This past weekend the 17th annual Maine State Soap Box Derby Race was held in Houlton Maine. Rain was not a factor, winners in the stock and super stock divisions were created to represent the state of Maine in Akron Ohio's World Series of downhill kit car gravity racing.

The Houlton Maine area lost a good soul this week in Billy Weber. Despite being a hat wearing, card caring New York Yankees fan in the heart of Red Sox Baseball Nation, Billy had a heart of gold.
Especially if the local Maine event you needed help with involved kids, youth sports.
Since 1996, the first year of the Northern Maine Soap Box Derby program, Bill was one of the anchors of the highly important "Zoo Crew".

The Houlton Maine Rotary Club has always been a civic service club that made the quality of life in the Southern Aroostook County so much brighter.
Usually the long list of financial contributions have been to youth oriented causes.
From new lighting, sound equipment at local school systems, to building a Houlton Maine outdoor musical amphitheatre, the new local little league base ball field complex.
Past year donations to Houlton Maine Regional Hospital's blood gas analyzers, mammography units and capital improvement campaigns have benefited all in Northern Maine.

The weather in Houlton Maine could not have been any more picture perfect for the 15th annual Northern ME Soap Box Derby Race.
Downhill kit car gravity racers in two divisions, stock and super stock enjoyed plenty of sunshine, a slight breeze.
As heat by heat, down thru the race brackets a final set of local youth were selected to head west to Ohio.

The derby car, the kid race up to speeds of 30 miles per hour with just the Maine wind, the occassional squirrel crossing the Derby Hill soap box derby lanes in Houlton ME. Can you picture yourself that kid and slightly terrified on the top of the hill but jumping up and down and ready to swap wheels, lanes and race again in your soap box derby heat?
