopping: Patriotism and Shopping Small is a Big Thing - 11/24/12 12:45 PM
Are you a patriot? Did you shop small today?  We happily did.  The 26th Annual Hard Candy Christmas event was held in the Ramsey Center at Western Carolina University yesterday and today.  About 100 local craftspeople and artisans brought their wares to sell...and sell they did.  Just about everyone I saw returning to their vehicle was carrying a purchase of locally produced merchandise and they were all wearing smiles.  It feels great to spend money and watch it go directly to someone in your community.  Sustainability and patriotism at its best.         Today, the small towns of Sylva, Dillsboro and … (11 comments)

shopping: Riverwood Blooms in Dillsboro, NC - 03/14/12 01:35 PM

Whenever anyone visits Dillsboro, NC they should be certain to walk up the hill from Front Street and visit the shops of Riverwood. This collection of Artisan Galleries was the brainchild of two sisters, Susan Morgan Leveille and Ruth Morgan McConnell. Through all of the years it has been one of the focal points of the historic Town of Dillsboro, Susan and Ruth remained true to their vision of this collection of shops being an enclave for working artisans.
Oaks Gallery maintains an inventory of the works from some of the premiere craftspeople in Western North Carolina, many of whom … (5 comments)

shopping: Flowing Beethoven Hair - 03/11/12 01:59 PM

The historic Town of Dillsboro really is a “walkabout” district. Even though it is only about 3 blocks large, it still is home to more than 40 specialty shops and restaurants. Up on the hill lies the Riverwood Shops and The Well House restaurant. Among the shops in Riverwood is the beautiful Oaks Gallery and Riverwood Pottery.

Oaks Gallery hosts the works of scores of local artisans and is surrounded by a good number of flower gardens. Just outside of Oaks Gallery is a gazebo with a flowering vine of some sort growing on it. This was the first … (20 comments)

shopping: Reflecting on Small Business Saturday...and the Hound Dog! - 11/25/11 07:43 AM

Have you been giving Small Business Saturday any thoughts? This holiday has given me time to reflect on small business owners and their future. I’ve also wondered how we, as a nation of consumers can help out the true “SMALL BUSINESSES” survive and thrive.
We ignored the Black Friday that was oozing into the actual Thanksgiving Day and chose to eat a modest meal of salmon with marmalade/ginger/Dijon mustard sauce, sweet potatoes and asparagus plus of course, the pumpkin pie. Eating simply allowed us plenty of time to enjoy the weather and the dogs…they really liked that.
Especially Gigi, (She … (3 comments)

shopping: Duck into Dillsboro, NC - 08/21/11 08:28 AM

Dillsboro is on the way to many well known stops in the mountains of Western North Carolina, such as Sylva, Bryson City, Cherokee, Waynesville, Asheville and of course, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Folks traveling from Florida or Georgia will more than likely be on 441 heading north towards those destinations, when they get to the intersection of 107 and 441 its an easy matter to "Duck into Dillsboro".

One of my favorite things about Dillsboro is that it is at the intersection of two good bodies of moving water...Scotts Creek and the Tuckasegee River.  Not only … (12 comments)
