mhafb: MHAFB Prepares for USAF's 60th Anniversary - Mountain Home AFB - 09/13/07 12:01 PM
Hot on the heels of another successful Air Force Appreciation Day, Mountain Home Air Force Base will host a birthday bash honoring (oddly enough) the United States Air Force.
MHAFB will be open its gates to the public at noon on Saturday, September 14th and a F15 flyby at 1:30 will officially open the festivities.  Members of the A10 West Coast Demonstration Team will be joined by a P51 Mustang, F86 Sabrejet and C130 Hercules for a heritage flight at 3:30 PM.
Other activities will include Security Police working dog demonstrations, munitions loads and the base fire department's "wall of water" display.  In addition, each squadron will host a unit display to familiarize the public with the unit mission.
Although not … (0 comments)

mhafb: Air Force Appreciation Day 2007 is Another Huge Success - Community - Mountain Home, ID - 09/13/07 09:53 AM
Mountain Home's 47th annual Air Force Appreciation Day may go into the books as the biggest of all.  Festivities included a 2 hour parade, an A10 flyby provided by the Idaho Air National Guard and a free barbecue which fed over 5,000.  Downtown streets were lined by an estimated 10,000 spectators, most of whom then filled Carl Miller Park to visit the dozens of booths sponsored by local and MHAFB organizations.
Music was provided by the 25th Army Band, a variety of country/rock groups and, my favorite, - the SleekIt Beasties - a Scottish drum and bagpipe band.
This very public demonstration of the close bonds between the community and … (0 comments)

mhafb: MHAFB Wins 2007 Award for Best Installation - Mountain Home AFB - 04/06/07 06:43 PM
Mountain Home Air Force Base has won the 2007 Commander-In-Chief's Installation Excellence Award.  MHAFB was selected as this year's best Air Force Installation from among 85 Air Force facilities located world-wide.
Making the award even more significant is that fact that the mission at MHAFB is currently in transition with all F16 and F15C aircraft leaving the base and being replaced by F15E Strike Eagles from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska.
366th Fighter Wing Commander Colonel Tony Rock urged MHAFB personnel to maintain the high standards that won the award by saying "If you focus on the mission and combat capability and take care of your folks the accolades and rewards will follow........As actor John Wayne once said, 'it ain't … (0 comments)

mhafb: The End of an Era at MHAFB - Mountain Home Air AFB - 03/30/07 11:33 AM
A large crowd of well wishers saw the last of The 389th Fighter Squadron's F16s depart MHAFB on March 29th as part of the base's realignment to a core F15E Strike Eagle installation.  The transition is nearly complete with the first F15E's from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska arriving in December of last year and the last scheduled for this May.
The 389th Fighter Squadron "Thunderbolts" have proven outstanding in many respects but one stands out in my mind.  Over nearly 16 years of operation, the squadron's F16s flew more than 57,787 sorties without a single, major accident - an incredible performance by air crews and maintenance personnel alike.
I allow myself a poignant moment or two when units … (0 comments)
