home improvements: Cheap Home Improvements - 09/20/09 07:37 AM

One of the many houses that we have lived in and remodeled over the years needed more cabinet space. We decided to move the refrigerator and added additional lower cabinets. We were able to match the cabinet doors on the bottom cabinets by using the doors from the laundry room that just happened to match and were the right size. Since we moved the refrigerator the upper cabinets were too short. We went to Lowe's and looked at the cabinet displays and there was the answer. We bought a piece of shelving board and some dowels, went home and made … (2 comments)

home improvements: Just A Little Caulking and a Little Time Can Save Your Money - 09/20/09 07:18 AM

Now is a great time to check all of your windows to make sure that the caulking is in good shape. It is amazing how much cool air you can lose around your windows. A lot of people are not aware that caulking is not a permanent product. It should be checked at least every two years. It will break down due to the weather. Also check the flashing around your chimney. Another good thing to check is the weather stripping around your doors. Air Conditioning is too expensive to let it slip out the door or window.   … (4 comments)

home improvements: You Deserve Good Service - 04/14/09 06:15 AM

How many times have you had a repair person to come to your home to make a repair? Did the person show up when expected? Did they conduct themselves in a professional manner? Did they make a mess and not clean it up? Did they charge what you were told up front? Were the charges higher than you expected? Was the repair complete when they left? Was the problem fixed? How many times have you paid for repairs that were not fixed or you were not pleased with the work performed? Always get references from any one that you allow … (2 comments)

home improvements: Spring is a Good Time for Home Maintence - 04/13/09 03:11 PM
With the weather getting warmer, now is a good time to start checking you home for deferred maintenance issues. If it is warm enough in your area then it is time to make sure that your foundation vents are open. By opening your vents you will ensure good airflow in your crawl space. You should also check the caulking around your windows. Caulking is not a permanent product and will break down over time. If your caulking is cracked then it needs to be removed and re-caulked. If you are not handy with home reapirs then you need to call a … (0 comments)

home improvements: Putting the Pieces Together - 04/13/09 01:34 PM

Have you ever bought something that you had to assemble to find that the pieces don't fit together? This is one of the most frustrating things that happens in our business. It is especially frustrating when the product is a special order product. Most of the time, we just package the product up and take it back to the store it was purchased from and get another one. Has this ever happened to you? … (0 comments)

home improvements: The Price of a Few Rocks - 04/13/09 12:50 PM
In an earlier blog, we discussed building a simple firepit from creekrocks.
I failed to mention the fact that it cost us nothing to build, since we did not have to buy any materials. Infact, not only did it not cost us nothing - but it helped to clear the yard of some of the big rocks that were in our way of mowing the yard.  This just goes to show you don't have to spend alot of money to have a great idea or build something of value and enjoyment. … (0 comments)

home improvements: Just a Few Rocks - 04/13/09 12:41 PM
Here is a story from our mountain house. Our house is in Western North Carolina, it is located between Bryson City and Fontana Village. We had to have the septic system replaced and many rocks were dug up out of the yard. Alot of the rocks were large. We needed to do something with them. Our mountain family loves to sit around a fire on cool fall nights and roast hot dogs and marshmallows - so I took some of the rocks, laid them in a circle and made a simple firepit.  It only took about twenty minutes to construct and it … (0 comments)

home improvements: March Wind Take Your Shingles? - 03/26/09 09:40 AM
Have the March winds taken some of the shingles from your roof?
The month of March has always been known for being windy. These strong winds can wreak havoc on the shingles on your roof. It can send your shingles flying into your neighbor's yard.
Now is a good time to have a certified roofer to check your roof and evaluate whether or not you have any wind damage. Many roofers will not charge to give you an estimate, although some do charge to write you an estimate. You may also want check with your home owners insurance to see … (4 comments)

home improvements: A Flip of a Single Switch! - 02/15/09 02:21 AM
Guys, can you imagine how wonderful your wife would think that you are if she could just flip one switch and all of the outside holiday light would come on. I did this at our old house. My wife had nothing to say - totally speechless - and that is amazing for her. Right now is a good time to think about what you are going to do next year and take care of all of those little wiring issues before the warm weather gets here and we forget all about it.

home improvements: Cold Weather - 02/04/09 11:22 AM
The cold weather season is here. Now is the time to make sure that your home is winterized. Make sure that you have all of your vents closed - if you live in a house with a crawl space. Also, check your windows to see if your caulking is still in good shape.  If not, go & get some caulking and caulk your windows. Also, check the weather stripping around your doors. Also, it's a good idea to call and have your heating and cooling system checked and serviced - if necessary. Stay Warm.

home improvements: How Do You Know It's Really Fixed? - 12/11/08 11:03 AM
When you call a contractor or other trade professional to your home to repair something, how do you know if the repair is really fixed?
First of all, if it is really fixed, then the problem should have gone away. The symptoms should disappear. If you continue to have the same problem then it is not fixed and you will have to call the contractor to return to your home to work on your problem again. Sometimes the contractor shows up and really does repair your problem and unfortunately sometimes you are unable to get in touch with the contractor.
First … (0 comments)

This is also an excellent time to have your lawn mower serviced.

home improvements: Getting Ready for Winter - 12/09/08 11:19 AM
Now is a good time to get your yard ready for their long winter's nap. Now is the time to cut back all of your perennial plants and to get all of those bushes trimmed and lighted. This is also a good time to wash your windows and check the caulking to stop heat loss. Every thing that you do now will really pay off next spring.

home improvements: Hanging The Greens - 12/09/08 11:11 AM
We just finished hanging our wreaths and window dressings on our windows. We do this every year then set the spot lights. We cannot get over how much mess that the wreaths and the garlands make. It is like the artificial wreaths and garlands are messier than using fresh greens. We really enjoy having our house look good for the holidays.

home improvements: A Christmas Sleigh - 12/09/08 11:06 AM
A few years ago I made us a Christmas sleigh out of wood. It is really cool because it comes apart and you can store it flat. It is made out of 3/4" plywood then painted black and sealed with a clear coat. We use it every year beside our Christmas tree in our family room. We fill it with Christmas presents and set a wooden reindeer in front of it. We have really enjoyed it for several years now.
